Oilers of the U. S. Navy are named after rivers . Hassayampa, the river for which this ship is named, is an intermittent stream channel having its rise in North Central Arizona, near Prescott, site of the original capitol of Arizona Territory, and running south to the Gila River. It has been the scene of in- numerable events contributing to the history of Arizona. The arrowhead design is symbolic of Indian people - Hassayampa being an Indian name. The blue water with waves upside down represents the most accepted meaning of the name - the river that flows upside down. The yel- low sun and its orange rays represent the source of power - the fuel carried by the ship. The semi-arid state of Arizona, in which the Hassayampa river flows , is represented by the sand color, and emphasized by the predominately southwest rays of the sun.
