The year saw some great individual accomplishment by Richard Dennis, Dicky Gonsalves, and Jay Filteau, but the team lacked the depth necessary for a truly successful year. The 1984 season will concentrate on building a strong Junior High and Underclassmen program to deal with the depth problem that has haunted Boys Track in Harwich. The Pheonix, as they were called, waited until the last three games to get their engines started for second year mentor Charlie “Gerbil” Horan. The height of the season was the dramatic 8-7 come from behind extra inning gem over Sandwich. Harwich had experience as seven of the starters were repeators from the 82 squad. The Rough Riders look forward to an even better 1984 season. With returning players Chris Render, David Doherty, Pat Hannigan, Tom Frederick, Ken Desmaris, Walter Craig and Ronny Simons, plus many outstanding J.V. players rising into varsity action, a Rough Rider baseball championship is highly regarded. The girls cruised to a nine and one season and were co-champs of the Cape and Islands. Undoubtedly they should have been sole champs because their only loss was a close one to Nauset, only because an essential member of the team was absent. Coach Burns had high praise for his team, which showed spirit compe- tiveness, and comaradery for the entire season. The standouts were captain Sue Solimini, the league champion in the long jump, Wendy Heap, league champ in the two mile, Mary Hannigan, league record holder in the eight hundred, also league MVP, Wendy Craig, Lorette Jussila, and Chris Sylvester were major point takers. It was no just the individual who helped the winning cause it was the team as a whole. And each member of that team drew accolades from their coach. During the tournament, however, Harwich steamrolled into the semi-finals and played super softball until they were defeated by a powerful CASE team. As the underdogs they defeated league champs Sandwich. In a thrilling game, they also beat a top-notch Bourne team, that expected to win it all. Michelle Thayer, again on the mound for Harwich pitched for them the whole season. With the following players returning — Joelle Lamontagne, Letty Rose, Dawn Teixera, Pat Dunne, Sue Hodgkins, Lyp Fernandes, and Karen Warren — for the 1984 season, all the Riderettes need is a pitcher to strive again for the championship Overall (14-5) s o c c e r Top: L-R Coach Rose, Phil Burnham, Bill Doherty, Mike Schaffer, Tim Doherty, Jon Small, John Jaworski, Eric Johnson, Jon Hemeon, James Nordstrom. The 1983 Soccer season was disappointing but had its rewards as well. With 13 returning lettermen hopes were high for a championship season. The Riders got off to a slow start losing 2 of their first 3 games and watch the title slip away, however, the playoffs were still in sight. The determination was there and the team started to see the fruit of hard work. Anchored by 4 year veteran Dave Doherty and Chris Render, and Junior goalie Tim Doherty, the defense was inpenatratable. The offense started rolling as Pat Hannigan was fining Home goal after goal. All four were Cape + Island All Stars, with the two Doherty and Hannigan were All Cape All Stars. The team won 6 of their next 7 games and now it was up to one game to determine who went to the playoffs. Harwich + Sandwich battled in front of a crowd of 500 people and when it was over, Sandwich emerged the victor but Harwich earned the respect of the crowd as they put on a scrappy, outstanding game. Coach Rose, in his last year coaching soccer was very pleased with the season, and the two shotout victories over Nauset and Sandwich were some of the happiest moments of his career. 1 r 1 c c e r Front row - Kim Chase, Jules Madison, Mia Hill, Karen Davis, Deb Gerstley, Becky Nolin Middle row - Chris Sylvester, Kin Healy, Melissa Tomasian, Lauren Tomasian, Aimee Blodgett, Jennifer Syles, Beth Sykes, Charles Horan. Back row - Bill Sigel, Goalie Coach, Teri Rintali, Kelly Peitri, Wendy Curtis, Britt Elwell, Lisa Centeio, Karen Warren, Sue Whitney, Sara, Brenda Diaz, Holly Leugers, Coach Thatcher. The 1983 season was a giant step in the right direction for the Harwich High School girls’ Varsity soccer team. The Rough Riderette set records for the most wins in a season, most goals scored in a season, and fewest goals allowed in a season. With only one starter graduating, senior Captain Karen Davis, the outlook for the 1984 campaign appears quite promising. Four girls were named to the first ever Cape and Island Girls All-Star Soccer Team. They were Karen Davis, Karin Warren, Sue Whitney, and Jennifer Sykes. Captain Karen Davis was awarded the Most Outstanding Player trophy honored her fine efforts as goalie and team leader. Top: L-R - Glen Ritz, Troy Hohnson, Marc Michaud, Sam McCormack, Tom Danahy, Coach Don Bates Bottom: L-R Scott Ritz, Troy Dill, David Dodson, Jon Comeau, Wes Cushman Top: Coach Don Bates, Mary McCormack, Lisa Coleman Bottom: Datherine Dodson, Lisette Caninero, Sally Holmes, Amy Peninger, Patty Noyes The Boys Cross Country Team enjoyed its best season finishing second in the Cape and Islands league with a six and two record. Among the highlights were the teams first two victories over Arch rivals Cape Tech. Individually, the RoughRiders were led by “All Stars” Marc M ichaud and David Dodson and the “Troy Boys” Troy Johnson and freshman sensation Troy Dill. Other promising perfor¬ mances were turned in by so¬ phomores, Jon Comeau, Glen Ritz, Sam McCormack and eighth grade student Wes Cushman. With the entire top eight runners returning the team is looking forward to even greater success in 1984. 74 The 1983 season marked the first time Harwich had enough run¬ ners to field a complete girls team, and the results were encouraging. Led by All Star Sally Holmes, the girls made tremen¬ dous progress, losing close meets to the much Cape Tech and Sandwich teams. Three first time runners Lissette Caminero, Lisa Coleman and Amy Penninger showed their improvement by finishing 1,2,3, in the Varsity League meet. Patty Noyes also continued to improve earning her second letter while only in the eighth grade. The experience gained the season and their continued hard work indicates the girls will challenge the leagues best in the season to come. Tennis Team finished the season with a record of 7 wins and 3 loses which earned Har¬ wich a second place ranking in the league and a spot in the state sectional tournament. The most outstanding player award was presented to Matt Brown for his highly competi¬ tive and aggressive play. A. Brown, N. Pina, H. Stabins, E. Jones, J. King, T. Murphy, J. Mazenac, P. Lendh, N. Led by Seniors Darin Karras, Mark Russell and Underclass¬ men Ken Cahoon, Nelson Pina, Todd Perry, Jon Simard, Dale Karras, Brian Moore and Den¬ nis Hoye the team sailed through a 12-3-1 over all record and a 6-1-1 C + I. Losing only two members of the team and with many fine golfers coming up the team looks to keep the crown in Harwich. t Coach Poore, Mar Mazanec, Amy Hodgkins, Tara Kaplan, Sami Pickells, Mary Larivee, Jennifer Santacroce, Leslie Allen, Heather Currey, Linda Stephens, Wendy Heap, Joelle Lamontagne, Jeanne y MacDiarmid, Lyn Fernandes, Pat Dunne, Sue Hodgkins, and Lisa Dery The Field Hockey team had another outstanding year. They dominated Cape and Islands League play with an impressive record of 13-1. This record made Harwich Cape and Islands co-champs. Also their record enabled the Riderettes to qualify for the 10th consecutive year for the State Tournament. Cape And Island Champions The Riderettes had a very strong defensive unit. They gave up only 24 corners, 26 shots, and the freshman goalie allowed only 6 goals all season. The forward line also dominated by scoring the most goals in the league. Harwich continued to demonstrate its excellence by placing more members on the ALL-STAR TEAM than any other. Joelle Lamontagne brought further recognition to the team and herself by becoming the Boston Globe Player of the year. This is the highest award given on the high school level. This was a young team from the start, but even though they’re losing 6 seniors, they’ll be back next year to defend their title. X O Bob Brackett - coach, S. Luce, L. Jusilla - Managers Back row: J.
