N I ST RAT I ON The Reception for the New Hasklell Staff On the beautiful, cool evening' of September 19, l967, a reception was held at 8:00 p.m. in Sacaiawea Hall to honor the new staff members. All the staff and faculty, including their husbands and wives, were invited to greet and welcome the new staff members. Mr. Sidney Carney, a l939 graduate of Haskell, who serves as the new Director of Anadarko, Oklahoma, Office was the honored guest for the evening. A retired staff member, Mrs. Margaret Sanders, who had been a member of the BIA for 30 years, received a Certificate of Meritorious Service and a cash award for superior performance. Superintendent Thomas Tommaney presented these awards. s rTo conclude the delightful evening, punch and cookies were served by Miss Mae Flanigan and Mrs. .lack Mauterer, from a table which was beautifully decorated with autumn colors. Administration, Personnel and De- partment Heads, who were host and hostesses for the event, 'assisted with the serving. As the reception came to a close, all the staff members were more confident that working to prepare-the students for the years ahead would be much easier be- cause of cordial staff relations. i 6 Eddie Fisher, Administrative Officer Acting in the official capacities of Ad'min- istrative Officer and Haskell Alumni Asso- ciation President, l want to congratulate you on your graduation achievement. l have worked side by side with many of you and know firsthand that you possess the qualities that are require-d to succeed in your endeavors. Recently a friend' and l were enumerating the fields in which Haskell graduates have excelled an-d we were amazed at the size of our listing. You, too, can excel because others before you have demonstrated beyond a shadow of a doubt that it can be done. A Wallace E. Galluzzi, Principal lt is certainly a pleasure for me to congrat- ulate the Senior Class of 1968 on its success as a class at Haskell Institute. You are surely destined to take your place among the other great classes that have gone on be- fore you. We feel confi-dent that you will uphold the Haskell tradition of excellence and that your presence will be felt in society by your productivity and good citizenship. We have appreciated the opportunity of knowing you all and the thrills and happi- ness you have given to us by your activities and success at Haskell. May God' bless all of you and may your lives be happy and successful. -N--W W., Z.,-Z 0... ze, hw ff-M., 1,4-V, ff DEPARTMENT HEADS HW 1. . Participation' in student-centered activities was increasingly noticeable during the year. We have set a worthy example of personal conduct in our dormitories and in our campus activities. As stu- dents, we have proved that we can and will accept responsibility. Our training at Haskell properly equips us to cope with the future. Therefore, we as graduates, eagerly anticipate the opportunity to accept the challenges awaiting us in our chosen fields. l8 2, O Q sruo:-f.N'r cou I 1 PICTURES CREATE MEMORIES Veterans Day In observance of Veterans Day, Haskell Students and staff members were present at an assembly to pay tribute to those men and women who assumed the duties of defending our country and democracy during various wars. The placing of the wreath in front of the statue in the auditorium was done by the members of the Indian Club and the Military Color Guard as a tradition in marking our recognitiontof that solemn and memorable date. Christmas The Annual, Nativity 'was presented December I7, I967, in the auditorium. Many talented students helped depict the story of the birth of Christ through singing of christmas songs and the reading of scripture. Thanksgiving The Thanksgiving Day' program presented by Haskell students started the holiday activities on No- vember 22, I967. The Haskell Parade was held on Thanksgiving morning, and a delicious dinner was heartily enioyed by the students. The Powder Puff foot- ball game highlighted the afternoon and Thanksgiving Day ended with an all school dance that night. Election to this council entails both honor and responsibility. As student representives, council members worked with the staff, princi- pal, and the superintendent. They super- vised social Iife, fostered school spirit, and promoted the good name of Haskell throughtout the community. ' The council has sponsored such activities as the Lyceum Program, Talent Show, Sunday movies and all other free movies, dances, and their yearly charity drive. Stu- . . . , dents didn't hesitate to borrow or lend an article to wear to the recep-tion smcetlt was the first formal occasion. For the students of Haskell lnstitute, the Junior-Senior Reception was held in Stidharn Union on September l6, 1967. Each iunior boy and girl was escorted to the reception by a senior boy or tgirl. . u Everyone looked especially neat in appearance and displayed superb manners. As Introductions were being made, the students had an opportunity to become acquainted with the staff members, student council officers, and new classmates and friends. . Students were seen busy chatting with each other throu-ghout the evening. To add to the delightful atmos- phere, refreshments were served. The students enioyed punch, cookies, and mints, which were served from an elegantly, but simply arranged table. As the evening came to a close, the crowd of students in the Union slowly dispersed. They returned to their dorms thinking of the many new friends they had made. Registration for others it was the long awaited final school year. An informal assembly began the registration day's activities at which time Mr. Wallace Galluzzi, the principal, cheerfully welcomed the student body and informed all students of Haskell's rules and regulations. Following this assembly the campus buzzed with excitement as students proceeded to Sequoyah Hall to register for the coming school year. As the students progressed through the registration lines, they received identification cards, class schedules, influenza shots, and purchased activity cards. Representatives of various religious. denominations were present in the library to become acquainted with the studentsfand to familiarize them with their church services and activities held in the area. These eager, curious stu- dents also had the opportunity to visit the student bank. As registration day, August 28, 1967, came to a close, handbooks and pamphlets containing vital information concerning Haskell were issued to the .vJuniors. Nine hundred and ninety-nine weary, yet smiling Haskellites left the building prepared to begin classes the following day. 38 V s M .A .. -. The big day arrived for the students of Haskell Institute. Many deter- mined and enthusiastic students had left homes, families, and friends for ad- vanced education. For some students this was their first year away from home, SENIORS Williams, Ella Navaio Tuba City, Arizona Practical Nursing Williams, Myrna J. For August 29 was the evening for the traditional watermelon feed at Haskell lnstitute. The fresh, ripe watermelons were placed on three long tables. These lucious watermelons were expertly cut by the new staff members. Everyone selected a huge piece of water- melon which he soon consumed. While everyone was eating his watermelon, he had to battle' off insects. However, this made the evening all the more enioyable. As time passed, some of the students, staff members, and guests started headin-g for home. But those students who at- tended Haskell the year before knew what was going to happen and they waited. Tensions were almost at the breaking point when some- one started the whole thing. Students began rushing toward the tables and those who were lucky grabbed whole water- melons and carried them back to their dorms. As the excitement died down, remaining students headed back to their dorms very content at the outcome of the first informal activity of the school year-the watermelon feed. The first print shop was opened in the old school building with Mr. C. E. Seeiver as instructor. The equipment consisted of two platen presses, a cylinder press, hand set type, stones, and a stitcher. The shop remained in this buildin-g until 1903 when it was burned. Shortly thereafter, it was moved to its present location where it has remained since. Ma- chine composition was started which relieved the typesetting prob- lems to a great degree and offset printing was added to the cur- riculum. Recent additions such as the Teletypesetter equipment, a large offset press, and other numerous new pieces of equipment have been added to repla-ce out dated or worn out machines. l PUBLICATIONS SERVICE The Bureau-wide Publications Center was established at Haskell Institute in 1942. The Publications Service was lo- cated in old Sequoyoh Hall and was then under the super- vision of Miss Minnie Gould. The service has changed since then to keep pace with modern demands. The Publications Service at Haskell is a national and international distribu- tions center for publications. Approximately 120,000 publi- cations, most of which are printed by the Haskell Press and other Bureau school printshops, are distributed each year. 68 ,,--Wgvw...-.A. ,. ., Q O jg 42 0 N A DEPART M THE BUSINESS DEPARTMENT The Haskell Student Bank is operated by the Busi- ness Department students who work under the supef' vision of Mrs. Alice Vaughn. The Business Department presently graduates approximately 100 students each year. ln preparing the students for graduation and employment, the Business Department of Haskell offers two years of training in the secretarial, stenographic, typing, clerical, and accounting fields. After completing their education, the students are employed throughout the United States in government and private iobs. Recruiters from various parts of the United States cometo Haskell to interview students for employment. 70 HASKELL LIBRARY The Haskell Library is a pleasant attrac- tive room for research, study, and recrea- tional reading. The library contains l5,000 books, many of which are closely related to the vocations that the students pursue. Its unique collection of over 1,500 books about Indians is of particular interest to students. Since the home localitiesof many students are represented in the newspaper subscriptions, many spend leisure hours catching up on home town news. The mag- azines, both current and back issues, are used extensively in writing research pa- pers. lnteresting, timely displays on bul- letin boards encoura-ge learning and read- ing. RELATED ACADEMIC DEPARTMENT Related subiects have always been con- sidered essential in the course of study at Haskell. As the transition was made from the high school to the post high school level, related academic subiects became an integral part of vocational training. The obiective of the Academic Department is to provide learning experiences that will be of use to a student in his trade and also broaden his background of knowledge so that he will be a success in his social life as well as in his vocation.
