GUTHRIE nllquulu W Commander GUTHRIE was born in Punta Gorda, Florida and graduated from Charlotte High School in 1944. He entered the U. S. Naval Academy in 1945. Upon graduation in 1949, he was assigned to USS CO- LUMBUS CCA-74j as the assistant Navigation Oliicer. I Between 1952 and 1954, he served in USS S. B. ROBERTS fDD-823D as the Gunnery Officer, and in Febru- ar 1954 was ' d ' A y assigne as the Commanding Oliicer of the USS PC 572. In 1955 he commenced a two year tour of duty ashore as an instructor at the Fleet Air Defence Training Center, Dam Neck, Virginia. Starting in 1957, he served two years on the Staff of Commander, Destroyer Flotilla Four as the Flag Secretary. His next duty was under instruction in 1959 at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. Upon completion of instruction, he stayed on at the Naval War College for a two ear t f d t h y our o u y on t e staff. Returning to sea in 1962, he was ordered to USS VESOLE CDDR-8782 as Executive Oflicer. Later, he served on the Staff of Commander A h'b' F ' ' ' ' , mp 1 1ous orce, U. S. Atlantic Fleet in the Operations and Plans Section. At his next duty, he was assigned to the Headquarters, U. S. Military Assistance, Vietnam, where he served in the Plans Division from 1965 until assuming command of the USS HARWOOD CDD-8611 on 17 November 1966. While on duty at sea at Yankee Station, Tonkin Gulf, Commander GUTHRIE was relieved by Commander C. D. Hopkins as Commanding Officer of HARWOOD. Commander GUTHRIE was transferred to the USS AMERICA by helicopter, bound for duty with the Joint Stalf in Washin ton D. C. S , Commander GUTHRIE IS married to the former Elizabeth Ann Haller of Garden City, New York. They have five children, a son, Mitchell, and four daughters, Melinda, Susan, Kimberly, and Caroline. Officer Commander C. D. HOPKINS Commander HOPKINS is a veteran of World War II, the Korean'War and the Vietnam Conflict. After enlisted service during World War II, he entered the Naval Academy in 1946 and graduated in June of 1950. His first duty was aboard USS DES MOINES CCA-134j in the gunnery department. From 1952 to 1954 he served as Executive Oiiicer of USS FIRECREST CAMS-101, during which time his ship received the Korean Presidential Unit Citation for her mine sweeping operations during the Korean Conflict. The next three years were spent as Chief Staff Officer for Com- mander Mine Squadron II, followed by a two year. tour in Germany with the Field Training Group, MAAG, as an advisor on mine warfare and harbor defense. His first taste of destroyer duty came in 1959-1960, when he served as Operations Officer aboard USS PUTNAM CDD-7571. From 1960 to 1962 he was attached to the Staff COMCRUDES- LANTXCOMCRUDIV SIX as Aide and Flag Secretary, then spent a year as a student at the Naval War College. In July 1963, Commander HOPKINS became the Executive Officer of USS VOGELGESANG CDD-8621, where he attained his present rank, before serving a one year tour on the Staff of the U. S. Military Assistance Command in Vietnam. He reported to HARWOOD fresh from duty in Washington, D. C. where he served in the Strategic Plans Division, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. ' Commander HOPKINS is married to the former Miss Ursula 'Bennarendt of Bremerhaven, Germany, and has two daughters, Janine, 5, and Jacqueline, 2. Zommand On 29 September 1968 Commander HOPKINS relieved Com mander GUTHRIE as Commanding Officer of HARWOOD. At this time HARWOOD was on station in Tonkm Gulf, plane Hhalzge of guarding the USS AMERICA CCVA-661. The ceremony took place on the mess decks as the topsides were constantly deluged by spray. The crew assembled and witnessed the reading of orders and the traditional, I relieve you, Sir. Immediately following, Com- mander GUTHRIE was transferred to the USS AMERICA by helicopter. A United States military spokesman said the shell landed near the Harwood's rear five-inch gun and wounded two crewmen. He reported only minor damage to the ship.
