We were those little Freshmen, and oh, how we despised that name! After entering Mr. Monprode's room for Mrs. Mohair's and coming to class shy a book fit al- ways happensi, we started to get acquainted with the whys and wherefores of high school life. lGee, those Seniors don't bite after all!! We started to prove our questioned worth by electing our class officers. They were: John Lincoln as president, Paul Uster as vice-president, Audrey Bickhardt as treasurer, and Godfrey James as secretary. Well, now we were somebody! lt seemed safest though to keep our opinion to ourselves. 'Vacation'! No, not that one. This is just temporary and for a desired few. It seems Measles decided to favor our school about this time. We complained and diagnosed, and by the end of each day someone else went home with visions of a blaring sign on the front door! Well, what do you know! We welcomed Mr. Herring and with him came pleasant thoughts of a H.H.H.S. Band! The band in the first stages was very sad. We've learned to eat our words since then, though. iWe certainly can't be the ones who referred to it as the One Tune Band , can we?l Now, we did feel good! One of our class was elected a cheerleader to remain so for four years. Jean Norris was the one, and were we proud of her! My! Warm weather came around fast. We loved it, though, and not without good reason, for it brought with it our class picnic. Gaily, the Freshman year went fast! Not that we minded losing the title, but we did get a lot of publicity! We began to believe that our teachers really meant it when they said we were the noisiest class yet, especially so when the opening of school was detained 'till the l8th of September! iWe must have been a terrible strain on their nerves!! We later learned, however, that we were not to blame for the delay in the school's opening. il guess that showed us!! Seriously though, it was something very important and grave that was responsible. infantile Paralysis seemed to be making the rounds and precaution was on every doorstep. Mr. Noonan took our class over to see Mer- chant of Venice at Drew University, and we were all pleasantly surprised. l'm afraid we expected to merely enjoy the bus-ride, but were we fooled! The play and cast were excellent! Remember Bas- sanio, girls? Mr. Mac Mullen left our school this year, leaving a very noticeable gap in the school faculty. His track teams helped put Hasbrouck Heights on the map, and we all missed him. Three cheers went to our band! We started to see them at the games and were we proud, or were we! Why, they were great! Well, the battle was on! You wouldn't think there were so many ring designs from which to choose, and each person wanting a different one. iWasn't it lucky we weren't deciding on a hat?J We managed to agree, however, and then voted for color. Red won, but was quickly defeated when the government relayed that red just couldn't be had. lThat settled that!! We ended up with black onyx. Cheerleaders were chosen again and two of our sophomore class made it! They were Mary Ellen Murphy and Eileen Wagner. How glad we were for them! Well, that finishes our sophomore year, a year with a maximum of conceitedness and buoy- ancy that just naturally comes to Sophs. Oh, what a nice sound that word, Juniors, has to it! We were upper-classmen and don't think we didn't act it! Now we knew what prompts upper-classmen to act that way. We started this year off with a bang and elected our class officers. The votes were counted and the results were as follows: president, Betty Broadhurst, her helper, Jean Norris, secretary, Roberta Berridgep and treasurer, Paul Uster. This year was one for both sadness and cele- bration for we lost two excellent, top-rate teachers to their Uncle , and we got two other fine teachers in their places. Mr. Svedo left us to be- come Lieutenant ljgl Sveda, and Mr. Monprode became Pvt, Monprode. Mr, Sheridan and Miss Nagy were accepted with open arms to fill their places, and they proved their worth. Another valuable asset added to our school was Dr, Wilson, the Guidance Teacher. She was a great help to oh so many of us, and it's hard to believe past graduates got along without her valu- able aid. Five of our numbers were taken into the Honor Society, and it was just a cause for a very impressive and beautiful assembly, with candle- light and such. We had a proud father in our faculty this year, Mr. Kmetz.-And homework assignments were temporarily forgotten. l?l Well, weren't we the lucky ones! Barbara Kammer won, for the further fame of H.H.H.S., the public speaking contest with her memorable speech, Remember rehearsals, Miss Gertcher? Audrey Bickhardt and Jacquelyn Wolff were bubbling-over one l?l day this year, and not without good reason, either. Yes, they were the newest additions to the cheerleading squad. Woo, Woo! Remember our procession at the Senior Grad- uation? We wore pastel-colored gowns and felt so glamorous! We wondered why some cried after they were given their diplomas, We wondered how we would feel when we were up there and leaving school for good . l?l Which reminded us, we had but one year of high school ahead of us after this vacation! We came back this year Seniors, but minus many of our boys who had entered the service of their country. Golly, but we were proud of you fellows! Our school had certainly taken on a new perspective this year, both in building and in faculty. Greeting us were brand new, cement steps an the left bank of the lawn. Golly, did they look beautiful! Once inside the building we discovered our principal, Mr. MacDonald, had left and we had four vice-principals! lWhat a gruesome thought to place before already shuddering Freshmenll It really worked out grand, though, relieving much tension and skepticism in the student body, In addition, we had the following new teachers: Mr. Dotson, Miss Meade, Miss Harden- burgh, Mrs. Kortum lwelcome backl, Mr, Mills, Miss Montagne, and Miss Hamilton. Tri-Y members were inducted sans initiation! lWonders will never ceasell Our Yearbook got underway with o very cap- able staff and we hoped for the best. We presented Birthday of a King, our Christmas Pageant, and we were told it was a great success. Orchids to Mrs. Brown! Remember our Senior Play? Roberta Berridge, the lead, was stricken with appendicitis three days before the performance night, and Dot Singleton took over and turned out a magnificent perform- ance. Hooray for both of you and the rest of the cast, too. 'Bout here Miss Nagy decided to change her name to Mrs. Marta. Congratulations were all hers! Everybody these days was walking around like physical wrecks, but that was plain irony be- cause we were really being built-up via the com- mando course! Class Night! And it was all it was built-up to be! We howled every minute af it and tried not to think we'd soon be leaving it all. Then, someone was giving us our diplomas, and speeches were being made and people were applauding and we were being congratulated! One by one, great birds are rising. Bearing death within their jaws. Higher, higher, mounting skyward, Eagles fighting for a cause. Soon they near the mighty target, Bomb-bays open, terror reigns. Wheeling quickly, planes turn homeward, Leaving smoking, black remains. -DOROTHY COYLE. 0 REFLECTIONS ON SHOES Shiny black leather pump, what, broad foot have you squeezed? A cool pseudo-sophisticate's achingly large Or a warm-hearted matron's whose soft toes are pleased? By her shapeless and worn flannel slippers, alone? Baby shoe of soft kid, to what foot do you cling? Do you strengthen the steps of the rich or the poor? Have you caused doting hearts to be gay and to sing Or have you made souls desolate happy again? Splitting out at the seams, dusty Ia-borer's shoes, Have you made cutting pebbles seem little less sharp? Do you cring and hide low through some half- hearted ruse, All the time knowing yours is the highest respect? -JANEL MATSON. THE PICTURE There is a picture which hangs on my wall, lt's a scene of a farm in the fall. The road is muddy, the gate is worn, The fence is unpainted, the ground is forlorn. The sky is quite cloudy, the brook looks so grey, I wonder what inspired the artist that day. And yet with its pallor of gloom hanging o'er I'm sure that inside l'd find something more. Perhaps an old couple at rest by a fire Or some rare antiques to behold and admire, Often I think of the things I would give, To just walk into that frame to live, -CONSTANCE SCHAFFNER. 0 WINTER The North winds blow across the land And sweep the summer's warmth away, No glare from sunlight lingers now For darkness takes the place of day. The trees have shed their dress of leaves, Alone they stand, so cold and bare, And flowers withered from the strain Have lost their beauty, fine and rare. All nature seems to fade away, No fair enchantment can be found, But such a time occurskjust once- When winter weather comes around. -MARY ELLEN MURPHY. WISHFUL DREAMING I've often had the yearn to travel, On foreign soil to freely roam, To journey miles across the ocean, To see the sights, afar from home. I would not miss a single item, The seven wonders I would see, The ancient marvels of old Egypt, Would be no more unknown to me. To all strange cities, I would wander, And I'cI explore each tiny nook, But since this all is wishful dreaming, l'll be content with a travel book. -DOROTHY CLARK O THE EDEN OF CANADA Canada, Canada, boundless and free, Home of the maple, and river, and lea, Myriad lakes are the pearls of your crown, Mountains majestic, of purple and brown. Snow-covered tundra do border your realm, Maritime sea-farers guard at the helm. Minerals and fuel-oil are free from tihy store. Coal-fields keep frost and defeat from thy door, Habitant, English, your offspring are one. Now all are working for victory to come. Canada, Canada, of thee we sing. Praises and pride for thee ever shall sing. -RUTH EGERTON. STORM The tranquility of the night's silent splendor Is broken upon a low rumbling thunder, The sky touched with flames of God's pointing finger Is washed by the blood of the clouds as they linger The breath of the Gods, full of terror and fear Does rush through the woodland as fast as the deer Twisting and breaking the rain-beaten branches, Proud of his conquest, the wind fiercely prances. -RICHARD IRWN. O HIS WILL BE DONE They're spread o'er all the world right now, On land and foaming seag The deeds they do we know not how, They fight for liberty. What is there in a flag unfurled That stirs men's blood to fury? What sends them tramping o'er the world To be dictators' jury? What sends boys from a humble home Out there to fight and kill? Who is it sends them out to roam? It is their Father's will. -DOROTHY Sl NGL ETON. J. That's to win all ot the victories In the class-room or the track, And be loyal sons and daughters Of the Orange and the Black. When we leave our high school class rooms Never more there to return Still our memory never leaves us Ot the place wherein we learned, And our eyes grow bright with gladness I As we turn our memories back And recall those days of joy beneath The Orange and the Black. 59 FOOTBALL OACH ANDY KMETZ looked cheerfully into the future with five lettermen returning from last year s team Although the squad was rather light it proved aggressive by pouncing on the opposition B to wind up in second place in the Bergen County Scholastic League fS The team started slowly by losing first to Wood Ridge 6 3 and on the following Satur l day to Dumont 7 O An improvement was shown when the Heights beat Park Ridge 8 7 and Westwood, I8-6. Lodi, always a hard opponent managed to overcome us I4-6. On the following Saturday in the rain and mud soaked field a perfectly executed pass from Baumann to Zorilla helped us to score a 6-O victory over Hawthorne. A surprise to all was our lass by one point to the favored North Arlington team. Here we reached our peak performance. Completely outplaying them for three quarters a tired but spirited squad lost out in the waning minutes, i3-l2. Harrison proved to be weak, and Heights overcame them by 26-O. This gave Coach Kmetz a chance to experiment with his material for the coming year. The classic Thanksgiving Day game was a thriller all the way nip and tuck . A blocked kick by Eugene Dinallo rolled out of the end zone for a safety and two points, which was all we needed to be victorious over Wood-Ridge, our old rival, With Dan Beaudette, Ralph Baumann, and Godfrey James in the backfield and Art Chandless, Pete Wisse, Pete Zorilla, Paul Uster and Frank Ranuska, who did noble service in the line, the team finished with a record of five won and four lost. 52 DAVID A. OACH ANDY KMETZ started the season with an in- experienced squod, Don Beaudette and Ralph Bau- mann were the only returning veterans from lost yeor's team. As the season progressed, Coach Kmetz experimented with mony combinations to find a smooth working five. However, due to the lack of experience among the sen- iors, Coach Kmetz began to concentrate on the lower classmen. The result was obvious, the season's record was: 3 wins ond l4 losses. Sickness and injuries to sev- erol key men olso contributed to the poor record. Despite this showing our morale was good, a fine trib- ute to our basketball players. ln defeat os well as in victory the team at all times displayed o fine spirit of loyalty and sportsmanship. Although some of the players are in new positions, the team is comparatively seasoned, Because of the trans- portation problem last year the team played independently, but this year they were reinstated in the Bergen County Scholastic League and have high hopes of finishing near the top. Dick Masch and Mike Grimes are expected to do most of the pitching, with Wally Lowensten, a freshman, an outside choice. Ralph Baumann will be on the other end of their slants with Bob Woodruff as an alternate. Dave Jones will be at first, Don Beaudette on second, Charlie Pfeiffer on thirdand either Pete Zorilla or Ray Koch at short, Don Frued, Bob Jones and Howie Mitchell are the outfield choices with Warren Lawrence in reserve. Coach Depken worked hard this spring and the squad is rapidly rounding into form. The squad faces a stiff test with Ridgewood and St. Peter's Prep. added as dual meets to last year's schedule. Vito Putignano' and Bob Haltenhoff will lead the sprinters while God- frey James, the only letterman returning from last year's team, and Ivan Martin will run the quarter mile. The half-mile is still wide open with Ted Todt, Paul Uster, Alfred Stone and Arthur Bickhardt still in the running.
