Bennett, SMSN Signalmen as part of the Qperations Department team handle the ship's ex- ternal communications by transmitting and receiving messages employing flash- ing light semaphore, flaghoists and other visual means. Frequently Whole forma- tions of ships are maneuvered tactically by visual signals alone. Signalmen, the Skivvy Wavers, operate from the bridge and occupy a unique position of trust and responsibility in the reliable and rapid control of administrative and tactical com- munications. Radiomen transmit, receive, log, route, file and maintain security of messages. They operate teletypewriter equipment, tune radio transmitters and receiversg op- erate and perform operational and pre- ventative maintenance on and locate the more common failures of radio equip- ment. Yeomen perform administrative duties involving typing, filing, operation of office duplicating machines, preparing and routing of correspondence and re- ports, maintaining official records and publications in the ship's various offices. Quartermasters assist the OOD and navi- gator, serve as steersmen and perform ship control and navigation duties. They procure and correct hydrographical charts and publications for the ship's naviga- tional library. They maintain navigational instruments and keep correct naviga- tional time aboard ship.
