E lilluiitn- Wf ' «. Jpff :j. Wkj k M fl Presenting featuring The Look of Tomorrow Haslett High School Haslett, Michigan FOREWORD Dixit is the Latin word for (he) re¬ lated. We have tried to relate to you through the pictures in this Dixit your high school memories. In this book we have included your friends, classmates, and teachers. We hope that you will find pleasure in re¬ viewing the memories of the past school year. The 1960 Dixit is yours. You made it; we simply preserved it for you. We hope you will find it a worthy souvenir of 1959-1960 school year at Haslett High School. The Staff Because of his patience and understanding, we the Senior Class of 1960, do dedicate this book in honest admiration and with sincere appreciation to Mr. J. Leon Winslow. THE MANY TALENTS OF MRS. SMITH AND MR. WINSLOW We, the Seniors of 1960, would li ke to acknowledge Mrs. Bernice Smith for her outstanding service as a teacher, play director, and Dixit staff advisor. It was through her efforts that our education, our plays, and (we hope) our yearbook attained success. For these reasons we acknowledge Mrs. Smith. MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD The Haslett Board of Education congratulates the 1960 graduating class of Haslett High School. You are a select group because of your own efforts and the opportunities provided for you through the efforts of the citizens of this community and the other citizens of the State of Michigan. Whether you relish the idea or not, you are now full-fledged adult citizens. As such, you must begin to assume your share of responsibilities in an adult world. Whether you go to college or go to work in some other field of endeavor, you are better prepared to meet life than if you had failed to graduate from high school. It is our hope that you will do well in whatever you choose to do. We also hope that we shall al¬ ways be able to claim you as a graduate of Haslett High School with pride in our hearts. Our best wishes go with you wherever you go and you are always welcome when you return. THE HASLETT BOARD OF EDUCATION To the Class of I960; The Class of 1960 is the largest class ever to be graduated from Haslett High School. This is of importance to each of you because it signifies growth in the community, in the State, and in the Nation. Competition will be keener for jobs, for education, and for other de¬ sirable things in life. Through the National Defense Education Act, some of you can get as¬ sistance to continue your education. Others of you have, or will be able to get, scholarships to help you. Each of you now, in you own way, must seek for yourself, the things you deem to be good and desirable. Your high school education is the first achievement of any consequence along your road of success. It is my hope that you will always remember Haslett High School as the place where you learned to study, learned to concentrate, learned the value of knowledge, and learned respect for yourself and for others. Come and visit whenever you can; be loyal alumni or alumnae of Has¬ lett High. Congratulations, H. M. Murphy Superintendent z To the Class of I960: Congratulations on achieving graduate status from Haslett High School. As you reflect back on your many school experiences, it is my sincere hope that you have performed your tasks to the best of your ability and that these experiences will serve you well as you pursue your choice of voca¬ tion or educational endeavor. The world looks for young people to take a place in the scheme of things. In this scientific age you are expected to lead intelligently or to follow intelligently. Each of us has a place to fill. How well we fill it is dependent on how well we have performed our duties. Education never stops. You will be confronted with learning opportuni¬ ties all your life. How well you learn in the future is surely dependent on how well you have applied yourself in the past. Initiative and ambition are two necessary ingredients for success. I believe that each of you possesses these two qualities. I would like to hear from you often. Let me know about the progress you are making. Be sure to visit us whenever possible. Sincerely, F. J. The parade route was changed, the Seniors chose three princesses (instead of the usual two), and the Homecoming Dance was held on a Saturday night rather than after the Friday night game. The high point of Homecoming festivities was reached when Princess Di¬ anne Brooks became Queen Dianne. Other members of the court were: Seniors - Frances Rundel and Norma Brockman; Junior - Mary Kingsley; Sophomore - Ruth Ann Bothe; Freshman - Penny Fenska. The Vikings of Haslett enjoyed an outstanding season in 1959 as they swept through the league undefeated. Five of the six league teams never crossed the Vikings’ goal line due to the fine defensive efforts of: J. Carpenter, W. Newman, L. Davis, J. Sherman, J. Chambers, L. Morr, and D. Hynes. Morr and Davis were selected as honorable mentions with the other five boys making the All-League first team. The team represented Haslett in a fine way. The team, led by coaches Dennis Stoltz and Vernon Linton, wish the team of next year the best of luck and hope they will keep the Vikings of Haslett on top. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL THE VARSITY Haslett’s Varsity Basketball team added another trophy to the trophy case by winning the Ingham County League title. Haslett completed the first round of league play without sus¬ taining a loss. Later in the second round Haslett lost to Dansville and Leslie. During both of these defeats the varsity wasn ' t playing the brand of ball it had in the first round of competition. Each time Haslett ventured out of the league it was beaten. The first game of the season was lost to Mason, a Capitol Circuit team. Later the varsity lost to Holt also in the Capitol B Circuit. This game was very close with Haslett staying with Holt for three quarters. Holt pulled away in the fourth and won the game. Both Mason and Holt finished high in their circuit. After winning the County title Haslett drew St. Mary ' s in the districts. The game was lost as Haslett couldn’t find the range. Haslett placed two of its team on the all-league selection: Larry Hamilton and Warren Kent. Tom Hicks was named as an honorable mention. At the end of a near perfect season Haslett was crowned State C Track Champs. Winning 4 major meets, The Central Michigan Relays, The State Regionals, The Ingham County Meet, and finally the State Finals, Haslett found that it had collected 7 fine trophies. The only defeat came at the hands of East Lansing, a class A school. In addition to the four major wins, the Viking thin clads won numerous dual meets held earlier in the season. Haslett ' s main power came from its good depth and keen compe¬ tition. The boys on the team were truly an asset to the school. They had to participate in bad weather on many occasions and often had to come from behind to obtain their victories. The team has truly set a mark for teams of the future. The Vikings, however, defeated the league leading Aggies in the last game of the season by a score of 4 to 2. Haslett again carried much weight in the all-league selection by placing three of its team on the honor squad. Warren Kent, Captain Larry Davis, and Dan Hynes were the ones selected. The seniors of this year ' s team wish next year’s team the best of luck. Coach Dennis Stoltz hopes to win the title next year. ALL-LEAGUE SELECTION Varsity Cheerleaders, left to right, are: Donna George, Lorraine McCumby, Elaine Bothe, Sally Dusseau, Carol Neithammer, and Frances Rundel. CHEERLEADER The Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerleaders were very active this year. Besides promoting school spirit, they participated in two cheerleading conventions. At the State Convention, our Varsity Cheer¬ leaders placed among the top ten in dress and cheering style. At a Regional Convention, held in Webberville, the Varsity Cheerleaders placed third of thirty three groups and the Junior Varsity placed first of thirty-three groups. They were also on WMSB-TV with Coach Dunckel and the basketball team. The Staff feels that both Varsity and Junior Varsity did an exceptional job during the Football and Bas¬ ketball Seasons. The Band, under the direction of Mr. Fader, received a First Divi¬ sion at the District Classification and traveled to Mount Pleasant to the State Meet. Here it competed with fifteen Class C bands to ob¬ tain a Second Division. Each member of the band received a first place and a second place medal for the band’s two performances. Cheaper by the Dozen was the play chosen by the Seniors as their annual class play. As the cast looks back upon rehearsals, they have pleasant memories. The Seniors had two weeks of evening practice in which to prepare the three act comedy. With Mrs. Bernice Smith as director and capable people in leading parts, the play slowly took shape. Success was reached when a large profit was made during the two night performances. CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN Characters, left to right: E. Fisher, M. Root, K. Smith, B. McKenzie, S. Reagh, B. L. This organization was formed to establish better understanding between parents, teachers, and students. It has presented many interesting programs this year and has gained an important place in community activities. The 1959-1960 Haslett debate team had an interesting season. Competition with such schools as Eastern, Sexton, St. Mary, etc. was rough; nevertheless, our team won two of the four debates. Another set of debates had to be called off because one of the team members became Hospital Bound. Lee Sumpter and Jeff Rogers were the two returning members of last year ' s team. Leila Renner, a freshman with a good future in debate, and Jim Driscoll, a junior, were the newcomers on the team. Lee and Leila were negative colleagues: Jim and Jeff, affirm¬ ative. Mrs. Smith is the debate coach. The debate question was: Resolved that the United States government should sub¬ stantially increase its control of labor unions. The banquet lasted from 6:30 to 8:00 and the dance from 8:30 till 12:00. The High School principal, F. J. Jappinga gave the welcome, the Reverend Charles O. Erickson offered the invocation before the banquet, and Conrad Nathan gave a fine speech after the banquet. The Modernaires, a very talented musical group, provided the dance with most enjoyable music. The center of the gym was graced by a fountain and surrounding it were several palm trees. Couples were seated at small tables around the dancing area. The overall appearance of the decorations was most pleasing to the eye. The Senior Class of 1960 wishes to express appreciation to the Junior Class of 1960 for the nice banquet and the colorful dance. It was an enjoyable evening for everyone as the Hawaiian theme was successfully carried out at the banquet and dance. TAYLOR PUBLISHING CO. The makings of a yearbook are great. Credit should be given to those who made this Dixit possible. In the fall of 1959 the staff consisted of Dave Abendroth, Dan Condon, Pam Darbon, Erik Dropping, Adeline Helming, Tom Hicks, Dan Hynes, Sara Jappinga, Frances Rnndel, Nancy Runyon, Jann Smith, and Kay Stanke. You ' ve undoubtedly noticed the fine artwork. It is the product of Dave Abendroth, Dan Condon, and Erik Dropping. Pictures were the responsibility of Nancy Runyon and Kay Stanke. Advertising, by far the most difficult job, was taken care of by Pam Dar¬ bon and Jann Smith. Aside from acting as advertising editor, Jann spent many hours typing up copy. Many thanks to her for that. Dan Hynes and Tom Hicks were completely in charge of the Sports section. They, too, did a thorough job. Tom is another staff member who did other things besides Sports for the Dixit. ” Sara Jappinga, business manager, wrote out receipts, totaled up assets, and figured costs for this financially unsound venture. Frances Rundel proof¬ read many copy sheets, as did Adeline Helming. To Adeline the Dixit owes most of its praise. Many Saturdays were spent at her home grinding out a Yearbook. She willingly spent extra hours doing jobs which required patience (and Brains!). There are others, too, such as advertisers, teachers, and parents, to whom credit is due.
