Haskell Indian The home of quality education for the American Indian since 1884, Haskell now has approximately 1,000 men and women representing 50 to 60 tribes from all over the nation. Young and older, married and unmarried, the students enroll in this com- prehensive iunior college for its vocational program or in the general education area to prepare for a college degree. ln its second year as a Kansas accredited iunior college, Haskell constantly works for improvements. Curriculum revisions bring new courses to meet the needs of Indian students today. Staff members work for high- er degrees so they can impart more knowl- edge. To meet accreditation requirements of the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges, Haskell is doing a two-year, self-evaluation study. Other changes include a ten-year, exten- sive building program. Opened in the fall of 1971 was a new Automotive Complex with Junior College the latest equipment, and later a new Ma- sonry building was finished. Under construc- tion now are a new Graphic Arts building and a new Electronics building. Near future, building plans call for a new dining hall, additional dormitories, and an addition to Sequoyah. Social change also came this year as stu- dents became more involved in a broader school-community life. Dormitory rules were relaxed as students showed more responsi- bility. Library hours were lengthened, and school work became more serious as teachers enforced strict attendance policies. Groups organized for political involvement in na- tional and local Indian affairs and for help- ing the poor and the handicapped. A few students had cars, but the favorite pasttime was still walking to Harper Valley or down- town to shop. Yes, Haskell changed somewhat during 1971-1972, as it should, but kept ever in mind its motto, Onward, Haskell.

The Real Indian An Indian is many things, He may be an artist Or a musician But most of all he is human, Living in the same world as Whites. A Redman will watch the ways of his people Learning the old crafts, Yet he also learns the White way He makes new crafts to help him survive today. The Indian believes in the old And works for the new culture, His life a combination of the two, Yet the Indian survives today. Within these pages are examples of Indians Their life of old and now the new, May the pages explain what is said here.
