Harwood G1rls School About 1880 Rev Thomas Harwood and h1s w1fe came to work among the Span1sh speakmg res1dents of New Mexxco He f1r st founded a school for both boys and g1rls but fmdxng xt d1ff1cult w1th meager equlpment to have boys and g1rls together he asked the Woman's Home M1ss1onary Soc1ety to take over the work w1th the g1rls Th1s they wxllmgly d1d and 1n the same year establ1shed Harwood G1rls School on North Arno Street The f1rst permanent bu1ld1ng for the school was bu1lt 1n 1896 on Fru1t and 14th Streets to lt more rooms were added 1n 1906 In 1925 a lot was purchased on North Seventh Street by the Woman's Home M1ss1onary Soc1ety a f1ne fxreproof two story bu1ld1ng accommodatmg some 94 g1rls and eleven staff members was erected 1n the form of a wlde H, w1th the dmmg room k1tchen and two dorm 1tor1es occupy1ng the south w1ng and classrooms and two dorm1tor1es 1n the north w1ng off1ces parlors guest rooms and small bedrooms for three g1rls each were located 1n the connect1ng space The chapel playrooms storage space laundry p1ano pract1ce rooms and art stud1o are 1n the basement About ten years later Hudd Hall was erected at the rear of the lot th1s 15 now used for the sewmg classes, the mus1c stud1o and staff meetmgs In 1940 the bu1ld1ng was enlarged by a two story annex w1th rooms for members of the staff and a wmg wh1ch has the lxbrary and four classrooms Our campus 1S beaut1ful w1th many trees and seasonal flowers we g1rls enjoy many a chat on the grass at noon or after classes In one corner 15 a large play ground w1th see saws swmgs an outdoor gr1ll and concrete benches and tables just r1ght for a p1cn1c supper campfxre or tw1l1ght s1ng Th1s year there are about 160 of us and we come from all over th1s state and nexghbormg ones We are all s1zes from tmy f1rst graders to h1gh school sen1ors We are truly an 1nterrac1al fam1ly for some are of Anglo or Airman ancestry others are from Ind1an tr1bes many speak Spanxsh at home and several are from Old Mex1co but there 1S very l1ttle dgfference among us Just as 1n a fam1ly ue b1g g1rls help the l1ttle ones w1th manners or scold them, wash the1r faces and pra1se the1r sk1ts and programs We all f1nd plenty to f1ll the day Our Student Counc1l has representatwes from each grade they plan good tlmes for us and suggest better rules and good c1t1zen sh1p Every g1rl belongs to a club where she develops xnterest 1n some hobby and learns to be cons1derate of the r1ghts of others Our glee club and chorus programs and the plays offered by the varxous classes are hxgh l1ghts 1n the school year Every g1rl who l1ves at Harwood helps w1th the housekeepmg and coolung The respons1b1l1ty for each g1rl 1S changed every n1ne weeks and even the youngest learn how to dust properly All of us are studymg the Greatest Book mn the World m our chapel we have helpful messages every school morn1ng and Sunday evenlngs Sunday morn1ngs we attend servmces 1n downtown churches The exghth grade g1rls have g1ven a program on George Washmgton Carver the f1fth and s1xth grades gave a demonstratxon on Chr1st1an character1st1cs and 1n December the I-hgh School g1rls gave a Chr1stmas pageant All have taken part ln the Whlte G1ft Chr1stmas We greatly apprec1ate the keen xnterest of the Woman's Soc1ety of Chr1st1an Serv1ce of our Methodxst churches throughout the year and espec1ally at Chr1stmas t1me 1 ' . 1 1 1 I ' 1 , .
