— - . — As the school year passes, we pause to catch a final glimpse of everything we have done: our Sophomore carnival. Junior and Senior class- plays, and our Junior-Senior banquet and prom, Chez Paree. All of these and many more fine times will always live in our memories. Our friends, our classmates, our teachers have all played a part in this our senior year, as they have throughout our years at school. We have attempted to preserve these mem¬ ories through word and picture in this, the 1959 Dixit. You, the students of Haslett High School, made it, you lived it. We hope that you enjoy it. The Staff DEDICATION We, the 1959 Senior Class, wish to acknowl¬ edge Mr. Hervey A. Beutler for the patient guidance and helpful assistance which he ren¬ dered to us in the many activities during our first three years of high school. We sincerely regret that because of his new position as Juniot High School Principal, he could not be with us as class advisor in our Sen¬ ior year. To Mr. Beutler we again express our appre¬ ciation and thanks for the extra effort he put forth in our behalf. MR. HERVEY A. BEUTLER CLASS COLORS: Lavendar and Silver CLASS FLOWER: Lilac CLASS SPONSORS: Mr. Devlin Mr. Lerch Mrs. Smith Mr. Stolz CTilBMiBiBfB MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT To the Class of 1959: You are the first class to be graduated from the new Haslett High School building, but you will still carry on the traditions and values prized by the graduates of the old building, as it is the same institution housed in a new home. You have responsibilities to live up to and missions to fulfill. I hope that all of you who can possibly do so will further your education beyond high school graduation. Today as never before a specialized education enables a person to live a useful and satisfying life. You can be useful as a citizen and be a part of the community, state, and nation in which you live in direct ratio to the amount of education you have and the thought and energy that you put into your life. All of these things give you satisfaction and peace of mind that can be gained in no other way. Congratulations on achieving your first goal toward a useful and satisfy¬ ing life. H. M. Murphy Class of ' 59: As you arrive at another milestone in your life, your graduation from high school, I desire to take this op¬ portunity to congratulate you and grant you best wishes for a happy and successful future. In these days of stresses and anxieties young men and women, trained and educated, are needed to help keep our everyday occurrences in proper focus and perspec¬ tive. I feel that each of you can fill the niche that awaits you in your future endeavors. I sincerely hope that you will reflect your educational and social experi¬ ences as you make decisions for yourself and your fel¬ low man. Sincerely F. J. Jappinga RAYMOND YERKIE Trustee THEODORE WILSON Trustee WINFIELD HARRISON Secretary CHARLES SHEPPARD Treasurer JAY JENNINGS President MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD The Haslett Board of Education wishes to congratulate the senior class of 1959 We hope you have enjoyed your year in the new high school building and have been able to profit from the curriculum. The Board of Education, with the help of many committees and individ¬ uals, has endeavored to supply the best possible in buildings, equipment, cur¬ riculum offerings, and faculty members so that you will be well equipped to enter the world of work and business or continue your education in the college or university of your choice. Haslett is a fine community in which to live. Parents and other friends of the school have been most cooperative and willing to help pay for the neces¬ sary buildings and operational costs of the school. We have tried to merit this confidence by giving much thought to the wel¬ fare of both citizens and pupils. This is sometimes very difficult as there are conflicting interests and ideas, some of which cannot be reconciled. We hope you are always proud of Haslett High School and we are sure that we can always be proud of you and glad to acknowledge you as a graduate. Best wishes for your continued success. Led by co-captains Kris Shoemaker, Roger Miller and Bob Schram the Vikings swept to five league victories in six games. Ending the Stockbridge string at seventeen consecutive victories high¬ lighted the campaign and also enabled the Vikings to gain a share of the league title. . j Bob Schram, Kris Shoemaker, Roger Miller, Chuck Jennings and Jim Chambers were selected by league coaches as members of the all¬ league team. After weeks of practice and hard work, they played a six game schedule, winning four, tying one, and losing one. The Freshmen for the first time had their own team, so the Junior Varsity consisted mostly of Sophomores, with a few of the better Freshmen and a sprinkling of Juniors. The members of the J.V. teams are the future varsity players, and if they continue to work hard and improve as they did this year, they should be a great help to the Varsity team of the future. - Coach Oland Dunckel SEASON RECORD Haslett 20 0 Fowlerville Haslett 18 12 Willi amston Haslett 20 19 Okemos Haslett 6 6 Leslie Haslett 13 0 Stockbridge Haslett 14 16 Okemos BASKETBALL 1958-1959 COACH OLAND DUNCKEL VARSITY... The basketball team was fortunate this year in that it had a beautiful new gym in which to play. It took the boys a while to get used to the space of the new gym. This year’s team had only one returning starter from the championship team of a year ago. It also lacked height, which is necessary for bas¬ ketball teams to have a good year. The starting team started slowly and had a hard time in winning a game on our new floor. Eventually this feat was accomplished and other victories started to come. As the year progressed, the team improved, and in the district tournament played its finest basketball of the year, winning the first two games and losing the finals to a good team. Outlooks for the coming year are good, with many fine prospects moving up from the Junior Varsity - who had a very fine season. These players mixed with the returning lettermen should make the basketball picture here at Haslett very bright. JUNIOR VARSITY ... The Junior Varsity had a highly successful season as they swept to the J.V. title and conquered two non-conference opponents. Featuring good team depth, a full court press, an active defense with their pattern offense, and utilizing the Hamilton out of bounds sleeper, the JV’s were a colorful team to watch. Determination and an unwillingness to give up brought many triumphs that seemed out of reach. This plus a 24 point splurge in three minutes of the final game of the year has given Coach Dun- ckel something to talk about over the long summer. The Haslett thin clads had a very successful season this year as they swept the county league meet by a large margin and were also represented in the state finals. CLASS POEM AND PROPHECY For us, the class of fifty-nine, the time is drawing nigh To leave our friends and classmates soon, to Haslett say good-bye. For all of us our training has supplied an impetus. But what will time and fortune bring? What will become of us? Let ' s gaze into a crystal ball or, since we haven ' t one, Just try to guess what lies in store in time that’s just beyond. The time has come, as some will say, to speak of l ovely things. It won ' t be long until there shine the prize engagement rings. Who are these lucky couples that share dreams of what’s to be? P ' raps Carole and Bob, Dianne and Chuck, or Mike and Bonnie D. Some lucky ladies such as Jean and Dorothy and Marlene Already wed the ones they love, and live a life serene. But there are other things in life than marriage and romance, And everyone has reached some goal through skill or circumstance. Two members from our class are now successful engineers. Frank Hart and then Bill Porterfield have followed these careers. Tom Steinbach spreads the word of God, relieving men from strife. And Cherie and Pat Davis lead a quiet type of life. Dick Balzer traded his convert and drives a limousine. Others, like Professor Robert Shackelton Wintermute, merely exist to take the rhythm out of poetry. Jean Miler won the D.A.R. while still a high school lass, And now she serves society as she once served our class. Ann Smith, sincere and quiet, has found her great happiness. Our all-star team of Darryl and Kris has also met success. Both Parker and Rog Miller joined an eating marathon. But overate, and both were dead, before we learned who won. Red Conn, who studied Mobile homes, sells them successfully. And Larry Ammann can ' t decide just what he wants to be. Steve Scott received a lucky break (from Alkatrz, that is). Elaine, most fortunate young girl, won thousands on a quiz. Marge Shiffer won a young man ' s heart by baking cherry pies. The world still comes to Edith ' s feet to see her sparkling eyes. James Morgan seems contented to live simply as a bum. G. Fenska much prefers to see what makes an engine hum. Kay Raby is at Central with her pleasantness so rare. Mt.
