The Fred Ebbet-coached team barely missed qualifying for the State Tourna¬ ment on the final day of the season. The Rough Riders were a quality mixture of seasoned veterans and untried rookies up from a very successful J.V. team. Individual honors were attained by Seniors Tom Knott and Harry Vrountas, as well as Sophomore Babe Barrett, each of whom won starting All-Cape and Islands berths. Vrountas and Barrett were also named to the All-Cape squad. Coach Ebbet looks for even better success in the coming year with 9 returning players. 32 Top Left: CLANG! Top Middle: H. Barrett is lauded for an exception¬ al season 33 For the seventh consecutive season the Harwich softball team captured the Cape and Islands title. This year however, they shared the honor with arch-rival Nauset. It was a gutsy performance by the Rough Riderettes who reached the South Eastern Massa¬ chusetts Finals despite the loss of four pivotal players to graduation the previous season. Exceptional performances were given by Senior pitcher Kari Dolan and by Senior Cindy Heap, the latter of whom was named Player of the Year by the Boston Globe. The Globe also recognized Cheryl Poore as the best coach in Massachusetts this year. A concentrated effort by the Rough Riderettes made this memorable season possible, and though this year’s team will be less four seniors, the driving spirit will doubtlessly remain. 1st row: Nort, mascot. 2nd row: P. Senior Captain John Neal was successful in breaking both the high and low hurdle in addition to the pole vault records. Returning letterman Jim Supple, now holds the school record as well as the Cape and Island record in the 440 yard dash. First year participant Jeff Gomes, demonstrated his ability by capturing the two-mile record. Coach Dan O’Leary expressed his pride in the team through recognition of several athletes who showed exceptional spirit in practice as well as during the actual competition. With the return of seasoned competitors and promising newcomers, Coach O’Leary looks forward to the 1980 season with hope and anticipation. 1st row: S. Young, D. Young, J. Gomes, M. Nineteen seventy-nine proved to be an exciting and productive year for the girl’s varsity track team. Winning all but two meets, and finishing a close second in the Cape and Islands league contest, Coach Burns was justifiably proud of his athletes. Practice was grueling and painful but the work paid off in that not only were two records broken, but several team members finished the season undefeated. Sue McCarthy surpassed the two mile record, and Adrienne Foote hurled the javelin further than any girl in H.H.S. history. Adrienne was also undefeated in this event. Capt. Debbie Dolan showed her skill in the 220-yard dash by remaining unscathed throughout the year. A third athlete who often savored the fruits of victory was Sharlene Gomes, who was undefeated in regular discus competition, in addition to being Cape and Islands 880 yd. champion. Coach Burns, besides the above, made note of the extra effort by Michele Chapin in the mile, and Janie Simard in the long jump and 100-yd. dash. Losing only two competitors, Mr. Burns and the Riderettes look forward to the 1980 season, which appears promising so far as the league title goes. 1st row: J. Simard, S. McCarthy, H. Ramos, mgr., D. Hard work determination led the squad to a record year. Strong singles, led by Sophomore Tom Tomasian, and complimentary doubles teams earned the Riders five victories. Coach Kot also cited the efforts of Juniors Jon Thyng and Chris Hayes whose tenacity guided them to more than one triumph on the court. Rick Paulus and Richard Mulcahy as a pair reached the semi - finals of the Cape and Islands tournament. In the singles department, Chris Hayes ventured to the semi - finals of the same tourney. With expectations of even a greater turn out next season, Mr. Kot and the nine returning veterans are optimistic about the 1980 campaign. 1st row: T. Desrochers, T. To¬ masian, M. Ballam, K. Sporting a 6 - 5 record, the girls were continually competitive in all matches. Leading the way was Senior Martina Stabins who won the singles title in the Cape and Islands Tournament. Another noteworthy Senior was Anu Koskinen, Harwich’s YFU exchange student, who was victorious in several key matches. Maureen Hayes, also a Senior, showed her determining skill in singles as well as doubles. Returning this year will be Robin Peterson, Nancy Gerstley and Midge Osmun. The latter two formed one of the strongest doubles team on the Cape. A sophomore veteran, Julie Paulus will be expected to provide support in doubles this coming season. : ' £ i fM Hff v - Us L A 1 ;V ?! | f J m Ww U. 1st row: C. Duggan, N. Gerst¬ ley, M. Stabins, R. Coach Glen Bryant was pleased with the supportive attitude and esprit - de - corps of his squad. The spirit in which the team played and practiced was shown despite a limited league schedule of three games. Forfeits, lack of funds and a limited amount of players were commonplace throughout the year. First year coach, Charlie Floran, did an outstanding job showing the girls unique style and sense of fair play. Since more than half the competitors were newcomers, the season was as much a learning opportunity as it was an enjoyable experience. Joyce Gomes was named MVP in appreciation for her all around enthusiasm and ability. Freshman Wendy Craig and Junior Heather Campbell showed exceptional talent and adroitness for the sport. With hopes for becoming a varsity team next fall, the girls and Coach Horan are looking forward to a highly competitive 1980 season. 1 w ' Vy $ zL 1 f: feat 1 fesS IS lit . 1st row: C. Bates, W. As expected, the field hockey team once again reigned as champions in the Cape and Islands League. They achieved this feat despite the loss of six starters from the previous championship squad. This season also marked their 65th straight win in regular competition. After achieving this noteworthy goal, the team set their eyes on the State Title. This pinnacle, however, was not to be reached as Duxbury eked out a narrow victory in the State Tournament. Sharlene Gomes, Penny Fennell and Cheryl Heap were standouts, and their diligence was rewarded when all three were named to the Cape and Islands All - Star Team. In addition to this honor, goal tender Penny Fennell was named to the Boston Globe team. Sue O’Brien also merited a much deserved honorable mention in the Cape and Islands League. Miss Poore, finally receiving the recognition she deserves, was named Coach of the Year by the Globe. Beginning with grueling late summer practices, the team slowly worked themselves into top physical condition. Although they sported a 7 - 5 record, they did not perform to pre - seasons expectations. The loss of two tough decisions to Chatham and M.V. dampened the Tournament hopes of Harwich, the pinnacle of the ' 19 campaign was a last second victory over tournament bound Sandwich Blue Knights. Coach Glen Rose was pleased with the heart and dedication of his young squad. Due to injuries and absentees though, he felt the team seldom was at full strength. Individual honors were won by Joe Thibert, who was named M.V.P. Lance Rose commanded team scoring honors. Next year will prove difficult with the loss to graduation of 13 Seniors, but a returning solid nucleus should guide the team through. 1st row: S. Baker, L. Flanigan, M. Ross, J. Foster, L. Rose, G. This does not sound that impressive, but it is the best that any introductory team has ever done in the history of the league. Even League Champion Cape Cod Tech, failed to win a single meet in their opening season. Coach Don Bates did an excellent job with the limited squad he had to work with. Senior Jim Supple took 1st place in all three victories and also finished in 1st place for Harwich in all meets. Senior Chris Hayes and Junior Peter Kelley plus Sophomores Jeff Gomes and Rick Comeau, all turned in fine season performances. Jim Supple took M.V.P. Honors for his truly superb season. The team strives for perfection next year and hopes to battle for the League Championship. 1st row: J. Gomes, M. Russell, R. Comeau, V. Bresnahan 2nd row: P. Kelley, J. Supple, C. Hayes, S. This allowed for much playing time for numerous underclassmen and this valuable experience will be a great aid for the seasons to come. The team was anchored by Jr. center Matthew Barry, who again showed why he is considered one of the top players on the Cape. He sported over a fourteen points per game average. Sr. Brad Kelly provided much leadership along with a twelve points per game average. Coach Rose looks forward to next year with the return of many experienced players who hopefully will put Harwich back on the upper echelon of the Cape and Islands League. 1st row: E. Capozzi, B. The girls’ basketball team entered the 79-80 season with high hopes. Their record was not as good as expected but throughout the year the squad exemplified team spirit and hustle. Led by new-comer Carol LaCross and senior veteran Adrienne Foote the girls had a respectable 7-9 rocord. Highlights included a midseason victory over rival Nauset and a couple of close losses to champion Martha’s Vineyard. It was a young squad and with the expected return of many underclassmen the girls hope to vie for the league title once again in the coming years. 1st row: K. Thayer, manager, C. Heap, P. Fennell, C. Try telling that to the Harwich hockey team who again reigned at the top of the Cape and Island League with a 13-1-1 record. Consistency and team work marked this squad as they rarely had an off night. Defense was a question mark going into the season but the young players rose to the challenge to make it one of the team’s strong points. Captain Joe Thibert more than once dazzeled the opposition with rink long rushes and showed why many consider hime to be one of the most talented players on the Cape. Junior center, Chuck Brown was leading the team, as well as the league, in scoring entering the final game. Senior, George King, was second on the team in scoring, while also being one of the league’s more aggressive performers. Any good hockey team needs good goal tending and Harwich was fortunate enough to have a spectacular goal tender in the person of John Hodgkins. He topped the league in goals against average and also had the most shutouts. The team looks forward to post season play and hopes to bring home the State Championship. 1st tow: J. Thibert, T. They received new uniforms this year, and their blue and gold colors were a striking addition to the Cranberry Harvest Festival Parade this September. Working under adverse condi¬ tions, the band has done remarkably well. After a great perfor¬ mance in the annual Winter Concert, the group is now rehears¬ ing songs for the Spring Concert. In ad¬ dition to the concerts, a record of last year’s band music was re¬ leased just recently. The first one ever! After their recording debut, their perfor¬ mance in the 1979 Seafest Parade was taped and aired on Channel 11. 1st row: D. Chipman, M. Colthart, P. Ryder, K. Thayer, M. Paterno, T. Hanlon, L. The orchestra under Mr. An¬ derson’s direction, has done a fine job this year, especially in the Winter Concert. Eight industrious members; Holly Thistle, Theresa Hanlon, Mark Ballam Jay Brooks, Mike Dunford, Mike Kopp, Lauren Stevenson and Eric Barca audi¬ tioned and were accepted for the S.E. Dis¬ trict Music Festival! Two of the chosen, Theresa Hanlon and Michael Kopp, were also accepted in the Allstate Orchestra. Both are great honors for any high school musician. Furthermore, there is a Percus¬ sion Ensemble where the students are al¬ lowed to expand their musical abilities, not just in performance, but also in arranging and writing. Orchestra 1st row: M. As we go to press, the Chorus has plans for an exchange concert with the High School Chorus from Parsippany, New Jersey. To earn money for the trip, the Chorus has sponsored its annual Pot Luck Supper, a candle sale, a square dance, and there are still more activities to come! Under the direction of Mrs. Claire Stevens, the Chorus enjoys a variety of music, and, for the first time, there are Chorus uniforms! In addition to the numerous activities the entire Chorus participates in, there is also the largest Madrigal group ever this year! The Madrigal group specializes in performing seventeenth century music. First Row: H. Ramous, J. Clapp, H. Thistle, T. Chipman, M. Troncoso - Duran, T. Hanlon, H. Perry, M. Pina, E. Hanlon, M. Un¬ der the guidance of Mr. Wainwright, the members sponsored a booth in the Cranberry Havest Festival as well as a dance for the school. New A.F.S. friends visiting this year are Monica “Kika” Troncoso Duran from Cauguanes, Chile, and Suvi Wikstrom arriving from Tusku, Fin¬ land. Along with encouraging for¬ eign students to visit here, A.F.S. sent its first Winter program student abroad! WINGS OF HARWICH Enjoy soaring into the “wild blue yonder?” If so, this club is for you! The Wings of Har¬ wich, along with their advisor, Mr. Wain¬ wright, dedicate themselves to the joy of flying, and to help others enjoy it. Every year, the club sponsers “Fly - Days”, when every¬ body interested in planes, or just looking for “something different” to pass an afternoon, can come for a plane ride over the Cape. These “Fly - Days” help to raise money for their many activities and trips. Last year, the “Wings” visited Washington, D.C. and the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum — where will they travel to this year? Two of the members, Mike Solimine and Andrew Walk¬ er, have such an interest in flying that they have received their Pilot’s Licenses! It’s been a fun year for the “wings!” 64 1st row: G. Young, J. King - Jim Callahan Flower - Chrysanthemum Queen ' s Court: Patty Ryder, Joyce Colors - Lavender, Yellow and White Gomes, Lynn Flanagan, Michelle Steeg- stra. The Junior Prom is an event that is typically characterized by a certain “high anxiety” on the part of the students participating. Last year’s prom proved to be a success due to the thoughtful concern of those involved. Their anxiousness in making sure the gala event ran smoothly was definitely a reason for its success. There was no particular main ingredient that made the prom a night to remember, but rather a variety of elements influencing the final outcome. The regal atmosphere combined with the fact of knowing one was with close friends helped to generate a feeling of intense unity among the class. For everyone, it turned out to be a memorable and enjoyable evening. , Opposite Page Upper Right - J. Chase. Middle - P. Ryder, J. Gomes, J. Hall, J. Callahan, L. Flanigan, M. Steegstra. Finally released from the restrictions of Junior High, we entered H.H.S. in September 1976 apprehensive about new challenges but looking forward to new freedoms. In our first class meeting we were introduced to our Advisors, Mr. Kot and Mr. Zabelski. By the end of that initial gathering, most of us felt we had little hope of surviving the four complex years to come. We elected class officers Chris Fehrnstrom and Matt Zelek, president and vice president respectively, to provied us with some stability. Nationally, life was confused as always. Following a low-key Bicentennial celebration, Harwich held its First Annual Cranberry Harvest Festival, which culminated in a lavish parade. In November a dark horse candidate from Georgia, James Earl Carter, tri¬ umphed at the polls and made “born-again” a watchword of the Seventies. Congressman Wayne Hays’ secretary, Elizabeth Ray, disclosed the fact that she earned her wages without typing or filing. Patty Hearst was convicted on bank robbery charges. Howard Hughes died. Viking I beamed home the first pictures ever from the surface of Mars. Back at the school, disco began to take hold although Foreigner, Fleetwood Mac and Billy Joel were much apparent. The audito¬ rium was condemned for lack of proper ventilation. We completed a successful magazine drive which earned $1200 for the class. The varsity basketball team won the Cape and Islands Cham¬ pionship and went to the State Tournament for the first time since 1969. A jukebox appeared in the cafeteria. June sneaked up behind us and we adjourned to summer jobs and a much-needed vacation. The following semester as sophomores we were a little better prepared for the shock. Violence and mayhem were everywhere: the worst aviation disaster in history took almost 600 lives, and the Son of Sam terrified New York. Punk rock, an anarchistic British element, sur¬ faced briefly but failed to take hold in this country. Star Wars packed them in. Roots and Saturday Night Live kept us glued to the tube. Mopeds appeared in various garages, and inflation once more reared its ugly head. We elected officers Jim Learned and Joe Thibert and held a candy sale that Scene from “Saturday Night Live” Mid-air collision over L.A. proved to be very suc¬ cessful. Some of us grew more accutomed to recreational drugs of much-debated effect. The Class of ’78 passed into history and we wondered if ever we would equal their spirit. That summer, lunatic as it was with Animal House and Coliseum concerts, was marred by the sudden death of Dwayne Ennes in a motorcycle accident. We were completely shocked. Two Popes also passed away, and the second Vatican conclave elected a non-Italian prelate for the first time in centuries. The world’s first Atlantic crossing by balloon was achieved. We entered our junior year aware of our loss but confident of the future. What a time it was. Dances, Red River keg parties, Spruce Road and the Prom combined to make this a social year that most of us will never forget. We appreciated the Cars, the J. Geils Band and especially Blue Oyster Cult as not only music but, at times, a background to our lives. Toga parties were in vogue and of course H.H.S. had its own, covered in detail by the Cape Cod Times. We worked on our first term papers and spent many lonely hours sequestered in the stacks. A lot of us suffered through Driver Ed. and were rewarded by that first pink slip that meant so much. The Ice Hockey team soared to a 15-0-0 record only to be defeated in an incredible game withD-Y at the Coliseum. To the shock and dismay of us all a senior, alias Mark Pecorne, was revealed to be a “narc” (narcotics agent). The motivation behind this was questioned by virtually the “ Son of Sam ” before trial. entire student body. Warm weather brought Frisbee and relaxation to our minds. Our Junior Prom, while marred by mishap, was still a success by most people’s standards. Parties afterwards, at Bill Crosby’s Jim Supple’s and Walter Mason’s, were memorable for the very fact that most of us are uncertain just what transpired on that rainy night. Our senior year at this writing has yet to end but it has already proven chaotic. So far, several dances have given us some diversion from our labors. Many squirm in uncertainty as they await notification from colleges. We sighed in relief as Skylab managed to fall without starting any wars or killing any¬ one. The Shah was deposed and replaced by a gumpy old ascetic who, if he contin¬ ues at his current rate, will soon surpass his predecessor’s record of executions. At this moment, fifty Americans are held captive in Iran as they have been for one hundred days. The Russian invasion of Af¬ ghanistan has reminded us all that we live under the constant threat of nuclear anni¬ hilation. The world watches as gold prices rise and plummet with no apparent pat¬ tern. American is is not the strongest na¬ tion on Earth. We are are not in a recession. The people of the U.S., and of the world, are confronted with a current scenario in which their faith in practically everything must be reexamined. We, the first class of the 1980’s will carry the burden of problems we never made and situations no one can foresee. With God’s help and our own initiative, we may yet be the harbingers of a new era of peace on Earth. The Ayatullah Khomeini ‘Mark Pecorne” — old friends are never forgotten. by John Foster Two world leaders, Pope John Paul 2nd greeted by President Carter. Mr. Zabielski Mr. Kot Through four turbulent years our class has struggled with magazine sales, candy sales, hat sales, Christmas tree sales, dances, banquets and proms. From our first class meeting as Freshman until receiving our diplomas at graduation Mr. Kot and Mr. Zabielski were always there when we needed them. The class of 1980 wishes to take this opportunity to express its gratitude for a job well done. Senior Class Officers: Amy Hall, Secretary; Jana Sokale, President; Jim Supple, Vice- President, Joanne McKenna, Treasurer. 116 1980 SOUNDINGS Jana Sokale, Managing Editor. From our first organization meeting in March, nearly a year ago, to the present writing, now February, we have learned that the design, layout, and financing of a book of this scope is fr aught with a myriad of problems. The solu¬ tions to these have been a result of the cooperative endeav¬ ors of many people and we would like to acknowledge the invaluable assistance of the following: Mr. Russell Noyes and Mr. Frederick Ebbett whose understanding time and time again helped us through the dilemma of meeting pub¬ lisher deadlines; the entire H.H.S. Faculty who suffered through many unavoidable class interruptions without com¬ plaint. We especially wish to thank Mr. Edward R. Lilley for his photography, much of which was done at his own expense. To Mrs. Dorothy Griffith goes our thanks for her expert care with our funds and her ability to come up with a “true balance” whenever asked. As Seniors with very little journalistic experience we are now fully appreciative of many of the technical aspects involved in producing a formal publication, most of which were either never considered by us to be of any importance or were taken for granted. We are ready now to submit our last copy and with is satisfy our last and final deadline. For us it has been an enlightening experience. The end result is for the reader to judge. K.
