AU PUBLIC LIBRA TCL 318 0326 School Building We, the students ot Haskins High School, can never express our feelings for the tradidions within these ivy covered Walls. Though age may creep up on the structure of our school, it can never remove the many memories of our teachers, fellow students, and friends. May she long stand and hold the meaning to generations that follow that she has held for us. The Student Body Dedication We, the students of Haskins School, dedicate this yearbook of 1952, to our departed friend, and great all-round fellow, Tommy Stewart. Tommy was very active in activities of his class and also a fine addition to both baseball and basketball teams. Tommy lost his life asa result of a freakish accident which occured in the Wood County Baseball Tournament. We will never be able to show our sorrow and bereavement over the loss of one of our finest boys. Students of Haskins Schools va : et 177 1h Board of Education Left to Right: Mrs. W. Walker, P. They were; Marilyn Moore, Joyce Fischer, Charles Walker, Ruth Gibbs, Robert Asmus, Virginia Genson, Joanne Asmus, Herbert Peters, Marie Myers, Gerald Bower, and Robert Heiman. During the next seven years, we gained the following class- mates; Wanda Moore, Robert Sabo, Francis Naegele, Ronald Youngpeter, Ruth Symon, Jack Armitage, Jim Hessman, Gerald Duty, Betty Wolfe, Alice Allison, and Lorin Shonk. We lost the following: Charles Thomas, Herbert Peters, Lorin Shonk, Robert Sabo, Gerald Bower, Betty Wolfe, Alice Allison, Ronald Youngpeter, and Ruth Wymon. We entered the Freshman year with fifteen members, eleven of whom completed their four years of high school with us. Our sponsors for this year were: Mrs. Kamenik and Miss Reed. We were initiated into high school by the Sophomore class, otherwise this year was very uneventful.. The Sophomore year found us with the same number of pupils, but with Mrs. Jolley as our sponsor. We initiated the Freshman class. We had class parties which were enjoyed Fy ali. In our Junior year we lost Carol Andrews. Mr. Larson was our sponsor for this year. We sponsored the Junior- Senior Banquet, which was held on the evening of May 4, 1951, at the Toledo Women’s Club. We also gave the play, ‘Professor, How Could You?’’ We gave a dance in the spring of 1951 with Harry Lanning’s orchestra playing. The Senior year brought us to the close of our high school career. On May 19, 1952 eleven persons were graduated from Haskins High School. They include the following: Joanne Asmus, Dorothy Snyder, Jim Hessman, Bill Browne, Ruth Gibbs, Virginia Genson, Marilyn Moore, Tom Armitage, Francis Naegele, Charles Walker, and Robert Asmus. During our Senior year we applied our excess energy to various money making projects to finance our trip to Washington D. C. and New York. Some of our ‘‘get rich quick’’ schemes were; a dance, a bake sale, a talent show, and a play. We also sold pop, popcorn, and candy at the basketball games. Senior Class Will As we, the Senior Class of 1952 embark on our careers into the world we think of our school careers. We want to leave memories of ourselves so we bequeath the following: To the Juniors as a whole we leave one slightly used class sponsor, Mr. Van Atta, hoping that he isn't too badly mutilated next year. To the Sophomores we leave our good looks. To the Freshmen we leave our ‘‘brains’’ such as they may be, hoping they make better use of them than we did. To the teachers we leave various frustration complexes. Jim Hessman cheerfully leaves his ability to ast up in English class without getting too many detentions for it to Jim Ryder and Darrel Duncan. Dorothy Snyder leaves her ability of going steady to anyone iu the Junior class who thinks he can maintain the record she did. To Milayne Walker she willis her slimness. Bill Browne leaves his ability of not getting detentions to Darrei Duncan. Joanne Asmus wills her ability to go steady and also her curly hair .o Barbara Rathbun. To Jack Armitage she cheerfully wills her ability of driving a car carefully. Tom Armitage wills his permanent seat in detention hall to Jim Ryder, hoping he doesn't wear it out too soon. Ruth Gibbs wills her good looks to Ann Arm itage, and she also wills her ability to be with a tall guy to Jeanette Hummel. Virginia Genson wills her happy-go-lucky ways to Gerry Watts and hopes she doesn't get into too much trouble because of them. Marilyn Moore wills her task of trying to get one certain man to Arlene Bower. Charles Walker leaves his good grades to John Falls hoping that someday John may become President of the United States. Francis Naegele wills his ability to roller skate to Phyllis Mourdock, hoping she will accomplish much this summer. Bob Asmus wills his ability to drive a car while looking at his companion to Marie Myers, hoping she doesn’t get’ involved in anv accidents. 18 s 9 Senior Class Prophecy It is the year 1970 and we, Mr. and Mrs, Paul Browne, are at the Detroit Space-port buying our first tickets to Mars. After purchasing our tickets we started toward Rocket Elevator 4 where our ship was waiting. A red cap ap- proached us and offered to carry our bags. He seemed familiar and upon looking at him more closely, I saw to my surprise that he was Francis Naegele. Re- membering that he used to work in a meat market, I asked him what happened to his job there and he said, ‘‘Sausages and hot dogs have gone out of style.’ We entered the ship, taking seats near a window. All at once [ hearda familiar voice telling the passengers to fasten their safety belts. The voice was that of Virginia Genson, Chief Stewardess. She said she just loved her job, because she got to see so many of the sights of the world. Upon landing on Mars, we hailed a rocket taxi and found the driver to be Tom Armitage. Tom said he liked driving a rocket taxi because you go so tast you can't get into trouble. He then took us to our hotel. The next morning we bought tickets for a tour of Mars. While we were waiting for the tour to begin, I noticed a man and a woman with their three children. Looking at them stirred old memories and I was astonished to find that they were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hessman (formerly Dorothy Snyder.) Then began an enthusing conversation. Dorothy and Jim had just come from their home planet, Venus, where Jim is chief engineer of a large minins company. Dorothy had just published a book called, ‘‘The Peculiarities of Earthmen.’”’ The next day we continued our tour by visiting the capitol of Mars. Upon arriving we witnessed a ceremony dance. It was for the installation of the city’s first woman mayor, who turned out to be Joanne Asmus. We went to visit Joanne that evening and she introduced us to her secretary and to her business advisor. Her secretary turned out to be Marilyn Moore and her advisor, Charles Walker. We had a very enjoyable evening talking over past experiences. After a wonderful trip we boarded the Rocket for the return home. We were informed that the captain always introduced himself to the passengers. After taking off, a huge television set flicker ed on and we were very shocked to see who the captain was. It was my old schoolmate, Bob Asmus. He told the passengers that they could visit the control room if they wished, so as.soon as we were free we went to the captain's cabin. Bob was very glad to see us. After landing on earth, Bob took us to his home, which was a lovely pent- house apartment. He told us the apartment house was also the home of a world famous model. We thought it would be a novel experience to visit a model so we went to her apartment. A maid allowed us to enter and called her mistress. You can imagine my complete surprise to learn that the model was Ruth Gibbs. After a very interesting talk we left, for we were to go home the next day and had a busy day ahead of us. We arrived home the next day and agreed it had been a wonderful vacation. Will this really happen to the Senior Class of 1952;? Well, wait and see. 19 20 aun S a = e— ; : | —= ¥ iy. x | Ss AEs. ,. =a ora WES a Qs ‘WW Ape Se eh oat hi 2 li 4 : : ae Junior Class ANN ARMITAGE JACK ARMITAGE ARLENE BOWER DARREL DUNCAN JOHN FALLS JEANETTE HUMMEL PHYLLIS MOURDOCK MARIE MYERS BARBARA RATHBUN JIM RYDER MILAYNE WALKER GERRY WATTS Sophomore Class MARY BOBEL ROBERT BRINGMAN EUGENE BROWN { JOANNE ECKEL KEVIN ENRIGHT WILLIAM FOX CAROL FRETTER WILLIAM GARRETT JOYCE GROLLE EVON MYERS SANDRA MYERS JEAN OVITT SHIRLEY SMITH ALICE SNYDER JEAN WEIHL 24 DONALD ASMUS JEAN GERDEMAN JEANNINE NORTH Freshman Class CHUCK COMBS JANE GERDEMAN BILL KOCH RONALD ASMUS BETTY CUNNINGHAM JOHN HALBERT RODNEY PETTEYS 25 BILL DAVISSON JIM HITSMAN PATSY NICHOLSON EVA BROWNE DONALD HUMMEL JOHN RATHBUN SEATED: SECOND ROW: THIRD ROW: J. The Reverend Harry Richmond, minister of the Haskins Presbyterian Church was the speaker of the evening with the Reverend Carl Heller of the Haskins Lutheran Church assisting. The members of the Senior class were ushered into the services by the members of the Junior class, while the high school band played the processional march. Special music was furnished by the Girls’ Chorus. The underclassmen and the faculty wish to express their wishes of Godspeed, good luck and congratulations to each and every member of the class as they leave us as graduates. Graduation Commencement exercises were held on Friday evening, May 16, 1952. The girls of the class wore white caps and gowns and the boys wore blue caps and gowns. The salutatory and valedictory speeches were given by James Hessman and Joanne Asmus, respectively. Special awards were presented to the valedictorian, salutatorian, and the class president by Mr. R. E. Van Atta, Superintendent of the Haskins Schools. The candidates for graduation were: presented to the Board of Education by Mr. H. E. Larson, Principal of the Haskins Schools. The diplomas were presented to the members of the graduating class by Mr. Gordon Wenig, president of the Board of Education. The response was given by the president of the class, Bill Browne . The invocation and the benediction were given by the Reverend Carl Heller, of the Haskins Lutheran Church. The class chose as their flower the white carnation; and for their colors, scarlet and grey. For their motto they chose ‘“‘Make Yours A Worth- while Goal And Climb For It,’’ by Harriet Chalmers Adams. The commencement speaker was Dr. William A. Rex, former leader of the American Council of Churches, and minister of the First Presbyterian Church of Van Wert|for sixteen years. Dr. Rex is well known among the people of Northwestern Ohio for his church work and work as speaker for high school commencements in the area. a Senior Class Play ‘‘This Ghost Business,’’ a three-act mystery comedy by Al. W. Clark was presented by the Senior class on April 15, 1952. Joe Hardy, played by Bill Browne, and Eddie Canfield, by Tom Armitage, bought a cottage at the lake, where they brought their wives, Joanne Asmus and Ruth Gibbs, for a quiet and peaceful vacation. Their neighbor, Dorothy Snyder, came to startle them with the news that their cottage was haunted. The appearance of phosts and the weird noises added to the excitement. : The negro cook, Magnolia, who was Vriginia Genson, was constantly threatening to leave. It taxed Eddie’s scheming to the utmost to think of plans | to keep her there. Marie, the French maid, was played by Marilyn Moore; Stevens, the former owner, was Bob Asmus; Bill, a tramp, was Jim Hessman; and Mose, Magnolia’s boy friend was taken by Chuck Walker. The scenes were hilarious, but there was enough mystery to keep the audience in suspense until the end. Junior Class Play The Junior class presented its class play, ‘‘The Mad Hatters,'’ on November 2, 1951. The Hatter family lived up to their name. They were mad. The mother, Margaret Hatter, was nuts about dramatics; the father, Joe Hatter, about fishing; Gigi, their daughter, about athletics; and Bunny, the son, about photography. Grandma Hatter decided to make her family try to be self-supporting for three months. After that trial period she would renew their monthly allowances, if they proved capable of earning their own living. Their decision to make their hobbies pay caused plenty of things to happen. All seemed lost in the end, when Joe came to the rescue. The cast included Jeanette Hummel, as Gigi Hatter; Ann Armitage,as Angelica, the housekeeper; Jim Ryder, as Bunny Hatter; John Falls, as Joe } Hatter; Barbara Rathbun, as Margaret Hatter; and Gerry Watts, as Diana, the ; youngest of the family. Others in the play were: Marie Myers, in the role of Nancy Hayward; Jack Armitage, Mugzie Jullen; Darrel Duncan, Henry Harrison, a playwright; Milayne Walker, Elizabeth Harrison; and Arlene Bower, Clara Sheldon, a talent scout. 36 Paper Staff The School Paper Stafffor the 1951 1952 school year was elected in the spring of 1951 by the students of the upper five grades. The staff advisor was Miss Koerber who was also the Commercial teacher. She directed us on the articles to be printed, and helped us organize our work. ‘The Crimson and Gold”’ is also a com- munity paper in that different happenings that occur around town are printed in the paper. The circulation of the paper for this year was about one hundred and eighty. They were sent to some of our service men and to friends living in other states, as well as our own community JOANNE ASMUS Editor SEATED: R. Asmus, B. Rathbun, J. Asmus, J. Hummel, A. Armitage, C.
