SDPHIJIIIDBE BLESS FBESHIUHI1 BLESS I 5 n E e W i I W w l w I i K , , 1 5 5 w HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF l94l ELL, here we are, Freshmen. lGreenhorns, the seniors saidll At our first class meeting, that great orator, Gene Kuhn, was elected presi- dent, with Harold Schneier as vice-president, Nookie McCullough as sec- retary, and Charlie Meyer, treasurer. lAHEMll Getting more and more ambitious each day, we sponsored a cake sale and added to our funds. Came the magazine sales, and there was Miss Gertcher's homeroom at the top of the list with an ice cream party for all their efforts. January brought rumors of those horrid things called exams-and horrid they wereg we were petrified! I Among our classmen who participated in sports, and amazed the upper- classmen, were Neil Henches, Anthony Dinallo and Harold Schneier. Following the usual custom, we had a class picnic, and went to Shadow Lake . . . Claire Wolf was rescued by Harold, and Harold and Claire were saved by AI Puth . . . Remember? Surprised at how much we hadgrown during the summer, we settled down to elect our officers. Alma Horton was chosen to lead us through our gallant struggle this year. Assisting her were Marion Lang, vice-president, Nookie as secretary, and Marion Blocher, treasurer. Something new and different this year were the W. P. A. dances every other week. We learned the Big Apple, l-ambeth Walk, and of course, the dear old fox trot. Our treasury needed a boost, and with the permission of all concerned, we planned a dance. Things began to happen, and we found ourself sans orchestra. The result? We had an afternoon tea dance, charged l5 cents admission and with the help of recordings, made an increase in our treas- ury, and fooled the whole school, because they thought we wouldn't have a dance because of the mix-up with the contract, orchestra, etc. Before we knew it, we had come around to June, moon, spoon, and, oh yes, picnics. We went to Shadow Lake again, but there was no rescue party this time. 151 :gi gi 5: tg: Ah-the very essence of the brisk September days brought the word school to our minds. We were glad to get back after a long summer vaca- tion, nevertheless, leaving behind us the summer romances, fun, and all the rest of such things. Realizing that we had better get down to work in a hurry, we elected our officers: Phil Sawyer was elected president, Bob Riley, vice-president, Dorothy Cole, secretary, and Neil Henches, treasurer. There were numerous changes in the faculty, Mr. McNiel and Mr. Ward were among the missing and in their places were Miss Cole and Mr. Knipple. as Money-making was our business, so off we went to the football games, armed with hot dogs, soda, and apple turnovers. This put quite a bit of money into our treasury. Speaking of football, we must not forget to mention the stars from our class-Neil, Walter, Anthony, Herbert Hauck, and Wacky McCabe. ' In order to keep the pranking students off the streets, a dance was held at our gymnasium on Halloween night. The entire plan was successful. Days flew by, each one bringing a new, different and exciting event- for we were Juniors, and included in a great many activities. November I8 was a great day for us . . . our first REAL dance, with an orchestra and vocalist. We introduced Bunny Charles to 'Hasbrouck Heights. Do you remember the cider? The grammar school students had nothing on us this year-we had Christmas parties, too. Quite unusual for a high school, but we did have fun, and no harm done. Our class rings arrived sometime after Christmas, but they were gra- ciously accepted even at a late date. Every one who saw them peeled forth with oh's and ah's. I want to say here, that a little bug was flying around good old H. H. H. S., biting quite a few students-his name? no, not yehudi, but appendix. On February I we were shocked by the news that Bernard Kriens was severely burned in a fire. To make his days seem shorter, iwe sent him a radio for his room. Meanwhile, the Honor Society held its induction, and six members of our class were chosen-Bernard Kriens was one of the six. The Starlight Swing was our next dance, with Bill Weber providing the music. The gallant struggle for life was ended on April I4, when Bernard Kriens left us. A large representative group of students went to the church service to pay final tribute to one who will be remembered forever. As is the custom each year, the Junior class took over the newspaper. We, being different, renamed the Flash to High-Lite and although our first issue was saddened by our loss, it was a real success. Public Speaking contests were held, and in the final contest the Juniors captured the first and second prizes. Junior picnic means Bertrand's Island, and Bertrand's Island means fun with a capital F. . . and did we have fun!! Slowly, June crept up upon us, and before we realized it, Senior Grad- uation was the next and last event. The gorgeous Junior girls in the proces- sion were the glamour-girls for the evening. With a sad adieu to our senior friends, we watched them part to go out to do their work in the world. At last! We had worked three hard l?I years for this, and now-now we were Seniors! What a thrill! And to think we were more important than the rest of the kids -all I can say is My my. 37 Everything seemed different-ewhy, there were two new members of the taculty-Miss Thompson and Mr. Noonon. And, don't forget Miss Rosso in the office. Class officers, elected at one of our meetings, werei Philip Sawyer, president, Alma Horton, Vice-President, Dorothy Cole, Secretary, and Rose- marie Mullins, Treasurer. One of the first activities was the Tri-Y initiation-gosh did the girls look silly with their hair tied up in rages. Football brought us around to selling hot dogs, candy, soda pop and apple turnovers, and, as usual, the same few faithful missed most of the game to provide eats for the rest of the mob. Our first dance was the Football Frolic, and what a frolic that punch wasl Yearbook work is the ONE important item of the year, and the staff was chosen and immediately began work. Public Speaking contests were held early this year, and a senior walked otf with first prize. The l-ligh-Lite experienced more difficulties than any newspaper ever had. That mimeograph machine! Why did it have to break in the middle of almost every issue. And why did it finally break so it couldn't be fixed. lWe were without a machine for the good part of the yearl. Lights-camera-action-memories. The Christmas pageant-how could we forget is? Learning everything in less time than believed possible, it went over with a bang. lJust ask any of the fellows how they enjoyed walk- ing up to the stage in their bare feetl. Congratulations went to Mr. Whit- comb and Mrs. Brown. Oh yes, how could l forget-the popularity contest. Amazing, isn't it, how many friends you have until you get what they wanted! Days of planning, persuasion, and hard-work resulted in one grand Stu- dents' Day. To start the day right, the yearbook staff gave a short assembly program, which, by the way, was the funniest of the year. Senior play cast was chosen after much ado about a play. Meanwhile, Easter came around, and no vacation! That certainly burn- ed us up. ' Most of the measles students were back, and we proceeded as usual. The roads became more hazardous each day, as more of the seniors be- came of age and got their licenses. Time passed swiftly, and Fly Away Home was our next big event. A good play, a good cast, and a big success. Exams for seniors were early--the last exams for many of us. Baccalaureate Services were held and we realized this was the beginning of the end. The end came on June 23, and after four years of fun, we were sorry to leave good old l-l. H. l-l. S. It wasn't such a bad place after all. With sad aut wieder sehen's we parted, anxiously looking ahead to our fu- ture work, but just a wee bit saddened at the thought of the breaking up of the Class of l94l. BII Ruland and George Spae, both members of the Class of 1941, requested that the reunion be held at their Rondevay and the entire evening was on the house. ,Woody Dunham's newly organized orchestra pro- vided the music, and Rosemarie Mullins sang a few se- lections. ...o..iT Journalist Arrives Home Miss Betty Riley, traveling journalist, arrived from England today on the America. Miss Riley's secretary and former classmate, Miss Doris Welliver, also accompanied her. .i,o Government Bookkeeper Finds Records Fixed Miss Mildred Blaine, one of the official bookkeepers of the United States Treasury Departmant, disclosed startling evidence in the Schneier vs. Parodi case. It seems that Schneier, in an effort to save money, did his own bookkeeping, and either on purpose, or be- cause of his lack of knowledge on the subject, Schneier himself had his books fixed. Because of this, a sixty thousand dollar debt is seen. MIRACLE OPERATION PERFORMED Fifth Avenue Doctor Says- I was glad to do it. June 22, l95l, New York City. A seemingly impossible operation was successfully performed yesterday at the Kriens Memorial Hospital. Dr. Robert Gamble, who has his private practice on Fifth Avenue consented to operate on 3-year-old Knute Henches, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Henches of Hasbrouck Heights, only because of his friendship with the child's parents. This line of surgery is out of his usual line of work. The object of the operation was to remove the child's appendix which through some oddity, was just below his heart. The child had been suffering with in- tense pains in this region for over a year. Many spe- cialists were consulted, but none even suspected the trouble was caused by misplaced appendix. In fact, Mrs. Henches, the former Miss June Broadhurst, and her son Knute, accompanied by the other children, Neil, Jr., and Marion, returned from Cape Cod last week. The trip was prescribed by one of the nu- merous doctors. Finally, the frantic parents summoned Dr. Gamble, an old friend, and he correctly diagnosed the case. Dr. Gamble said very little when interview. His only words were, l was glad to do it for June and Nei. Miss Janet Lawrence was the special nurse on the case. - .,O Journalism Award Announced The annual award given for outstanding work in journalism during the year it was announced today, goes to Miss Joan Hlacha. Miss Hlacha, unlike other jour- nalists, wrote for not one, but four newspapers, and two magazines. So valuable are her writings, that Miss Hlacha is forced to copywrite all her articles and stories. Her style is not only unique in its form, but varies so, it is hard to believe so many types of work are written by one per- son. This is the third award Miss Hlacha has earned by her work. This award is sponsored by the editor of the High-Lite. PAGE2 H IIGH L IT E APRIL 26, i951 H I G H - L I T E AN ALUMNI PUBLICATION Editor-in-Chief .,............................,...,.,..,.... Still we always cling to Hasbrouck And we know there's but one route. That's to win all of the victories ln the class-room or the track And be true sons and daughters Ot the Orange and the Black. When we leave our high school class rooms Never more there to return, Still our memory never leaves us Of the place wherein we learned, And our eyes grow bright with glaclness As we turn our memories back And recall those days of joy beneath The Orange and the Black. 62 3 3 i 4 w x. Besides these two, other first team members include, Ken and Don Walter, Dan Murray, AI Grady, Paul Ludwig, John Campo and Jim Mason. CHAMPIONSHIP 69 l I NEW sport, Archery, was included in the athletic schedule of our school this year. Appreciation of the new equipment was in evidence by the tremendous turnout of nearly every girl. Interesting contests were held after school and the first-rate competition was as keen as could be provided by any group. From the preview shown us during the first season of archery, we are all looking forward to another fine season next year. BASKETBALL has al- ways been a great favorite of the Franklin High School -girls. This fact was verified by the well fought games be- tween the four groups. Each squad represents the finest players from each class. SOPHOMORES Although every team played fine ball to the end of the season, the Junior team showed its skill by coming out on top with three wins and no losses.
