Address all communications to The Indian Leader, Haskell Indian Junior College, Lawrence. Kansas 66044. Published in accordance with Interior Department Appropriation Act, 1940, approved May 10, 1939, and approved by the director of the Bureau of Budget. 1 Haskell Indian The home of quality education for the American Indian since 1884, Haskell now has approximately 1,000 men and women representing 50 to 60 tribes from all over the nation. Young and older, married and unmarried, the students enroll in this com- prehensive iunior college for its vocational program or in the general education area to prepare for a college degree. ln its second year as a Kansas accredited iunior college, Haskell constantly works for improvements. Curriculum revisions bring new courses to meet the needs of Indian students today. Staff members work for high- er degrees so they can impart more knowl- edge. To meet accreditation requirements of the North Central Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges, Haskell is doing a two-year, self-evaluation study. Other changes include a ten-year, exten- sive building program. Opened in the fall of 1971 was a new Automotive Complex with Junior College the latest equipment, and later a new Ma- sonry building was finished. Under construc- tion now are a new Graphic Arts building and a new Electronics building. Near future, building plans call for a new dining hall, additional dormitories, and an addition to Sequoyah. Social change also came this year as stu- dents became more involved in a broader school-community life. Dormitory rules were relaxed as students showed more responsi- bility. Library hours were lengthened, and school work became more serious as teachers enforced strict attendance policies. Groups organized for political involvement in na- tional and local Indian affairs and for help- ing the poor and the handicapped. A few students had cars, but the favorite pasttime was still walking to Harper Valley or down- town to shop. Yes, Haskell changed somewhat during 1971-1972, as it should, but kept ever in mind its motto, Onward, Haskell. ,- ,wa A .. i- Av 5655 Wg - : V V IN ...SS -fame V. 1- 9 X N ,,, . A Redman will watch the ways of his people Learning the old crafts, Yet he also learns the White way He makes new crafts to help him survive today. The Indian believes in the old And works for the new culture, His life a combination of the two, Yet the Indian survives today. Within these pages are examples of Indians Their life of old and now the new, May the pages explain what is said here. She liked to work on an individual basis with the stu- dents, and all her students counted her as a friend, said Miss Selma Hoffmann, Business Department Head. Miss Dorsey and Miss Doublerunner died in an auto- mobile accident December 7, 1971. Both 'were freshmen maioring in Secretarial Science in the Business Department. Miss Dorsey, a Choctaw-Creek, was a Pompon girl and a member of the Haskell Secretaries and Accountants Club. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amos Dorsey, live in Okla- homa City. Meet- ing every Tuesday in the Rose Room for lunch, members planned the repair of Christmas toys for needy tots with Marine Reserves, an Easter egg hunt for elementary school children, and canoe rides with small children. They ushered at campus functions, supported the basketball team as a group, going to two out-of-town games, and sold popcorn and sponsored movies for money-making projects. In April the group attended the district conven- tion at Salina where Milo Yellowhair tbelowl was elected, district lieutenant governor. Sponsors were George Martin, H. E. Llewellyn, and Karl Talawyma. Ron Paxton served as president, Ben Truiillo, vice-president, Danny Benally, secretary, and David Jeff Toledo, treasurer., 1 we Pictured in the top right are Ben Truiillo, Geo rge Hubbard, Karl Talawyma, H. Advanced planning, diligent work, and careful preparation went into the produc- tion of the i972 Indian Leader. After gathering organizations, activi- ties, sports, and class pictures, much time was devoted to designing layouts and cropping pictures. Cooperation and individual efforts of the staff members were important in making the l972 Indian leader a memor- able picture of Haskell Indian Junior College. Dorothy Nez, a Paiute from Reno, Ne- vada, was the designer of the 1972 year- book cover. Milo Yellowhair, Co-Editor, radio announcer, and photographer for the newspaper and yearbook The Indian Leader staff and Journalism Department have been deeply involved in the coverage of important events that signaled change at Haskell, such as the dorm hours, the investigation of problems concerning students, and changes in the school curriculum. Other important events covered and photographed by the newspaper staff were the Haskell Board of Regents meetings, the Billy Mills press conference, and the construction of new buildings on campus. The student work program, Haskell financial affairs and national Indian news were also covered. A special edition was published at the end of the year which included a picture summary of the whole year. The I97I-72 school year showed such changes in the Indian Leader as the picture page and the design of the name plate. The Journalism Department attended a Journa- lism Conference at Kansas State College at Pittsburg and one at the University of Missouri in Kansas City. They also visited the KU Journalism Department, Lawrence Journal-World, and the Kansas City Star. The Journalism Department also spon- sored programs weekly on KLWN and KANU radio stations. With a stated purpose of providing educational experiences in the raising of and expenditure of funds for activities not provided by the Government, the Board planned, organized, and coordinated a cultural, social, and recreational program for all students. The five maior dances, weekend dances, an Indian dance and game night, the intramural pragram, the Sadie Hawkins Day activities, the Spring Fling, and professional entertainment in the Coffee House were all provided by this group. Money for expenses was raised when the Board sponsored Wednesday night movies and a basketball game by a professional women's team. MANY HANDS GUIDE HASKELL From Washin-gton, D. C., to Anadarko, Okla., from the North, South, East and West, many persons work at directing the pro- grams and activities at Haskell lndian Junior College. Under the Bureau of lndian Affairs in the Department of the Interior, Haskell looks to Commissioner, Louis R. Bruce, for top leadership. ln the Area Office at Anadarko, Director, Sidney M. Carney, a Haskell alumni, takes personal interest in this school. Wallace E. Galluzzi, president-superintendent since 1969, has guided Haskell through the planning stages of the change- over from a vocational-business college to a school giving lndian people a choice of a vocation or a college degree. Assisting him has been an excellent administrative staff composed of Everette E. Bowman, Seth Irving, Bill Burgess, Jack Naylor, Frank Quiring and Haddon Moats. Under these men are department heads, instructors, dormitory staff, secretaries, accountants, and the very necessary plant man- agement personnel headed by Joseph Gaddy. All contribute work and ideas to the successful completion of a school year. To provide lndian self-determination came the appointment of a cosmopolitan, able Board of Regents dedicated to making the best comprehensive iunior college in the United States. Formed in the spring of 1971, the Board is composed of representatives from all areas served by the school. lt meets quarterly to discuss and im- plement progress. A unique feature of the Board allows voting rights for one student representative from the Student Senate. Members of the Board of Regents are: Robert Billie, Tom Dailey, W. E.
