NOYES HARWICH HIGH SCHOOL 1968-1982 Over the years Mr. Noyes has welcomed many a freshman class, helped to guide them through their four years, and bid them fairewell as seniors. This year howev¬ er, the seniors of 1982 are proud to share their good-byes with Mr. Noyes. After nearly a decade and a half of service as principal of Harwich High School, he will be retiring after this, the 1981-82 aca¬ demic year. Mr. Noyes will be remembered by many for many different reasons. Surely, few will forget his modest yet well asserted leadership, his easy-going disposition, and perhaps even his morning announcements. Above all, however, Mr. Noyes should and most certainly will be remembered for his sincere concern for the welfare of the stu¬ dent body. Without exception he has maintained a very close working relation¬ ship with the students of Harwich High and has responded with great support dur¬ ing some of their greatest and darkest mo¬ ments, alike. On behalf of the Class of 1982 as well as the entire school population, we wish Mr. Noyes the best of luck in what will surely be a proud and exultant retirement. The continuity and stability with which Harwich High has prevailed over the past decade and a half, is a direct reflection of Mr. Noyes’ mertorious service and thus affords him a most viable claim to success. BASEBALL Coach Ebbett couldn’t have asked for a more exciting or dramatic finish to both the 1981 season and his coaching career, as his varsity squad was once again atop the Cape and Islands League with an outstanding record of 12-2. Eight returning letter- men were bolstered by a mixture of rising JV players and other talent. Len Flannigan, who accumulated the team’s highest batting average, was named to the Boston Globe team. He was also a member of the All Cape League team, along with Tim O’Brien, Don Marini and Mike King. 1st Row: M. Naylor-Mgr., B. Cahill Mgr. M. King, J. Dunakin, E. Capozzi, C. Brown G. Souza, D. Fredericks 26 After 20 years as Coach of Harwich High School Varsity Baseball, Fred Ebbett has decided to hang up his spikes. Coach Ebbett leaves behinda spectacular career record of 240 wins and 122 losses. In addition, he has also led 14 squads to Cape and Islands Cham¬ pionships and various levels of state competition. Throughout his coaching career Mr. Ebbett has con¬ sistently demonstrated to his teams, opponents, and faithful fans, that special combination of good sports¬ manship, team spirit and personal integrity. It is with best wishes that we dedicate this page to Harwich’s own “Mr. Baseball”. 27 SOFTBALL De spite the loss of four key players, Cheryl Poore and her girls combined clutch hitting, superb pitching, fielding and running, to place at the top of the Cape and Islands League. This enabled them to enter state competition. In their first game against East Bridgewater, the Riderettes channelled all their energies, however, this was not enough to beat their opponent. Senior Penny Fennell was named Boston Globe Player of the Year, as well as the teams most valuable player of 1981. Penny, along with Cheryl Heap and sophomore Michelle Thayer, was also named to the All-Star team. Other valuable members of the squad were outfielder Terry Lopes, and shortstop Trudy Heap, noted for her speed and agility. 1st Row: K. Warren, L. Kology, R. Warren, C. Heap, P. Fen¬ nell, T. The year saw Matt Barry voted the League MVP, while Kevin Bresnahan and Richard Dennis set new time records in the 100M and 200M sprints at the D-Y Invitational. However, lack of depth again kept the team’s record at 4-4. Only greater numbers will gain Harwich a championship. CROSS COUNTRY The Harwich High Cross Country team finished their 1981 season with a record of 3- 5. Rick Comeau showed excellent effort and performance and was awared as team MVP. Other exceptional team members were Jay Filtear, Rick Dennis and Jeff Gomes. Coach Bates will be loosing three seniors this year and will be looking toward his new freshman Sam McCormack, Glenn Ritz and others to carry him to victory next season. J. Ritz, J. Post season play for the Riderettes was one constant stream of extended playing, double overtimes and stroke-offs, as tie after tie resulted in triumph. The girls met their match however, against Hingham as, despite all their efforts they suffered a close and disappointing defeat. Senior goalie, Sharon Dill, among others was truly a master of the sport as she continously defended the Harwich goal, by every means possible, including stopping one with her mouth. Terry Lopes, the leading scorer, with Michelle Thayer and Trudy Heap close behind all combined for one superb offensive line up. Coach C. Poore, J. McDiarmid, S. Hodgkins, S. Solimine, J. They saw a lot of potential in sophomores, Walter Craig, Greg Tomasian and other team members, however, the young team’s lack of experience was a hindering factor in most competition with most boys returning in ’82. The Riders look forward to a more successful fall season. 2nd Row Coach Rose, T. Luce, D. Mason, A. Steegstra, J. Giannelli, W. Craig, D. Gonsalves, J. Marini, J. Parent P. Hanni- gan, C. The rookies were supported by eight very talented veterans. Outstanding performances were given throughout tht season by Jennifer Moran, Julie Paulus, and Wendy Craig. The highlight of the season came when, with less than one minutr remaining, star fullback Craig booted a penalty kick past Nauset goalie to end the year. With fifteen returning letter winners, next year should be a very promising one for the Riderettes. ;m£ATt F m | -ijm 9 jH -. mi ■ . HL 5P j 1st Row: H. Leugers, L. Ko- logy, J. McKenna, A. BOY’S TENNIS Tom Tomasian, who suffered a broken arm early in the 1980 season, made an outstanding comeback and became the 1982 team MVP. This year’s team was one for brothers. In addition to Tom’s brother Greg, Davin and Desmond Curran became stars in the Cape and Islands Division. Other players contribut¬ ing significantly to the division title were Freshmen Frank Moran, Nelson Pina, Jeff Foster, and second year veterans Matt Brown and Eric Jones. With the majority of the players returning again this year, Coach Kot can look forward to an equally successful 1982 season. 1st Row: G. Tomasian, J. Fos¬ ter, F. Moran 2nd Row: Coach Steve Kot, M. It is quite clear that Coach Glenn Bryant was pleased with his team’s performance, as he modestly sports his C I champs sweater. With the loss of Morgan, Coach Bryant will be relying on veterans Dave Leger, and Rob Knox, and the new talent of Ken Cahoon, John Simard and others, to keep the championship crown in Harwich 1st Row: Coach Glenn Bryant, G. As coach, Glenn Rose appeared to be having one of his most successful seasons in recent years. The highlight of the season was perhaps the team’s winning streak which reached five before it was broken by Martha’s Vineyard. Coach Rose found valuable talent in Demi and David Gonzalves (season high scorer), Captain Alan Hannigan, Don Livramento, and others. With many of this year’s team members returning next season, and many able J.V. players advancing in rank, Roughrider Basketball may just be on the comeback. Tom Fred ericks Pat Hannigan John Hemeon John Jaworski Frank Moran Peter Nelson Andy Smith Coach - Jeff Allard 40 GIRL’S BASKETBALL The girl’s varsity basketball team finished the season with a record of three wins and eleven losses. The final tally of eleven losses does not indicate the intensity and pride with which the girl’s played. The biggest problem that plagued the team was inexperience. With only three seniors, Sharon Dill, Nancy Dunne, and Sue O ' Brien, the remainder of the squad was comprised of one junior, five sophomores, and three freshmen. Coach Horan was very pleased that the girls never stopped giving 100% throughout the entire frustrating season, and he is looking forward to a more successful season next year. 1st Row: S. Heap, P. ICE HOCKEY The Harwich hockey team maintained its status as ruling dynasty of the Cape and Islands League this year as they skated to their fourth consecutive championship. Coach Brackett once again proved to be a winner, as he had to gear the team up for the sharp competition this year with much less ice time. Seniors Joel Pina, Tom McKenna, Tim Hall, Don Campbell, Frank Brown, and Paul Hewins led the team past top contenders Sandwich and Cape Tech. A host of underclassmen provided great support and depth this season, and should promise to make Harwich a contend¬ er again next year. 1st Row: S. Howard, P. Hewins, T. Luce G. Whalen, W. Our Madrigal Singers are members of the chorus who audition every year for a position with the group. They rehearse after school on Wednesday. The Madrigal Singers have sung at many private functions in town as well as performing in the annual Winter and Spring School Concerts. 47 (Hhe Jiariuicl] Jitgl] Sclinnl Sentinel Sentinel Receives New England Journalism Award For Second Consecutive Year. The 1981- 82 club has doubled in size thanks to the in¬ terest of many fresh¬ men and Junior High students This year they have hosted two students, Thiery Guyader from France, and Norma Manzano from Mexico. NORMA A welcome addition to the class of 1982 has been our A.F.S. student, Norma Castillano Manzano. Norma arrived last July from Mexico City. She is spending her stay in Harwich with Mr. and Mrs. James Elliot and their three children. In addition to participating in varsity soccer, Norma has been active in the senior class fund raisers. During her stay, she has already visited Washington, D.C. and Norma has been pleas¬ antly surprised at the ease in which teenagers in the U.S. live and travel. Upon her graduation from Harwich, Norma will return to Mexico where she plans to study architecture at one of the universities. Norma is certainly a credit to the A.F.S. program, and we wish her the best of luck in the future. Thiery Guyader-France Class Officers: S. Howard-Vice President, M. Michaud-Trea- surer, T. It is a word whose definition we have all tried to discern at one time or another throughout our high school years and will probably continue to strive for, for many years to come. In the course of such a quest, little insights or clues are often found which contribute to the whole picture. As advisor to the Class of 1982, Miss Farrell has given us just such a foreshadowing. As freshmen we entered the school, many of us timid and naive to what awaited us. By the close of that year however, much to the credit of Miss Farrell and the prosperous fund raising activity which she guided us through, we learned the value of ambition and integrity. These values not only helped us to succeed financially as a class, but perhaps more importantly, to persevere and to meet the challenge of our four years at Harwich. Now as seniors, we are ready to reap the profits of these four years. With Christmas trees sold, we are preparing for a final celebration, our Senior Banquet. It is evident that much has changed since that first freshman fund raiser. Working together has given us an interdependence and respect for each other so as to make us one as a class. This is the finest result of Miss Farrell’s guidance and the true essence for which we now express our gratitude. On behalf of the Class of 1982 and our current officers we thank you. Miss Farrell, for your guidance. 99 JUNIOR PROM MAY 15, 1981 OUTRIGGER INN On pen - Mollv Mclean Queen ' s Court - Juiie Burnham, Cindy Crosby, Maria DeDominicus, Patty Piersall, Kim Thayer, Jennifer Thyng King ' s Court - Roger Bennett, Frank Brown, Bruce Bushey, Paul Hewins, kod isjiox, ivncnaei L,earneu Song - -Time in a Bottle Flower - Yellow Rose An evening of friends, laughter an memories. :V: : T ■ a lilllliiilttillill MM This Page Upper I .eft: J. During these four years each individual would gradually come to realize the importance of character development, career objectives, and responsibility. We elected class officers Joel Pina and Tracy Brown who along with our advisor Miss Farrell, managed to launch our first, and very successful fund raising drive; a popcorn sale. Everyone was amused by the raucous antics of John Belushi in ANIMAL HOUSE, and toga parties became the latest fad. During the summer of 1979 we were becoming intimate with the usual high school rituals such as concerts, parties, and summer employment. A crude awakening awaited us at the beginning of our sophomore year. Besciak’s European History course forced many of us to reform our romper room behavior which had characterized our freshman year, and suddenly made us aware of our political environment. We elected Tracy Brown and Jane Simard as class officers and continued our successful fund raising drives. In November of 1979 a fanatical mod blindly entranced by the spirit of the Islamic Revolution, siezed the U.S. Embassy in Teheran and took 63 Americans hostage. We saw our American soldiers fail to liberate our own citizens held in Iran, while the Soviet Union spread its hegemony of oppression over the people of Afghanistan. Now we, along with Jimmy Carter, faced the harsh reality of our growing impotence in the world. Though these events were a major part of our conscience, they did not keep us from experiencing our own lives. After being subjected to a series of grueling final exams, we attained freedom for another summer. Abdicating our student responsibil¬ ities for three months, the beach was a familiar locale for gatherings of all sorts. Music was an integral part of our summer as we submerged ourselves in the sounds of The Doors, The Grateful Dead, and J Giels; who we saw at concerts, heard at parties, and incorporated into every segment of our lives. We returned to school in September as juniors whose perspectives were, it seemed, greatly changed by the summer. By this time, one was made to realize how comfortable, and snugly familiar Harwich High actually was. Every inch of the school had become somewhat of a second nature, another way of life was hard to picture in our minds. We were to be gradually brought out of this reverie during the course of the year. All Cape College Day, PSATs and SATs enlightened us to the fact that our spirits would not always be contained within the walls of Harwich High School. Our minds began turning toward introspection and self evaluation. Instead of poking fun at the weaknesses of others, we tried to recognize our own individual vulnerabilities and strengths, and how they would affect our future. We did not, however, drown ourselves in sobriety so much that it destroyed our high school spirit. Weekends were often lively and ebullient, with a good number of the student body attending memorable parties at Arjen Steegstra’s and Gil Gomes’. We possessed an unrestrained enthusiasm towards school sports as we watched Hans Anderson and the hockey team emerge from another season undefeated. We were also thrilled when the field hockey team glided to another championship. The high point of the Junior year, which took months of preparation, was the Junior Prom. Class officers Chris Vrountas and Tom McKenna conducted several highly successful fund raisers, and the various prom committees worked arduously to have everything confirmed long before the Prom. On May 15, we went to the Outrigger, danced to the hard rock sound of our prom band Laguidera, and then proceeded to party until the next morning at Arjen Steegstra’s and Bill Cotell’s. Indeed a memorable evening. During our Junior year, the events that occurred in the world would move us, shape us, and perhaps change our perspective on life itself. We called the nature of man into question when one of the foremost spokesmen for world peace, John Lennon, was gunned down outside his New York apartment. The assasination attempt on President Reagan, and ironically, Pope John Paul II, left many of us with a pessimistic attitude towards the world outside of Harwich High School. After 444 days, in January 1982, the 52 American hostages were finally released from Iranian captivity. Americans let out a sigh of relief, and turned their heads in hope, to observe a new political generation. On the same day as the release of the hostages, Ronald Reagan took the oath of office. His slogan “Let’s make this country great again.” inspired millions of Americans who were disillusioned with their country and the Presidency. The summer of warmth, water and work gradually flowed into the start of school. We were now seniors, but that status did not preoccupy our minds. The class elections brought us the familiar faces of Tracy Brown and Greg Vicino. It was an innocuous year until the Student Advisory Board stood valiantly, but in vain in trying to dissuade the School Committee’s decision of a single March vacation rather than the traditional two weeks in February and April. Fortunately the field hockey team was more successful with another winning season and an invitation to a tournament in Florida. The fall brought the hard task of plowing through college applications, asking for teacher recommendations and scheduling interviews. It was a time for us to evaluate our goals and aspirations. For many, their already subdued state of introspection led right in to college planning, at times, to fits of despair or to urges of “cruisin’ outta here”. Despite the seriousness of school, good times were not lacking. From North Road to Christmas Tree Sales, anywhere was a place to party. In planning for college, we were amongst the many who felt the bite of the Reagan budget cuts. The cuttings of basic human services had us questioning the sense of our leaders from the local to the national level. The nonsense reached its highest plateau when OMB director, David Stockman remarked, “No one understands what’s going on with all these numbers,” in reference to the Federal Budget. Perhaps the ultimate irony of the world situation, is a workers’ revolt in a “communist” state. The Polish military coup was to preserve the “socialist democracy”. The outside world is full of paradox, ironies, and contradictions of what we believe ought to be, and what actually appears to be. But these contradictions lie not only in our government, in worker and Islamic revolutions, in the violent deaths of peaceful men; but in ourselves. We as a nation are confused over the state and direction of this world, and are vulnerable to pulpit blinding rhetoric, which has led many to much sadness in the past. In going out ‘there’, the credible and reliable set of ideas and values will come only from ourselves, our own constitution. Let us hope that our honesty, creativity, and faith will lead us to a better world. Christopher Vrountas Gregory Vicino 105 SOUNDINGS 1982 STAFF Throughout our days at Harwich we have encountered a myriad of experience that have culminated in, and proceeded to de¬ fine our final year. The goal of the Sound¬ ings staff has been to captivate and, in a sense, immortalize the divergent ideals and texture of this, the Class of 1982. The production of this year’s Soundings has indeed been a formidable, yet chal¬ lenging endeavor for all involved. The deadlines to be met, the money to be raised, and the decisions to be made have demanded perseverance and patience alike. The surmounting of such obstacles, and the mastery of the process has ulti¬ mately fomented a sense of cooperation as well as satisfaction amongst this staff. EDITORS Staff :Front Row; M. A pioneer in his own right, he has provided im¬ measurable guidance with material new to the staff as well as to himself. The Soundings staff would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to Mr. O’Leary for his invaluable assistance; a sentiment which as at times been masked by precipitant fervor. Now that we realize the amount of work involved in putting to¬ gether a yearbook, it is with great respect that we recognize and commend Mr. Davis for his elev¬ en years of service as a yearbook advisor. The sky explodes with color - then suddenly, all is grey. We faced this day like any other. We shared joy and sadness with one another. We met our challenges one by one. And somehow they’ve been overcome. Now this day is gone forever, Locked in our minds like buried treasure, Tomorrow the sun shall rise again And with today’s treasure carried within. We shall journey forward to meet the new day. Miranda Samuelson •r. •’,, ' ■mmm YHarwich Higfi Setter utiary Media Cents: •s )aK Street I He : rwich, Ma 0264! HARWICH HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY 75 OAK ST.
