DIEGO SUAREZ APRIL 14-17 THE COUNTRY MADAGASCAR, also called the Malagasy Republic, located near the Southeastern .tip of Africa, is separated from the mainland by the Mozambique Channel, Which is 240 m1l6S Wide at its narrowest point. The island, the 4th largest in the World, is 930 miles long and 360 miles across at its broadest point, covering approximately 230,000 square miles, or an area roughly the size of Texas. ECONCMY AND INDUSTRY The economy of the island is based almost entirely on subsistence agriculture. Rice, the staple food of the Malagasy, is produced in all parts of the island, cassava, 21 f00'f from which tapioca is made, is the other main food crop. The principle commercial crops are coffee, rice and vanilla, with smaller quantities of cloves, sugar and tobacc0 being grown. Although coffee is the main cash crop, it is interesting to note that Madagascar produces two-thirds of the Worlds Vanilla. THE PEOPLE The total population of Madagascar in 1960 Was approximately 5,200,000. This figure ' l d b IUC H GS H Out 90,000 EUTOPWUS f02,000 of which are Frenchj 13,000 Indians and 8,000 Chinese. The population of Diego-Suarez is about 32,000 of Which some 7,000 are European.
