COACH DUNBAR RETIRES With the retirement of Mr. Dunbar last spring, an era at Harwich High came to an end. One of the most popular, well known and esteemed members of the faculty and community, he leaves behind a long record of devotion and accomplishment which will not soon be equalled. He came to Harwich High twenty-eight years ago with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston University and a strong desire to work with young people. It was the “old school” then, and as the town grew so too did its school enrollment. Inevitably, the athletic pro¬ gram was enlarged and there was plenty of work for Mr. Dunbar. He began teaching physical education in 1952, and coached soccer until 1971 and basketball until 1976. During his career as basketball coach he demonstrated unques¬ tioned mastery of physical training and game strategy. He demand¬ ed and received the best from his players, a talent which resulted in seeing his teams fifteen time winners of the Cape and Islands Basketball Championship. 18

Affectionately nicknamed “Charlie Harwich” by the media and his colleagues alike he was voted COACH OF THE YEAR and earned their respect as one of the best professionals in high school athletics throughout the entire state. His contributions to the youth of Har¬ wich were not limited to coaching alone. As Athletic Director he was largely responsible for the expansion of the over-all sports program, including athletics for girls. His efforts were culminated in the new track and soccer field dedicated in his name last Octo¬ ber. At the time of his retirement Mr. Dunbar held a Masters Degree in Education and was the first person in Harwich to bear the title of Athletic Director. However, he leaves Harwich High with much more than that; memories of the growth of Harwich High Scoool and of the maturation of hundreds of young men and women that he knew both as a teacher and friend. If teaching is a form of love, then Charlie Dunbar gave and earned full measure. Planning Strategies - 1971 With Varsity team - 1975 19
