' 'L , ' ' - v Y 1 ' Thomas Tom maney, Superintendent Congratulations to you the members of the Class of 1967. You are now ready to ioin the ever-growing ranks of former Haskell graduates who have brought honor to our Indian population and to themselves. ln the years before you, you will more clearly appreciate the opportunities for learning which were ever present for you while you were in school. When that time comes, I know you will feel as l do that the years as a student on campus were among the most pleasant and worry free of your whole life. Good luck to you in all of those years ahead. Everyone of the staff ioins me in wishing you well! 4 Eddie Fisher, Administrative Officer About a year ago l found a copy of a letter dated June 9, l933. The letter gave the Superintendent of Haskell lnstitute authority to destroy in a hu- mane manner one very old horse which had not been used for some time and five mules which due to their condition could not be used to advantage. We have progressed with our country and no longer depend upon horses and mules. Those of you who are graduating can meet your new chal- lenges with confidence because you have received your training in a modern facility and are well equipped to meet the challenges for which you have been trained. Those of you who will be back next year remember that this school offers to you an opportunity for education that is known only in the prayers of many youths. Take full ad- vantage of this opportunity because in the final analysis you and yours, your tribe and your country will be the benefactors. Wallace E. Galluzzi, Principal We want to take this opportunity to congratu- late the Haskell graduates for 1967. lt has beemi a thrill to watch you develop the skills that willy 1 enable you to take your place alongside the many fine alumni as a contributing member of our society. We hope you have enioyed your stay at Haskell and are able to contribute to the already fine tradition of your Alma Mater. Goodbye and may our best wishes go with you. Mr. Warner Coffin 6 DEDICATION Mr. Warner A. Coffin, .lr., revered director of athletics, passed away in September of 1966. Tony, as he was generally known at Haskell, came here first as a KU freshman after having finished high school at Mayetta, Kansas. During his four years at KU, he worked for room and board at Haskell and became an employee here after receiving his bacheIor's degree. He later earned a master's degree, also at KU. During World War ll he served in the Navy as a lieutenant. He returned. to the staff in 1945, spending most of the next 20 years in athletics. Late in the summer of 1966, Tony was appointed Head of the Related Academic Department as well as director of athletics. Throughout his many years at Haskell, Tony had the thrill of seeing many of his athletes make great records. He expressed great pride, not only for the honors acquired by his athletes, but also for the success achieved by his many students in their personal lives and in their communities after graduation from Haskell! Tony's influence inspired each individual who had contact with him. ln reference to Tony, Carl lBerniel Bierman, Seaman athletic director, stated in the Topeka Daily Capital, They don't come any better. Tony had no bad habits. He was a great influence on those kids there. He iust couldn't be beat. ln describing Tony, Mr. Thomas Tommaney, Superintendent, has said, His personal touch with students, influencing them to do the right thing, instilling self-pride, and building desires to excel, is a treasure which will long be cherished by those of us who knew him as a fellow employee and as a friend to all. The feelings of Haskell students and graduates can be expressed by the words written by Law- rence Watashe, a Haskellite. Mr. Coffin certainly was a great man who did much to help us. lt will never be the same without his smiling face at Haskell. His chief endeavor was always to help and encourage us in learning our responsibilities for the 'outside world'. This inspiring Indian Lead- er will be remembered for generations to come. To a warm smile and a kind word were added a calm look of distinction and a great deal of patience. Combined with these were enthusiasm for students and a dash of humor. These traits, blended with willingness to work and achieve, produced a great man of faithful service and lasting loyalty. Tony Coffin's calm, quiet dignity was a guiding light for hundreds of Haskell students. To him and to the dedicated spirit which survives him, we dedicate the 1967 Indian leader. 7 Reception Held for the New Teachers The new faculty members received a warm welcome on the night of September 20, 1966, when a re- ception was given in their honor at Sacaiawea Hall. All staff members, husbands and wives were invited to the reception. As older staff members arrived, they were introduced to the new faculty members by the administrative, personnel, and department exe- cutives who served as hosts and hostesses for the evening. All staff members enioyed themselves as they renewed old acquaintances and made new ones. To add to the enioyment of the evening, a young Haskell gentleman provided background music for the lively conversation with his piano solos. Registration day began with an informative assembly held in the school auditorium. Following the assembly, the students began the long awaited day of enrollment. Students eagerly anticipated the events which were to occur on that very hectic day. Situated throughout Sequayah Hall were several different stations where the students re- ceived their class schedules and influenza shots. Registration day was highlighted by a variety of activities. Each student was given an opportunity to meet the representative of his preferred religious group. After visiting the student bank, the students were informed of the great variety of school activities and organizations at Haskell. During that very hot afternoon, a power failure added to the confusion and excitement. Due to the lack of electricity and air con- ditioning, some students became rather weary as they stood in line to enroll. for Ions Periods Of time- Of course. the weurinvs was soon forgotten as the students began to dream of all the activities for the year to come. By the close of the long day of registration, the students had become quite enthusiastic, and they were eager for the first day of classes. Tlte students were quite proud and happy to learn that approximately l,000 students had been enrolled at Haskell forthe new year. 'ix 72 Watermelons Here and Watermelons There Gee Whiz Watermelons Everywhere fw,w W., The Watermelon Feed is held during the first week of the fall school term. The primary purpose of this wonderful tradition is to glve the students and staff members an opportunity to become acquainted. This year the unique activity was held on the campus circle near Hiawatha Hall. Several hundred watermelons were expertly cut bythe new faculty members. Students, in the hopes of receiving choice pieces, excitedly crowded near the two long tables which held the do- licious fruit. After everyone had eaten his fill, there was a moment of tension as everyone waitedl No one screamed for the police . . . . . so it must be all rightl Then it happenedl Several of the lucky students were seen carrying whole watermelons back to their dorms. Yes, our watermelon social was fun. Students engaged in various unusual activities such as seed-spitting contests. lnspite of the mosquitoes and chiggers, we all enioyed meeting new friends and the tantalizing melons. This was one of the first big welcomes we received at Haskell. Our year was definitely off to a good start. I 73 fs. .?'+ , tv 5 F tgp Juniors and Seniors Reception For several days, young Haskell men and women could be seen buying or borrowing last-minute accessories to complete their Sunday-best outfits which would be worn to the Junior-Senior Reception that was held in the Stidham Union, September 9, 1966. During the days preceding the reception, students could be heard talking excitedly about the coming event. Hasty introductions between guests and escorts were made throughout the week. Wise, gentle coaching was given by staff members and accepted by both Grade I3 and 'l4 stu- dents since the entire Haskell population wanted to make the evening a pleasure for all who attended. The night of the reception was an ideal summer evening, which cast an effervescent glow on everyone. The dress, man- ners, and character of each student and staff member was an impressive sight to behold. Refreshments of punch and assorted cookies which were served by candlelight on attractively, but simply-decorated table added a great deal to the evening activities. Each student will always remember this delightful opportunity to meet and to become acquainted with students and staff members. Comrade in Mourning, a tribute in grateful recognition of all Haskell men and women who participated in World War ll and solemn memory of those who made the supreme sacrifice, is located in the Haskell auditorium. A wreath is placed before the statue by members of the Indian Club and the military color guards as part of the tribute to the veterans. Mr. Haney Heads Veterans' Day Program Haskellites observed Veterans' Day with a special address given by Mr. William E. Haney during an assembly held on November ll, 1966. Mr. Haney's topic was on Americanism. The speech was a memorable one. Mr. Haney discussed the importance of respect, loyalty and pride in oneself, in one's country, and in one's fellowmen. Thanksgiving ln observance of the Thanksgiving Holidays, the Indian Club presented a special program. The story of the first Thanksgiving was highlighted with these special dances: the Harvest Dance, the Friend- ship Dance, and the Grass Dance. 1 75 Attendant Esther Naranio Attendant Barbara Freio ffyfi Queen Frances Mahkewa 76 Homecoming '66 The annual Homecoming events at Haskell Institute were scheduled for September 23 and 24. The festive events began with the Homecoming Dance, which was held in Tecumseh Hall. The Hall was gaily decorated with streamers of purple and gold. The highlight of the dance was the coronation of the queen. Members of the football squad selected Miss Frances Mahkewa, a iunior from Arizona to reign over the exciting activities. Chosen as Miss Mahkewa's lovely attendants were Miss Barham Freio, a Junior from Oklahoma, and Miss Esther Namnio, a iunior from Colorado. The reigning queen and her attendants were escorted to the dance by members of the team. On Saturday evening those attending the bonfire enjoyed the glow of the bright illiminous tire. This created a great feeling of ex- citement for our annual Homecoming game. Our boys fought all the way, and they deserve a tremendous amount of praise for their efforts. Homecoming week was surely filled with happiness and excitement. jimi' fs lx 9' Frances, Barbara, and Esther, pose while awaiting the final decision. I want you to be proud of and pass on to your children, pride in being an lndian. You can be 100 per cent American and still retain your Indian heritage. These tribal ways can mix and blend with the European cultures and broaden the scope of this country. You're not a dying race, but you are a dying culture. Try to pre- serve your Indian and tribal identity. You will not only become richer for it, but your country will be richer, for it also. Concluding his speech, spiced with humorous anecdotes, Rogers demonstrated several raping techniques, occasionally entongling himself in the process. His father, he said, was the greatest roper of his time and developed many roping techniques seen today. l 78 Nativity qt i Q ei i ' X, . . gg mg I gs. 5 EV f c X 5 iii, -if ,r K- EL? ii . is be i 2 gifs - 3 we .swf - Q sf , -W if F' V , -M si . if 1 2 it i ff S , V .. 2 if H f i 'Q 3 1 5 i 2 E e 5 1 , -14 f , 5 t 5 ig ? . Religious worship and instruction are on a vital but voluntary basis. This means that religious faith is so important that the right of the individual conscience is respected. Thus, each student is encouraged to attend the church of his choice each week. Students are urged by their sponsors to develop their religious faith while at Haskell, since many life-long skills are form- ed during these years.
