ATHLETICS OVERUSING TT TO THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1958: Please accept my own personal best wishes and allow me to extend sincere congratulations to you on behalf of the people of Michigan. Graduation time is always one of happiness and achieve¬ ment. The diploma represents dedicated hard work over the past years. Graduation is also the beginning of a new life. For many, it is only a milestone marking the beginning of a higher and specialized education. I earnestly hope that such will be the case for all of the graduates of 1958. For those who must move immediately into the world earning a living, the challenge is equally great, for you immediately become one of the citizens upon whom our economic well-being depends. Whatever the coming months find you doing, I wish you the very best of luck. God bless you. Sincerely, -- Governor The higher we climb the brighter the view. +J) We are entering a new era in our lives. This is the time for which we have been preparing ourselves these past twelve years. Our future happi¬ ness, our security, our well¬ being depend upon how well we have used this time, and our willingness to put what we have learned to work. These are our best years, for here our many friend¬ ships have grown, our finest lessons learned, and our good times spent. It is with this in mind that the DIXIT for 1958 has been assembled, so that in years to come we may look back and share once again all that has meant so much to us. To Millard John Lerch whose guiding hand has helped us climb to this important milestone in our lives, we, the Senior Class, gratefully dedicate the 1958 Dixit as a small token of our appreciation. DIXIT HISTORY The DIXIT, an annual pub¬ lication by the Senior Class, had its beginning in 1936 under the name of HIGH LITE and was entirely a handmade pro¬ duction. Its present name was given to it the next year, and the reason why remains a mystery, for the word DIXIT in Latin means he said. How¬ ever, it has remained the DIXIT ever since, the tradition¬ al trademark for our yearbook. In 1936, the HIGH LITE had a paper cover, looseleaf pages, and the pictures were all pasted in their proper location. Each year brought more improve¬ ments until finally we have the handsome and cherishable year¬ book with which we are all so familiar. o , v - -v-_ £ i v V.. fc.J •; . ' f«:r -■ ■- - -tl V- -. -■,. % TO THE 1958 GRADUATES OF HASLETT HIGH SCHOOL Michigan ' s mighty Mackinac bridge not only connects two great peninsulas but it sym¬ bolizes their unity and strength. May all of you build and travel over such bridges in the days to come. May you also look back with pride and happiness to the first of these structures, your graduation. H. M. Murphy s v e Your graduation from Haslett High School is a bridge from youth to adulthood. Over this bridge, providing you have built it well, you may travel on to many fields of endeavor. You may further your education in any of Michigan’s institutions of higher learning or you may go to other states or even foreign countries for this purpose. Your graduation from such an institution will be another bridge over which you may travel to happiness, wealth, service to mankind, or pure intellectual enjoyment. A great bridge is a poem in steel and concrete; built, not without sorrow, tragedy, and pain. Education is a bridge of concentration, mental application, self denial, courage, deter¬ mination, and intellectual and moral achievement. . . ■• ■. - • f v . la CLASS OF 1958 Your motto, The higher we climb, the brighter the view, was very well chosen. You have climbed high and there are still greater heights for which to strive. Your view in the future should become brighter and brighter. We want to congratulate you upon achieving that summit which is graduation day. The seriousness with which you have considered your past assignments will determine your future success. Your parents also are to be commended. Their love, patience, and sacri¬ fices for you are unbounding, and you should be ever grateful to them. We sincerely hope that you will come back and visit with us often. We will always be interested in you. With these few thoughts we wish you continued success and happiness. F. J. The high standards of sportsmanship and courage established by the team are goals future Viking teams will strive to meet. Captains Bob Lerch and Dennis Flood were inspirational leaders that held the team together in many tough situations. Ronnie Ferguson, leading scorer in the league, was selected on the first All-County team. Bob Morris, Don Taber, John Carter, Dick Imhoff, and Dennis Flood were hon¬ orable mention selections on the County Team. With one starter returning from the year before, a rebuilding job was necessary. Due to the good attitude and hard work of the members of the squad, the team started to improve and rapidly became one of the powers in the league, eventually tying for the championship. This year’s squad was one of the hardest working teams I have had the pleasure to coach, Desire and willingness to learn are the big reasons why this team had the suc¬ cess that it did. The senior boys did a fine job, and will be missed next year, but the attitude of these boys, along with the Juniors on the team, should leave good standards for teams of the future to follow.
