One of the most popular, well known and esteemed members of the faculty and community, he leaves behind a long record of devotion and accomplishment which will not soon be equalled. He came to Harwich High twenty-eight years ago with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Boston University and a strong desire to work with young people. It was the “old school” then, and as the town grew so too did its school enrollment. Inevitably, the athletic pro¬ gram was enlarged and there was plenty of work for Mr. Dunbar. He began teaching physical education in 1952, and coached soccer until 1971 and basketball until 1976. During his career as basketball coach he demonstrated unques¬ tioned mastery of physical training and game strategy. He demand¬ ed and received the best from his players, a talent which resulted in seeing his teams fifteen time winners of the Cape and Islands Basketball Championship. 18 Affectionately nicknamed “Charlie Harwich” by the media and his colleagues alike he was voted COACH OF THE YEAR and earned their respect as one of the best professionals in high school athletics throughout the entire state. His contributions to the youth of Har¬ wich were not limited to coaching alone. As Athletic Director he was largely responsible for the expansion of the over-all sports program, including athletics for girls. His efforts were culminated in the new track and soccer field dedicated in his name last Octo¬ ber. At the time of his retirement Mr. Dunbar held a Masters Degree in Education and was the first person in Harwich to bear the title of Athletic Director. However, he leaves Harwich High with much more than that; memories of the growth of Harwich High Scoool and of the maturation of hundreds of young men and women that he knew both as a teacher and friend. If teaching is a form of love, then Charlie Dunbar gave and earned full measure. VARSITY A CONTENDER IN STATE TOURNAMENT The 1980 edition of the Harwich Rough Riders Baseball squad experienced one of its best seasons ever. The Fred-Ebbett-coached team made the State Tournament winning its first game against West Bridgewater, but losing the next against Nantucket. The team had 9 players returning and racked up a .309 Team Batting Average. Lenny Flanigan was named to the first team All-Cape and lead the team with an impressive .450 Batting Average. Other players who contributed considerable to this championship team were Captain Matt Zelek, named to the 2nd team All-Cape, George King, Dan Brittain and Shawn Baker. Coach Ebbett looks to an even more productive team next year. The tracksmen boosted their 1979 record of one win and seven losses to a fine six wins and three losses and missed the Cape and Islands title by only three defeats, two to Nauset and one to Martha’s Vineyard. Harwich runners also set numerous individual records. Sophomore Jeff Gomes set a two mile record with a time of 10:35. Joe Thibert, in his first year on the squad, set the mile record at 4:44. Jim Supple carved his name in the 440, at 52 seconds flat, and the 880, at 2:02. Newcomer Randy Nunes spirited a record 42:09 in the 330 low hurdles. Finally the 4X110 relay team of Matt Barry, Jim Supple, Peter Kelly and Brad Kelly repeatedly shattered Cape and Islands records. Coming off the high of the record-breaking 1980 season, Coach O’Leary and the HHS trackmen look to the 1981 schedule with enthusiastic confidence. First row: J. Ritz, P. Kelly, J. Supple, B. Kelly, R. Nunes, M. Croteau, B. Bonatt, D. Bachand 2nd row: Coach O’Leary, K. Duran, R. Comeau, R. Dennison, D. Gonsalves, J. Gomes, K. Bresnahan, M. Barry, P. Fehrnstrom, R. Cushing, M. Pena, S. Wikstrom 36 GIRLS DOMINATE FIELD EVENTS - NEED MORE SPEED The 1980 HHS Girls track team had a decent season but Nauset once again came out on top. The girls, as is their fashion, remained dominant in the field events but lacked the necessary depth in running. Many individual goals were achieved by the fine women athletes with seniors Adrienne Foote reigning in the hurling of the javelin and Diane Hall in the long jump event. Distance runner, Susan McCarthy continuously set and reset records in the two mile and one in the mile. Other fine performances were given by Karyn Nelson and Sue Solimine in sprinting, Jane Simard in both the long jump and as a 4 X 110 relay runner, Maura Hanlon as a strong middle-distance runner and Joyce Livramento in the javelin and as the team’s shotputter. Coach Burns is proud of his girls and is optimistic about the upcoming season. 37 FIVE WON - SEVEN LOST The 1980 Varsity Tennis Team had one of its, “we should have done better,” seasons. With the loss of star performer Tom Tomasian who suffered a broken arm earlier in the season, the team had to look elsewhere for strong performances. One highlight in the season was when Chris Hayes defeated top cede Ed Benz. Tom Gavigan, Rich Mulcahy, Jon Thyng, and Steve Baldwin were all strong points on the team. Late in the year the team received a tremendous lift from the combo of Matt Brown and Eric Jones. With young talent coming up, coach Kot has high hopes for the future. They finished with a 3-7 record, and showed tremendous courage and dedication. Headed by Nancy Gerstley and Robin Peterson the girls showed much spirit throughout the year. Midge Osmun and Jennifer Thyng showed their skill playing doubles sometimes and other times singles. Coach Kirchener hopes to have more help from the Junior High in the coming season. The girls finished in second place with a commendable record of thirteen wins and three losses. After qualifying for their eighth consecu¬ tive state tournament, the girl’s defeated a strong Cohasset team, a team which included three boys, in their first round of the state tournament. The girls lost a close game in the quarter finals to defending state champion Apponequet. Freshman pitcher Michele Thayer was excellent in walking only two of the many batters she faced. Infielders Penny Fennell, Cheryl Heap and Patty Ryder and outfielder Sharon Hannigan were named members of the Cape and Island All-Star Team, with Patty Ryder receiving the additional honor of being an honorable mention of the Boston Globe. Coach Poore and her girls are planning on recapturing the title in the upcoming season. Front row: P. Ryder, S. Dill, T. Heap, T. Lopes, Mascot Nort, P. Fennel, R. Warren, Last row: Coach Poore, S. The team actually finished tied with Chatham for first place. Coach Bryant was very pleased with the attitude and support of his players. Peter Morgan was once again named M.V.P. Eric Noyes, Deane Reade, Tim Hall, and David Leger also had superior performances. With everyone returning Coach Bryant expects an even better record and plans to defend their title in the year ahead. HAR . Though they played only three teams all season, the girls showed outstanding spirit and dedication. Tri- Captains Karyn Nelson, Roberta Warren, and Heather Cambell all received M.V.P awards for their ability and inspiration. Sophomore Wendy Craig also showed exceptional talent. With hopes of some new competition in 1981, coach Horan is looking forward to the coming season. fee HAR OPP Whitman Hanson 0 3 Barnstable 2 1 Whitman Hanson 0 5 Barnstable 1 0 Nauset 0 1 Barnstable 2 0 Nauset 1 1 1st Row; K. If the 1979 Cape and Island champs were labeled the “Miracle Team,” what nickname would be appropriate for the 1980 Squad? Their nomenclature includes “The WPA rejects,” and the “Ragamuffins.” To most, they were “unbelievable.” Though the ladies’ unprecedented 73 game winning streak was snapped they, led by their coach, set their sights on a state championship. Few believed, many doubted. In spite of this, the believers had more to rejoice about. Bouncing back from a disappointing 8-2-2 season, it took 5 games in the state tournament before the team conquered the elusive dream of a South Sectional Division Championship. Though defeated in the State Semi-finals, this accomplishment must not be glanced at and forgotten, for no other Cape Team has ever brought this title over the bridge. Their .. journey to the final destination” was the farthest any Cape Team has ever gone. The team was paced by Senior Cape and Islands All Stars and All Cape All Stars Penny Fennell, Sharlene Gomes and Cheryl Heap. Juniors Janie Simard and Sue O’Brien were chosen as Cape and Island All Stars and O’Brien was chosen to the All Cape Squad. Heap led the Cape and Islands in scoring with 22 goals and 10 assists. In addition to the All Cape honors, Fennell and Gomes were nominated and selected to the Globe’s All Scholastic Field Hockey Team. Fennell did not stop there, she captured The Player of the Teartitle - the highest female athlete award in the state of Massachusetts. She is also the first goalie to achieve this award in the state. What do you credit their victory to? It may be the many hours of vigorous practice, their opportune mascot Nort, the soybeans and almonds or Patty’s lucky beanie. It is a certainty that their coach, Miss Cheryl Poore is the reason for their success. Field Hockey is like a machine, every part must function together, and Miss Poore is the finest mechanic in the state. She produces a winner each year, regardless of the amount of talent available to her. Miss Poore is an All-Scholastic coach. How does she feel about next year? With determination, skill, and a little help from above, next years team will be a winner. First row: Coach Poore, S.Hodgkins, T.Heap, T.Lopes, P.Fennell, Nort, S.Coleman, L.Lamon- tagne, W.Heap, Second row: S.O’Brien, S.Gomes, P.Flynn, S.McCarthy, J.Simard, C.Heap, M.thayer, L.Fernandes, S.Solomine, D.Doherty (mgr) 47 JUST MISSED STATE TOURNAMENT The Varsity Soccer team just missed qualifying for the State Tournament this season. A Disappointing loss to Chatham midway through the season ended their hopes. Despite the loss of Lance Rose (last years leading scorer) and Fullback standout Don Marini, due to a leg injury, the team had an aggressive bunch of seniors which lead the way. These seniors included Gary Souza, Adam Ferreira, Babe Barrett, Chuck Brown, and Lenny Flanigan. Gary Souza, the teams leading scorer, was named to the Cape and Islands All-Star team. Next year should prove to be exciting. With depth in all areas we could possibly give the powerhouses such as Nauset and Sandwich a little trouble. These outstanding runners had the best record (5 wins, 5 losses) that a first year team has ever achieved in Cape and Islands history. Supplementing the boys’ team were four girls: Seniors, Mara Rose and Maureen Walsh, and Juniors, Joanne McCormick and Julie Paulus. After only two years in existence. Bates squad produced three all-star runners: Jeff Gomes and Ricky Como, co-captains, and Mara Rose. Cape and Islands champion Jeff Gomes took nine out of eleven races and set a hard-earned course record of 13:26. With the majority of his team returning next season, Coach Bates feels that they have a promising chance at being crowned the 1981 Cape and Islands Cross Country Champions. First row: R. Comeau, J. The team was, as of January 26, 6-5 overall and 3-4 in league play. Matt Barry and Ernie Capozzi are the co-captains. Matt was once again the big. man with 14.8 game average and showed his authority well. Don Livramento was the key guard in handling the ball and the top outside shooter on the team. Freshamn Dave Gonsalves is another delightful addition to the squad. In any event, with many starters returning the varsity basketball team will be in the thick of things next year. A recent issue of the Cape Cod Oracle stated that Harwich was the team to beat in the Cape and Islands League. Well, they have been beaten by just about everyone. Their record of 0 wins and 11 losses says it all. The team, composed of 7 players, 3 managers, and their coach, Mr. Charles Horan, plays as a team, a single unit. On and off the court, the team is held together through deep bonds of friendship. They have tried everything from oranges, honey, soybeans, and voo-doo dolls but are still searching for that winning element. The team, paced by Senior Center Patty Flynn, who has scored 4 of Harwich’s points, (total to date is 146 points in 8 games) while leading the Cape Islands in scoring with 18.4 pts. per game, is falling short of winning its first game. Returning letterman includes Penny Fennell. Coach Horan is looking forward to a more productive season next year in terms of wins. 1st row: K. Davis, P. Flynn, N. Dunne, S. Dill, coach C. For the third consecutive year, Harwich’s Varsity Hockey team once again finds itself on top of the Cape and Islands and is also anticipating a high finish in the State Tournament. Coach Brackett, having lost ten seniors last year, must have had some concern, but his hopes and aspirations increased with the arrival of Hans Anderson from Finland and Frank Brown from Plymouth. Their skills along with banner years from senior wingers Jim Luce and Mike King have combined to create another winning attitude for Harwich. Captain Chuck Brown, in his last year, again finds himself in contention for the league’s scoring title. The responsibility of advising a class through its four years is no small task. It takes patience and sometimes courage. The fact that class advisors do this on a volunteer basis makes the person whose job it is to counsel an entire class even more remark¬ able. The Class of 1981 wishes to express its gratitude to Mr. Bryant for his efforts on our behalf. 1981 SOUNDINGS First organized in March of 1980 with Co-Editors Eric Noyes and Maura Hanlon along with Business Editor Caryn Coleman, the yearbook staff worked diligently through a jungle of very complex problems to bring this volume to its final publication. We will not soon forget the panic caused by relentless deadlines, misplaced photogra¬ phy, and the blank layout forms. There were the late after school, Saturday, and Christmas vacation work sessions and cruising the town searching for advertisers. Through all of this we discovered there is much more to journalism than any of us dreamed. “3-C Forms”, “cropping”, “bleed-offs”, “art conversion”, “reverse print”, “18-point”, “mortice”, and dozens of other new terms have now become familiar to many of us. Needless to say a book of this scope requires the help and cooperation of many people. We are grateful to Mr. Ed Lilley for much of our photography some of which will be seen on our title page, division pages, candid sections, and as ghost backgrounds in the Senior section. As has become their custom Mr. Noyes and Mr. Ebbett deserve special thanks for their assistance and understanding. We also wish to thank the entire faculty for their patience. And, of course, we particularly want to express our sincerest grati¬ tude to Mr. Davis, our advisor, without whose expert tech¬ nical knowledge, his untiring efforts and persistence, and loyal dedication, would have made this book an impossibil¬ ity. This volume follows the prize winning 1980 SOUNDINGS which in competition with over 130 New England high schools received the “Highest Achievement Award” pic¬ tured to the left. We hope our work, when judged according to their standards, will be found at least acceptable. TOP - Maura Hanlon, Eric Noyes; Co-Editors. Caryn Coleman, Business Editor. On July 14, 1980, Caroline Muschang landed in America to spend the 1980-81 school year at Harwich Jr-Sr. High School. She is residing in East Harwich with the Chipman family. How does she feel toward the school and its teachers? “It is a lot of fun.” She likes the system of choosing her own classes, as opposed to that in Belgium where the classes are pretty much predetermined. Her classes include Art and Anatomy. While here, she has become a very active member of the student body, she became most reknown for her part of Olga Latina in the Senior Class Play. At the end of June, she plans on returning to Belgium in order to further her education in Art and Interier Design. In addition to this AFS student, there is another visitor from overseas. His name is Hans Anderson from Finland. Hans resides on the coast in Turku, the third largest city in Finland. He is staying with his relatives, the Warren’s of East Harwich. Hans arrived on August 27, of last year and will stay until the end of June. The school system here is very different from that in Finland. Here he has five classes while in Finland he has twenty. “The teachers and students have been very nice to me,” says Hans “and I have enjoyed my stay very much.” Hans has played soccer and ice hockey and plans to play baseball in the spring. 109 1. Vasconcellos Ilk CLASS HISTORY In September, 1977, 120 apprehensive 13 year-olds left behind the stability and security of Junior High school to face many new challenges and situations throughout four years at Harwich High School. At our first class meeting, we were warned by Mr. Noyes, Mr. Ebbett, and our class advisor Mr. Bryant, that our four years of High School would quickly pass and recede into the dim depths of memory. Doubtful and cynical of this, we snickered and entered our first classes and study halls. We elected Mark Ballam and Chuck Brown as our President and Vice President, and set about raising funds with a successful magazine sale. Freshman Year Passed with few casualties and summer was upon us. The summer of 1978 brought us Animal House, J. Giels at„the Coliseum, and our first experience in the world of employment. Tragically, this summer was marred by the sudden and shocking deaths of Pope Paul VI and his successor, Pope John Paul I. Also tragically, the Red Sox choked in an historic playoff game and were eliminated by a Bucky Dent home run. Michael Dukakis and Ed Brooke were defeated in the elections of’78, and we were shocked by the senseless tragedy of the Jonestown, Guyana massacre. Returning to face our sophomore year, we found a more serious atmosphere awaiting us. European History, English Grammar, Geometry and Biology became part of our lives. A vain attempt to sell Christmas gift wrap was one of the more notable events of sophomore year, as was the purchase of our class rings. With Junior year came PSAT’s, SAT’s and the realization that grades were important after all, and that college preparations loomed ahead as a real, though still distant, prospect. Class officers Cheryl Heap and Chuck Brown directed fast and furious operations with the Prom committee to insure proper readiness for the long- awaited Junior Prom. Candy sales, dances, driver’s education, and the amazing successes of the Field Hockey and Hockey teams dominated the bulk of our Junior year. The Prom arrived in May with its full complement of post-Prom festivities: a good time was had by most. Shortly following the Prom we witnessed a landmark event in Harwich High School History-what was to be the last Senior Parade given in Harwich was the rambunctious display by the Class of 1980, marked memorably by the appearance of our own favorite son presidential candidate, Verne Carey. Militant mobs under the direction of the newly enthroned Ayatollah Khomeini seized the American Embassy in Teheran, held our diplomats hostage, and began their long careers as kidnappers. The Soviets invaded Afghanistan, the economy continued to fall apart, and the primary election campaign began to dominate the news. Senator Kennedy enjoyed the tremendous popularity until he entered the race with President Carter and Jerry Brown, while Ronald Reagan and George Bush vied for the No. 1 spot on the Republican ticket. Pope John Paul II graced America’s shores and gave her spirits a timely lift with his historic tour, highlighted locally by his celebration of Mass for hundreds of thousands one rainy night in Boston. A sigh of relief after finals, and we adjourned for another summer of work, concerts, beaches and general revelry. In addition to a returning Mr. Larson, awaiting our return to senior year was an unbelievable maze of SAT’s, Achievement Tests, college applications, teacher recommendations, and forms of every variety. To put it mildly, 1980 was an eventful year. The long, media dominated campaign ended in November with the election of Ronald Reagan as our fortieth President and a new Republican majority in the United States Senate. In December, an entire generation mourned as former Beatle John Lennon met a violent death at the hands of a crazed lunatic while entering his New York apartment building. Temperatures began to Plummet as New Englanders braced for what proved to be one of the coldest winters on record. On January 20, after 444days of captivity in Iran, the fifty-two United States hostages were finally released and flown to West Germany where they received a hero’s welcome. The United States anxiously awaited their return to American Soil where they were equally well received. Back at school, the Senior Class Play, You Can’t Take It With You, was a great success in November. The play and celebrations thereof at Donald Marini’s and Dave Gould’s provided an early highlight to our senior year. “Send-a- Cane” and a highly profitable Christmas Tree Sale raised the necessary funds for a banquet and-graduation. The four years we have spent at Harwich High School have been turbulent ones in the world. As many of us register for the draft on our eighteenth birthdays, we pray that our leaders will have the wisdom and the capacity to keep that turbulent world at peace. Let peace everywhere remain a high priority as we meet the challenges, bear the burdens, and welcome the joys of the future. Vin Bresnahan Jon Jones Director Tracy R.
