Throughout, there existed a spirit of comradery that allowed for the tedious hours of gathering information, photographing, organizing, typing, and proofreading for our final product. We were able to meet every deadline well ahead of time by working during school, after school, and one night a week. Finally, we would like to thank everyone who graciously gave their time and support and especially to E.R. Lilley and Mr. O’Leary for their patience and expertise in organizing the memories of the Class of 1985. Boys Track The 1984 Track record was 5-5. The team’s performance was over¬ shadowed by personal efforts. The great hope is that this year’s seniors, Brad Desmarais, Marc Michaud, Troy Johnson, Scott Anderson, Bill Doherty, Phil Burnham, and Terry Carr will lead the team to a victorious season. Front Row: Jim Porter, Jon Comeau, Scott Ritz, Bob Campbell, Dave Dodson, Chris Trocchi, Troy Johnson, Bill Doherty, Rich Rubino, Keith Croteau, Dave Doherty. Second Row: Dan O’Leary, Troy Johnson, Glenn Ritz, Eric Caldwell, Matt Welsh, Sam McCormack, Greg Johnson, Scott Baker, Sean O’Brien, Tom Danahy, Brad Desmarais, Pat Welch, Marc Michaud, Mike Michaud, Don Bates Boys’ Track Section Sponsored By Dan O’Leary Complete Lawn Care Girl’s Track The girl’s track team, last spring, showed outstanding talent and effort as they faced several older and more experienced opponents. Although the team as a whole did not do extremely well, several members stood out because of individual talents. Mary Hannigan, Laurette Jussila, and Mary Larivee were among some of the best female runners in the Cape and Island’s league. With nearly the entire team returning this year, Coach Burns is hoping the girls well have a much improved season in 1985. BOTTOM L-R Lisette Caminaro, Lisa Coleman, Joanne Ballam, Lisa Foley, Kim Johnson, Nancy Allen, Tara Shaffer, Janee Santacroce, Karen Warren, Mary Hannigan, Joanne Falla, Darcy Dubreuil, Allison Jussila, Michelle Roderick, Julie Foster TOP Coach Skip Burns, Sally Holmes, Kate Dodson, Mary Larivee, Laurette Jussila, Pam Brackett, Patty Noyes, Erin Germaine, Bridget O’Brien, Kim Robbins, Amy Anderson, Jackie Falla, Dawn Dudevoire, Wendy Farris, Coach Dr. Drew 62 Girl’s Track Section Sponsored By S L Tree Service 432-5919 Baseball The boys baseball team, last spring, enjoyed a tremendous season under the leadership of Coach Charles Horan. Although the team was without some key players because of missed tryouts the Rough Riders went on to compete strongly for the Cape and Islands Championship. Hurlers Tom Fredericks, John Jaworski, Jon Hemeon, and Pugga Routhier dominated the pitching staff while Chris Render and Neil Gomes filled the position behind the plate. In the infield were players like Walter Craig, Steven Howard, and Scott Vangelder who played a large role defensively as well as offensively. The Rough Riders were a dominant force throughout the entire season but unfortunately bowed to the team from Hull High School in the tournament. Coach Horan looks for another outstanding season in 1985. 64 Baseball Section Sponsored By Handlers Auto Parts Inc. 65 GIRLS’ SOFTBALL The girls’ varsity softball team had another impressive season during this past spring, finishing third in the Cape and Islands League. The girls boasted a season record of 11-4 proving them eligible to enter into the MIA school softball tournament for the eleventh year in a row. The teams offensive was lead by MVP, Letty Rose, who pitched for ten wins and had a season batting average of .617, while other contributing and outstanding members of the team were: Lisa Dery, Pat Dunne, and Dawn Texeria. Although the team suffered severe loses to graduation, Coach Cheryl Poore is confident the girls will uphold their championship reputation in the spring of 1985. Golf Once again the boys’ golf team captured the Cape Islands Cham¬ pionship. Coach Glenn Bryant was very impressed by the boy’s outstand¬ ing skills and efforts to succeed, which was evident by some very narrow wins. The team was successful because of the individual talent of each member on the team. Outstand¬ ing players were Todd Perry, John Simard, Dale Karras, Dennis Hoye, and Ken Cahoon. Coach Bryant is confident that this year’s team will uphold their outstanding record, but the loss of the team’s MVP, Ken Cahoon, could cause the team some difficulties. First Row: Todd Woolley, John Blute, Chris Ohman, Danny Faivre, Sean MacAskill, Steve Hanlon, Middle Row: Glenn Johnson, Brian Moore, Dennis Hoye, Deran Eaton, Warren Holmes, Scott Smith, Ken Cahoon, Top Row: Marc Prodgers, Nelson Pena, Jon Simard, Todd Perry, Dale Karras, Dave McKenna, Glenn Bryant, Coach. 68 69 Boys Soccer The boys soccer team had an outstanding season this year finishing with an overall record of 5-3-2. This year was also the first year in over eight years that the team made it into the tournament. Coach Thatcher was very impressed by the team’s hard work and devotion. This was Coach Thatcher’s first year coaching boys soccer but he immediate¬ ly took control and successful¬ ly shaped the team into a well skilled ball club. Much of the teams success can be attribut¬ ed to various individuals like, All-star Jon Small, Tim Doherty, Bill Doherty, Dean Damon, Phil Burnham, and Eric Johnson. Although the team will lose several members of the graduating class, Coach Thatcher is confident that next years squad will improve even more. Robert Henry, Eric Johnson, Peter Lendh, Dean Damon, Evan Sokale, Brad Cox, Scott VanGelder, Mike Schaffer, Jon Hemeon, John Jaworski, Bill Doherty, Tim Doherty, Jon Small, Brad Desmaris, Andy Smith, and Phillip Burnham. 70 71 Girls Soccer The girls soccer team had an outstanding season this past fall finishing in second to the girls of Nauset. The girls worked ex¬ tremely hard in preparation for the season which they had yet to begin and in the end it payed off for Coach Horan’s squad. The success of the team can be attributed mainly to the large number of experienced players and the effort which they put forth. Players like Lauren Toma- sian, Britt Elwell, Mia Hill, Chris Sylvester, Lisa Centio, and goal keeper, Karen Warren are why the team was able to produce a competitive reputation for them¬ selves. Although the team will suffer a substantial loss of players to graduation, Coach Horan is looking forward to an even better season in the spring of 1985. Girls Soccer: Top Row L to R; Mr. Horan, Coach, Bridget O’Brien, Melissa Tomasian, Julie Foster, Julie Cahill, Darci Dubrieul, Becky Nolan, Amy Anderson, Cathy Hadfield, Britt Elwell, Missy Centio, Debbie Gerstley, Bottom Row: Kim Nydah, Wendy Curtis, Chris Sylvester, Karen Warren, Lauren Tomasian, Mia Hill, Kelly Petrie, Lisa Centio, Mariah Ebbett, and Sharon Murphy. 72 73 Boys Cross-Country Team Cape Island Champions The boys cross country team enjoyed its best season ever, easily winning the Cape Islands championship and finishing fifth out of fourty-four in the Division IV State Meet. The team’s record was ten wins and no defeats including victories over non-league Division II opponents, Wareham and Bourne. Led by senior co-captains Marc Michaud and Troy Johnson, seniors David Dodson, Juniors, Glenn Ritz and Sam McCormack, sophomore Troy Dill and freshman, Wes Cushman, the Rough Riders dominated the league capturing the top five places in every meet. Most Valuable Player, Marc Michaud, won every race setting course records at Harwich and Chatham. Standing L to R: Amy Peninger, Cheryl Johnson, Patty Noyes, Lissette Caminero, and Mr. Don Bates, Coach. Top Row L to R: John Centeio, Glenn Ritz, Sam McCormack, Scott Ritz, Mr. Don Bates, Coach, Bottom Row: Jon Comeau, Troy Johnson, Marc Michaud, and Wes Cushman Girls Cross-Country Team With many returning athletes, both cross-country teams are looking forward to continuing their tradition of success next fall. The girls also had their best season compiling an undefeated record in the Cape Islands League. Freshmen, Lissette Caminero, Amy Peninger, and Patty Noyes and 7th grader, Cheryl Johnson were the top runners, taking four of the top five places in the league meet. Lissette Caminero was the Most Valuable Player. She was first for the team in every meet and had the honor of joining Michaud, Johnson, Dodson, Ritz, McCormack and Dill as the only girl selected to the All-Star Team. They finished second in the Cape and Island’s league which qualified them to par¬ ticipate in post-season tour¬ nament play. Coach Poore’s team then went on successfully throughout the first two rounds of tournament action but were knocked out in the third round by a stronger team from Case High School. Unfortunately, next year, seniors Leslie Allen, Jennifer Santacroce, Linda Stephens, Mary Hannigan, Joanne Ballam, and Heather Currey will be gone but because of the teams depth, th eir positions should be filled quick¬ ly. Coach Poore and the team are satisfied with this years accomplishments but look for further success in the future. COMPLIMENTS OF MARCELINE’S SALVAGE AND TRUCKING JAMES MARCELINE-PROP. 143 “It is believed that Michael O’Neill Monahan’s great-great grandfather, Jeremiah introduced the Irish Claddagh Ring to America in 1815” The Legend of the Claddagh Over 400 years ago, in Ireland, there was a village called Claddagh. Its men were fishermen often sailing way out into the Atlantic. On a particular voyage the Moorish pirates captured a fishing vessel and took the crew to Africa and sold them as slaves. One of the crew, a young man who was to have been married, became a favorite of the Sultan, who had him taught the art of goldsmithing. The Sultan gave him permission to marry, but “He would hold his heart for the girl who would wait for him in the Claddagh village.” He fashioned a gold ring with a crown atop a heart held gently in two hands. The crown meant charity, the hands friendship and the heart love. He finally escaped and returned to Ireland where he married his true love and the ring he had made was her wedding ring. To this day, the Claddagh ring represents charity, friendship and love. The ring is now one of the most popular in the United States, worn by every ethnic group.
