March 12, 1964 saw the HASSAYAMPA deploy to the WESTERN PACIFIC area enroute to Yokosuka, Japan as the first port of call. About three days out of Yokosuka We received a message which was to change the Whole schedule of our cruise. We learned that We Were to be a part of an opera- tion to be called the CONCORD SQUADRON. On March 20 We changed course for Subic Bay in the Philippine Islands Where We topped off our tanks and took on additional supplies for an extended period at sea. We soon learned that We would be visiting ports Where a U. S. Navy vessel was a rare guest. The main mission of the CONCORD SQUADRON Was good will via the People-to-People Program but We also demonstrated to the World that the U. S. Navy is capable of supporting a fleet in an area Where We have no bases ashore. The units Which made up the CONCORD SQUADRON, or TASK FORCE NINETY, were I fclookvvise starting at 12001 the USS SHELTON QDD-79Oj, USS FRANK KNOX CDDR-7425, USS BLUE CDD-7405, USS BON HOMME RICHARD QCVA-315 fFlagshipj, and USS HAS- SAYAMPA QAO-1455. April 4, 1964 We transitted the Mallaca Straits and entered the INDIAN OCEAN to begin our history-making voyage. QOff1cial U. S. Navy photographj T I
