Each year the Quill and Scroll Society awards four white sweaters for outstanding scho - lastic achievement--one each in English, history, mathematics, and science. The rules for these awards are: 1. Any student of Haskell High School is eligible to compete for the sweaters if he has no less than 90 on his over-all average and on the subject in which he is competing. 2. Every eligible student will be given a standard test in the areas in which he is competing. 3. The test scores are then averaged with the student's class average. 4. These averages are ranked for each award. Winners of the Quill and Scroll Society awards last year were Barbara Rexrode, a Sophomore, in Scienceg Diane Montgomery, a Senior, in Englishg Tommy Coston, a Junior, in Historyg and Jimmy Vaughter, a Senior, in Mathematics. 3 Af Q 24 if 5 as 3 is E 543 :Q 5, .Sz Si 5 f is 5. Mrs. Weaver reviewed THE STREET OF THE LAUGHING CAMEL at the Owl Club Book Review. The richness and vitality of the English language reached a peak in the Elizabethan Era. Literature such as the beautiful King James' Bible and Christopher Mar1owe's poetry illustrated this. In learning the mechanics of English in school, we cover the relation of one word to another and study ways to express our thoughts effectively. Through the study of literature, we see that the English language is a tool in our hands, a tool which has the power to relate the past and to shape the future. Mrs. Hazel Weaver teaches English II, III, and IV in Haskell High. She sponsors the War Whoop and is co-sponsor of the Owl Club and the Quill and Scroll Society. Tlianh QQuvru iiiiss Eruh iliatliff fn The election of a Miss Front Page in Haskell High is comparatively new. The first Miss Front Page election was held in 1958, and was sponsored by the Haskell High School War Whoop Staff. The election is based on the number of subscriptions to the school newspaper bought by each class in Haskell High, A girl from each class is nominated to represent the class in the election, Either the Senior, Junior, or Sophorriore class, having bought the most subscriptions win for their representative the title, Miss Front Page. This year, the Senior Class, having bought the largest number of subscriptions won for their representative, Miss Danna Smith, the title, Miss Front Page of 1960. Miss Smith is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith. In H.H.S. , she holds the office of Secretary for the F, T,A, Danna is both a first chair flute player and a majorette for the Haskell lndian Band. She is a member of the First Baptist Church where she acts as pianist for the Young People's Class. The Haskell Indian Band Concert was one of the most colorful events of the 1959-60 school year. The concert, which was held in the spring, was the setting for the crown- ing of the Haskell Indian Band Queen. Annually, the Indian Band elects either a Junior or a Senior girl to hold this honored position. In electing the Band Queen, the band considers such qualities as: having a pleasing personality, being an active member in the band, and showing leadership qualities. This year Miss Leah Ratliff, a Senior in Haskell High, was elected by popular vote of the Haskell Indian Band to be honored with the title of Band Queen. Miss Ratliff is the daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Bill Rat- liff. She harplayed the Hute in the band for four years: two of which she was a majorette. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, President of the Future Teachers of America and a officer in the Future Homemakers of America.
