After 20 years as Coach of Harwich High School Varsity Baseball, Fred Ebbett has decided to hang up his spikes. Coach Ebbett leaves behinda spectacular career record of 240 wins and 122 losses. In addition, he has also led 14 squads to Cape and Islands Cham¬ pionships and various levels of state competition. Throughout his coaching career Mr. Ebbett has con¬ sistently demonstrated to his teams, opponents, and faithful fans, that special combination of good sports¬ manship, team spirit and personal integrity. It is with best wishes that we dedicate this page to Harwich’s own “Mr. Baseball”. 27

BASEBALL Coach Ebbett couldn’t have asked for a more exciting or dramatic finish to both the 1981 season and his coaching career, as his varsity squad was once again atop the Cape and Islands League with an outstanding record of 12-2. Eight returning letter- men were bolstered by a mixture of rising JV players and other talent. Len Flannigan, who accumulated the team’s highest batting average, was named to the Boston Globe team. SOFTBALL De spite the loss of four key players, Cheryl Poore and her girls combined clutch hitting, superb pitching, fielding and running, to place at the top of the Cape and Islands League. This enabled them to enter state competition. In their first game against East Bridgewater, the Riderettes channelled all their energies, however, this was not enough to beat their opponent. Senior Penny Fennell was named Boston Globe Player of the Year, as well as the teams most valuable player of 1981. Penny, along with Cheryl Heap and sophomore Michelle Thayer, was also named to the All-Star team.
