However, Mother Nature acted mean So we decided not to stay. And speaking of sea pay, If I might interject. Those typhoons are nasty, We earned it, by heck. Not much happened for a while Leavin the bi waves to churn That differed from the daily grind. Except that we were sent one day Merchants outstretched their hands, A waterborne parachute to find. Bidding us help the economy along. Nothing was sighted, so We returned to Buckner Bay. Though a large white tablecloth we found I n the same spot, another day. Went swiftly out the door. Thanksgiving Day we left, Well dressed but poor. Steering northerly, via Taiwan, M id-N ovember we joined with others, I . December found us in Nippon Land. Ships both big and small. The carriers Hancock and Kearsarge, Ten destroyers, cruisers Toledo and St. Paul. Q 8 8 , Our division departed for Hong Kong. ME Xu: Once more a fast carrier force, . An atomic evasion plan, And a blue Christmas at sea for the Powell, Not a white one on land. A typhoon threatened To take our New Year's away. Those aboard cursed the sea, Those at Baguio shouted hooray! Checking accounts and savings resolutions Repaired and ready To depart Subic Bay. The clocks read past midnight When we got underway. Toward the land known as CON US. To the wife, the kids, the Sweethearts many. Some time in -drydock, our rudder fixed, We've worked, played, bought gifts and cheer. Said goodbye to our loved ones, Steamed out of the bay. We'd be gone about five months, Give or take a day. The weather wouldn't be bad, Was the old salts' tale. But for some of the green lads, Well ii, where's that pail. Less than a week later We pulled up in Pearl. To spend Labor Day weekend With hip swinging hula girls. 24 The girls weren't so plentiful Like the posters insist, But the Exec picked up members For his liberty risk list. Our task was assigned On the Midway we'd keep tab. Steaming fast behind her, The downed pilots to grab. A short stop in Guam To take on some gas. The captain gave us permission To have swim call, en masse. Our boilers a'bulging Made steam with a sigh. And the carrier still in front, We split waves toward P.I. 22 September in Subic Bay - Four days of rest and repair. Then to sea with the submarine Aspro To practice anti-sub warfare. H.P.'s compass pointing North, We joined the Midway again. A fuel stop in Okinawa, Then on to Japan. The Land of the Rising Sun Bid us welcome and cheer. Off went the bargain seekers To hunt souvenirs and cheer. After two weeks we left, Engine trouble forced our return But it didn't take long to fix, For our sea pay we must earn. 0 o ip Niiehk
