Since that time he has shown us that his primary concern is that the education we receive be second to none. Therefore, it is our honor to dedicate the 1983 Soundings to Mr. Bresnahan. We hope that this year will prove to be only one of many great years for both Mr. Bres¬ nahan and the students of Harwich High School. 18 Superintendent of Harwich Schools, Robert Twiss, School Committee Members, Mr. David Tobey, Mr. Joel Wienberg, Mrs. Clotilda Blackmoore, Mrs. Francis Ballem, Mrs. Nancy Clapp. HARWICH HIGH SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION Mr. Vincent Bresnahan, Principal; Mr. Fredrick Ebbett, Vice Principal 19 Vincent Bresnahan Principal Irving Anderson Robert Twiss Superintendent Louise Aubrey Frederick Ebbett Vice Principal Richard Besciak Ralph Burns Glenn Bryant Sandy Clarke Ralph Davis Meredith Drew, Dr. Dennis Dwyer Fred Dunford Marion Eckhardt Patricia Farrell Joseph Fede Peter Goldstein Susan Hoffman 21 Edwin Jaworski Diane Jones Stephen Kot Paul Lamontagne Kris Larson Timothy Lynch Paul Mangelinkx Maida Mase Robert McBride James Meere John Mulkern Ralph McKenzie Daniel O’Leary Carl Olson Suzanne Parades Cheryl Poore Glenn Rose Claire Stevens 23 Walter Thompson Theodore Tischler Gail Turner Peter Wanderlich Eileen Zelek Nancy Westwood Anne Irwin Linda Guinen Rose Stenson Pearl Mecure Tim Clifford Agnes Rose Vin Forni (Top Left and clockwise) Mr. Larson, Mr. Dwyer, Mrs. Aubrey, Mr. Kot, Mr. Bresnahan, Mr. Olson, Mr. O’Leary The Class of 1986 John Rebello, Kelley Petrie, Mr. Mulkern, Sam McCormick, Mike Brittain Greg Arsenault James Bartell Maynard Black Michael Brittain Patricia Brown Eric Caldwell Trade Lisa Lisa Jon Kathy Coen Cole Coleman Comeau Thurston Lisa Centeio Bradford Wendy Mathew Thomas Peter David Cox Curtice Daley Danahy DePina Dion 28 Griselda Caminero Stephen Frederick John Griswold Sally Holmes Katherine Hadfield Dennis Hoye m ; Lisa Hill Eric Johnson Donna Edwards Steven Fernandez Jennifer Gonsalves Geri Herrmann Glen Johnson Edward Donovan Stephen Gable Kimberly Greene Chris Paul Vagenas Gianelli Frederick Ebbett Shawn Fernandez Neil Gomes Jeffrey Handler Dionne Graupiner Lori Hersey Gregory Johnson Britt Elwell Elizabeth Duggan Harley Erickson Matt Welsh Daniel Fennell 29 Terry Tracey Tara Jayme Marielle Laura Johnson Groswold Kaplan King Lamontagne Lee Frank Roxanne Kim Mary Sam Marc L’Etoile Lombard Lopes Mazenec McCormack McCluskey Sara Jarrod Karen Claus Lorraine McDonough McKenney Mercer Michelson Miranda Brian Moore Vincent Julie Daniel Susan Isabella Kelly Murphy Nicholson O’Brien Pasda Patou Petrie Maris Dana Diane Jon Barbara Glenn Pina Rank McLea Rebello Resendes Ritz Michelle Norman Audrey Samantha Christopher Scott Roderick Routhier Roza Samuelson Sharkey Smith Even Kim Jacquelyn Janeen Richard Sokale Sugda Taylor Teixeira Thayer mhHnt mpmy 33 Leslie Scott Steve Joanne Todd John Allen Anderson Andreason Ballam Perry Bartell Gail Joe Aimee Pamela Susan Phillip Bassett Beck Blodgette Brackett Broderick Burnham Erich Jennifer Milton Tina Tom Richard Burton Carroll Caminero Carron Curry Coughlan 34 Cheyl Heather Bradley Anne Lisa David Cowan Currey DesMarais Devine Nichols Dodson Diane Timothy William Lena Christina Mathew Doherty Doherty Doherty Dunford Ebbett Eldredge Christopher Christine Joanne Stephanie Katie William Engel Finnell Fitzgerald Gomes Greenhalgh Hadfield Mary Susan Timothy Susan Kimberly Robert Hannigan Hart Hayes Haynes Healy Henry Jonathan Mia Steve David John Laurette Hemeon Hill Howard Judge Jaworski Jussila 35 Dale Larry Marylee Phillip Dawn Susan Karras MacCaskie L’Heureux Limbacher Linfors Luce Michelle Medeiros John MacDonald Mark Michaud Allison Neese Dean Parent Bridget Maxwell Robert Murphy Heidi Nelson Tracy Piquette Doreen Lusher Jennifer Mello Shanna Nealy Francis O’Brien Steven McCluskey Mark McKenney Larry Moore Allen Morse David Nicholson James Nordstrom Kim Ribbins Michelle Rodin Stephanie Naylor Peter Nelson Rick Coughlan 36 Jonatha John Andrew Simard Small Smith Linda Stephens Colin Steveson Christine Sylvester Scott Vangelder Michelle Vicino Karen Warren Tim Lauren Scott Taylor Tomasian Tyldesley Jennifer Santacroce Valerie Smith Edie Peters Henning Stabins Peter Susan Glenn Elizabeth Susan Kristen Waters Westwood Whalen Whitney Whitney Widegren Roger Julie Karl Susan Scott Kathrine Wiliams Young Young Hayes Elliott Norris 37 This candid section is presented compliments of the class of 1985. Band members involved in All Cape, S.E. District, and New England Festivals will do a lot of playing. The Instrumental Music Booster’s Club will hold another auction to finish fund raising for the Spring Band Exchange. Many concerts will be performed and with the Spring Fling as a marching finish. Chorus The Sr. High Chorus, although small this year, has an excellent tight sound. They perform 2 concerts a year as well as singing for various commun¬ ity functions. Several members of the chorus have been accepted into Festival Choruses sponsored by music educators. Barney Halon, Michelle Robin, Becky Welsh have been accepted into the All Cape Island Chorus and Barney has been accepted into the South¬ east District Chorus. The elected officers were: President - Nancy Whitney, Vice-President - Karen Davis, Treasurer - Tim Brenahan, Secretary - Leslie Allen. Dances during the year were sponsored by the Council as well as Santa Claus Pictures and the selling of Harwich pins. The highlight of the year was fun-filled “Spirit Week” which included pep rallies, hired bands, and sports events. The profit from these events was compiled into a scholarship for the graduating class. This was the first of an annual scholarship to be given to the seniors. Student Advisory Committee THE STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE The Student Advisory Committee has proven to be an integral link between the students and the School Committee. Along with the “Sentinel”, The Advisory Commit¬ tee was instrumental in the re¬ establishment of our April vacation. The Advisory Committee has proven to be a true advocator for the students of Harwich High School. Front row, 1-r, Brad Cox, Jeff Parent, Lisa Cole, Lauren Tomasian. International Scholarships mt9 1973 Harwich Celebrates 10th Anniversary 1983 Our thanks to Miss Ina Gould, Mrs. Shirley Gomes and Mr. Fred Ebbett, founders of our Chapter. In ten years, Harwich families and Harwich High School have welcomed seventeen (17) foreign students to their community beginning in 1973 with Basil from Uganda to our present students, Mie from Bolivia and Florian from Germany. Many of our Harwich High students have participated in the American Abroad Program beginning with our very first student in 1975 — Ina Gould went to Malaya for the Summer Program. In 1976 Ann Blackmore went to Austria. In 1977, Jim Rice went to England; John Donovan, Mexico; and Carol Hannigan went to Turkey — all on the summer program. In 1979 Peter Michelson traveled to Thialand for a year; in 1980 Sally Higgins went to Germany for a year and Sue McKenna went to Chile for the summer. In 1981 Roger Bennett spent the year in France. Donna Chipman returned home this January after spending a year in South Africa. A.F.S. welcomes anyone interested in learning more about its programs. The Harwich Chapters, students and adults, lend a great deal of support to all those wishing to apply for a trip abroad. We would like to see more H.H.S. students take this opportunity and apply for a trip abroad. Anyone interested should contact any A.F.S. student club member. Help us celebrate our 10th Anniversary by becoming part of the A.F.S. program. ' -t : aad a BBIfess m - ' : ' ! However, Coach Horan’s squad finished the season in dubious fashion as they could manage to win only two of their last six games, just falling shy of a post-season tournament berth. The Rough Riders were led by All-Stars Alan Hannigan and D. }. Thiele, who through their adept hitting and pitching abilities, kept their team apace of league leaders Sandwich and Nauset. Hannigan’s impressive .333 batting average was followed up by Thiele’s .314 mark, and the two continually contributed clutch hits in aiding the Harwich cause. With the return of Thiele, along with many impressive players from last year’s team like Seniors John Marini and Steve Martin as well as Juniors Dave Doherty, Pat Hannigan, Walter Craig, and Chris Render, Harwich baseball should rebound from last season, and find themselves contending for the league title. Coach Poore’s squad, being evolved from scratch, utilized inordinate team hustle, speed, and desire in establishing themselves as a legitimate league power. The team was anchored by the superlative tandem of Sue O’Brien and Mi¬ chelle Thayer, who triumphantly guided their team on a consistent basis. With the majority of last season’s team returning, Coach Poore can look forward to an equally satisfying campaign in 1983. Boys Varsity Soccer Rough Rider Soccer showed positive signs of revival this past Fall as they compiled an improved 4-6-2 overall record. Throughout their 1982 campaign, Coach Rose ' s team exhibited noteworthy hustle, determination, and most importantly, a positive mental attitude. The defense was upheld by standouts Dave Doherty, Chris Render, and first year goalie D. J. Thiele. The offensive attack was led by Juniors Pat Hannigan and Walter Craig. Coach Rose expects his young and talented squad to have greater success next fall, and hopefully contend for the league championship. Bottom (Left to Right): David Coomber, John Marini, Bill Doherty, Chris Render, David Doherty, Ronnie Simons, Walter Craig, Danny Chase, Frank Lally, Greg Tomasian. Top: Britt Elwell. Girls Soccer Girls soccer enjoyed a satisfying season last fall as they recorded an improved 3-6-2 overall mark. The Rough Riderettes were piloted by Seniors Wendy Craig (captain) and Carolyn Simon. Simon led the team in scoring as she accounted for several gamewinning goals. The inspirational defense was com¬ prised of several motivated and hard-working players like Craig, Sue Whitney, Beth Sykes, and the superb goaltending of Karen Davis and Aimee Blodgett. Coach Horan looks forward to a successful campaign next season as he will lose only two members of his young roster to graduation. Bottom (Left to Right): Jennifer Sykes, Kim Healy, Wendy Curtis, Beth Sykes, Wendy Craig, Gretchen Stoltz, Liz Whitney, Tara Schaefer Top: Coach Horan, Karen Warren, Sue Whitney, Chris Sylvester, Kim Donnelley, Karen Davis, Jennifer Mello, Frances O’Brien, Lauren Tomasian The girls track team, led by veterans Sue Solimine, Wendy Craig, Wendy Heap, Laurette Jussila, Chris Sylves¬ ter, Amy McBride, and sever¬ al junior high standouts, finished third in the Cape Islands League with a 5-5 record. Individually, Solimine was league champion in the long jump. New school records were established in the 4X100 yard by the team of Solimine, Heap, Jussila, and Mary Hannigan, and Jussila also set a superior record in the 100 m hurdles. With the entire team return¬ ing for this season, prospects look extremely bright for 1983. Girls Track 1st Row - Coco Moran, Amy Anderson, Kim Kology, Wendy Robinson, Sharon Murphy 2nd Row - Wendy Craig, Michelle McCarthy, Mary Hannigan, Sue Solomini, Kristen Keane, Lorette Jussila, Jackie Falla 3rd Row - Kristy Monroe, Amy Hodgkins, Sharon Cahoon, Sue Luce, Sue Whitney, Amy McBride, Wendy Heap, Chris Sylbester, Tracy Ennes, Darci Dubreuil Coaches - Dr. Meredith Drew, Ralph Burns Cross Country Boys cross country, under the tutelage of Coach Don Bates amassed a disappointing 4-4 record this past fall. However, several individuals enjoyed superlative campaigns. Senior MVP, Jay Filteau was a standout performer as he remained undefeated in all home meets. Senior Co-Captain, John Ritz and Sophomore sensa¬ tion, David Dodson were impressive competi¬ tors. With the rise of Freshmen Jon Comeau, Glenn Ritz, and Sam McCormack, Harwich Cross Country remains in contention for the league title in 1983. Girls cross country continued to lack sufficient participation, in terms of numbers, to mount a significant threat for the league crown last year. However, Freshmen Sally Holmes and Patty Noyes were notewrothy performers in 1982. Hopefully, an expected increase in participants will enable Coach Bates to develop a more competitive squad in the future. Boys: Bottom row (Left to Right): Matt Germain, Wes Cushman, Jay Filteau, John Ritz, David Donovan, Troy Dill, Glenn Ritz Top row: Coach Bates, Sam McCormack, Jon Comeau, David Dodson, Richard Dennis, John Nilson, Sean O’Brien, Scott Baker Girls: Bridgett O’Brien, Sally Holmes, Missy Centio, Pat Noyes, Elizabeth Duggan, Coach Bates. Boys tennis suffered a severe setback from the championship season of two years ago, dropping to a disappointing 4-6 over¬ all mark. However, with the loss of only one Senior from Coach Kot’s squad, they hope to rebound and strongly compete for the league title in 1983. Particularly important for next season will be the return of number one player and team MVP Tom Bennert. Other key players who figure to contribute heavi¬ ly to this year’s team are Seniors Matt Brown, Eric Jones and Joe King, Junior Greg Tomasian, and so¬ phomore Henning Stab- bins. Boys Tennis (Left to Right) : Adam Brown, Nelson Pina, Henning Stabbins, Eric Jones, Joe King, Terry Murphy, Joe Mazenec, Peter Lendt, Nyal Fuentes, Greg Tomasian, Matt Brown, Tom Bennert, David Derby, Coach Stephen Kot. 70 Golf Team The Golf Team was once again successful in attaining the Cape and Islands League Champion¬ ship last spring. Coach Bryant’s squad was led by the consis¬ tently low scores of senior MVP David Leger. Last year Harwich had the distinct advantage of possessing depth: a crucial element for any prosperous athletic team. Sophomore standout Ken Cahoon as well as Freshmen Todd Perry, Jon Simard and Dale Karras record¬ ed vital triumphs in their individual matches throughout. With the loss of only Leger to graduation, and with the return of the talented senior tandem of Mark Russell and Darin Karras, Harwich should continue its reign as Cape and Islands champs. Field Girls varsity field hockey enjoyed a tremendous season last fall as they captured the Massachusetts South Sectional crown and subsequently travelled all the way to the state finals where they eventually bowed to a powerful Weston squad by a narrow 2-1 margin. Coach Poore’s highly talented team must be adulated for continually overcoming their favored aversaries throughout the arduous post-season tournament. The Rough Riderette scoring machine was piloted by All-Star Michelle Thayer, Sue Solimine, Wendy Heap, and Jeanne MacDiarmid. The stable defense was led by Joelle Lamontagne, Lucy Moran, and eighth grade goalie, Lisa Dery. Thayer and Lamontagne must receive further praise for being selected to the Boston Globe Globe All-Star Field Hockey team. The goal of the Soundings staff has been to captivate and, in a sense, immortalize the divergent ideals and textures of this, the Class of 1983. The production of this year’s Soundings has indeed been a formidable, yet challenging endeavor for all involved. The deadlines to be met, the money to be raised, and the decisions to be made have demanded perseverance and patience alike. The surmounting of such obstacles, and the mastery of the process has ultimately fomented a sense of cooperation as well as satisfaction amongst this staff. 85 HARWICH HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1983 yt. jDri jentj 5QRVTHE% From Glories V Adapted jcr Tagc bij Paul Sllb From Stories in the Grimm Brothers collection. t Aesops jables ¥?, ■ November 19 2 D ° 8 00 pm Adults 3 Atndients At Mr. Tischler and Mr. Groppe If you have ever participated in a school play, you realize the many hours of work that are necessary to accomplish the final production. We also wish to thank Mrs. Tischler for the many unselfish hours of work on behalf of our school productions. J. Thiele (President), Lauren Stevenson (Treasurer) Thank You Mr. Dunford Throughout our years in high school, the class of nineteen hundred and eighty-three has encountered both prosperous and adverse times. As any discerning individual would realize, the task of guiding young adults through the intricate maze of college preparatory procedures, class fundraisers, and the difficulties encountered by teenagers in a contemporary society, is an enormous one indeed. However, our class advisor, Mr. Frederick Dunford, has continually stabilized the efforts of our class by accepting and overcoming the everyday challenges brought forth over the past four years. This ceaseless perserverance characterizes Mr. Dunford’s attitude as one dedicated to success and encouraging each student to aspire beyond their apparent potential. His excessive and seemingly infinite energy and enthusiasm to achieve the financial stability as well as the crucial cohesiveness that bonded the class of 1983, will always be remembered. Our sincere gratitude is extended to the much appreciated efforts of Mr. Dunford, who, with his veracity, devotion, and levity has enabled the class of ’83 to enjoy four prolific years at Harwich High School. 87 Joseph A.
