KE BRITI ll EAST AFRIC Aran. zo-23 Mombasa, the capitol of the coast province, is located 150 miles north of Zanzibar. As a seaport, Mombasa serves not only Kenya but also Uganda and northern Tanganyika, to both of which it is connected by rail. It handles over 7 million tons of shipping a year. The main exports are coffee, cotton, tea, sisal, tin, soda, hides and skins, and ivory. The city's leading industries include coffee curing, marine and general engineering, a lime Works, cement, glass, and soap factories, and a modern brevvery. The European section of Mombasa centers about the Kilindini and Fort Jesus roads, Which cross the city. The congested Old Town, in the eastern part of the city, is Arab. There are various mosques and temples and a Roman Catholic and an Anglican cathedral. The Insitute of Muslim Education is located here, and there is a European hospital as Well as clinics for the Asians, Africans, and Arabs. The population is 127,000, including 64,000 Africans , 38,000 Indians , 20,000 Arabs, and 3,000 Europeans.
