Mrs. Cooper is now living a peaceful but indus¬ trious life at her home in Orleans. She is energetically involved with her interest in Botany and is busy with her new arts and crafts busi¬ ness. We wish her continued health and happiness. She will long be remembered by all of us. Mrs. Farham was the first secre¬ tary at HHS. Before her retire¬ ment in September 1978 she had been working in the principals office and later in the guidance office a total of nearly twenty years. Now working in a more peace¬ ful environment, she is remembered by all us here for her quick smile and ready wit. We will miss her but wish her well. —— :• m H H Mr. Neal Todd, Superintendent of Schools School Committee: F. Ballam, N. Clapp, R. Gomes, chmn., C. Black- more, H. Gabriel Russel K. Noyes, Principal Frederick Ebbett, Vice-Principal Dear Graduates: To Be successful and happy it is necessary to (1) face your problems head on and resolve them quickly, (2) deal with people honestly and sincerely, (3) treat people with dignity and respect, (4) honor the opinions of others even though they may differ from yours, (5) seek help when you need it, (6) be loving and considerate of others, and (7) have faith and trust in people. A few other thoughts to remember - “The most important single ingredient in the formula of success is knowing how to get along with people.” “Before you can score, you must first have a goal.” “It is not who is right, but what is right that is important.” Theodore Roosevelt Greek Proverb Thomas Huxley The best of luck and life to all of you. it Russel K. They captured the Cape Islands title for the third consecutive year. In addition, the team won the first three games of the state tournament, making them finalists for the S. E. Mass. Championship. Unfortunately, due to two controversial calls, the Riderettes lost the fourth game against Silver Lake. They do, how¬ ever, have the distinguished rec¬ ord of 17 - 0. Undoubtedly, the team would not have come this far without the excellent coaching of Cheryl Poore. Four members of the Harwich team were chosen for the Cape Island’s All-star team’s first string and three for honorable mention. Pam Covert and Kari Kolan were also chosen for the Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-star teams, while Kare Dolan was given the most deserved title of Player of the Year. For the first time the Cape players were given the recognition they earned. Although the team is losing seven seniors we are hopeful for another winning season next year. bottom row- P. It was basically a re¬ building year for Coach Glen Rose with seven re¬ turning lettermen. The returning veterans were seniors Doug Martin, Marty Moran, Jay Gomes and Co- Captian Harry Vrountas and juniors Jim Learned, Danny Brittian and Co-Captian Chris Fehrstrom. The First year players were a great asset to the team; especially A.F.S. student Julien Van Hoek of Belgium, leading scorer with 20 goals. Julien Van Hoek and Harry Vrountas were voted to the Cape Islands all-star team this year by the League Coaches. Dispite several fine individual performances, Coach Mange- linkx attributes most of this to the delayed start of the season due to bad weather. The beginning was hopeful with a 81 to 32 scrimmage win over Tech. But the team never seemed to be able to overcome rivals Nauset and Martha’s Vineyard. Some of the notable individual performances were by John Neal with a school record breaking 11’ 1” polevault, Mike McCormic with a 53.1 sec. quarter mile and by the quarter mile relay team (a first in Harwich) which won at the Cape Island meet. Dispite losing quite a few members Coach Mangelinkx is hopeful for a good season with a new track and several returning lettermen. The team started off with 5 senior captians but due to in¬ jury Nancy Bushey was unable to participate. The re¬ maining seniors Barbie Callahan, Kim Gomes, Donna Burnham and Leslie Vasconcellos contributed much team effort and spirit which the rest of the team admired. At the end of the season the girls won more meets that any other league team, but were only able to pull a 2nd in the Cape Island meet. In this meet the 4 x 110 relay broke the Cape Island League Record. Coach Burns and his track team hope for an even better team this year with the new track and to regain the Cape Island championship. S. Gomes, D. Burnham Bottom row L to R, M. Hanlon, D. Burnham, K. They were defeated by Barnstable 5-13 in semi finals. Over all, they had a good season due to hard work. Amy MacDonald, pitcher, leading vote getter for Cape All- Stars, and Cindy Reynolds, catcher, and Kari Dolan, first baseman, also made All-Star positions. They hope for a very successful year to come. The team was plagued by errors throughout the season, which ended any hopes the team had for post-season activity. Some of the bright spots on the team were filled by senior co-capt. Steve Gonsalves, and three- year veteran Mike Ross. They were both selected by the coaches of Eastern Mass, to the E. Mass division 1 All-star team to represent the Cape Islands League. Dispite a frustrat¬ ing year the team post¬ ed three players on the Cape Island All-Star team Steve Gonsalves in center field, Mike Ross in Left field, and junior first baseman Harry Vrountas. Coach Fred Ebbett said, hopefully, “Now that we have learned from our mistakes we should be a stronger team and a contender for the championship in ’79” VARSITY Bottom row L to R, T. Brooks, H. Against overwhelming odds the boys worked very hard and, de¬ spite the score in many games, the opposition knew they were not going to have it all their own way. This was true particularly in one exciting double overtime game with Sandwich. While it may be true that “it’s not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game that is important”, Coach Rose will lose only three Seniors’ to graduation and winning next year may become more the rule than the exception. In any event, our boys will be in the thick of it and the opposi¬ tion may have cause to look back at ’78-’79 wi th some longing. It was a bit different this year. After losing three senior starters and Laura McCarthy, who could not participate because of a previous knee injury, Coach Larry Zabielski had a fairly young team with little varsity experience. Made up of five seniors, three juniors, and three sophmores, they did, however, give a good account of themselves. What they lacked in experience they attempted to make up in determination. The team began the season with a fantastic upset over a stronger, much vaunted Nauset team. Throughout the season, however, they seemed to meet with ill luck and misfortune. There were a few very close losses in which victory could have gone either way. When all is considered, the girls did not do too badly, and we look forward to next year with hope and anticipation. ) Back row: Coach Larry Zabielski, Sharlene Gomes, Laura Cotell, Cheryl Heap, Debbie Bonatt, Anu Koskinen, Midge Osmun, and Kim Thayer. The Rough Riders wound up the regular season beating Nauset 6 - 2 on the afternoon of February 19th. They posted an over-all record of 15 straight wins, no losses, and no ties. This achievement has never before been accomplished by a club in this area. As we go to press they are scheduled to enter the challenge for Tournament championship honors in post season play. The season was highlighted by many memorable events and the attainment of several new records. Bill Crosby fin¬ ished First in Cape and Islands scoring while Jack Brooks finished first in the over-all Cape records. They were both offensively instramental in making this one of the best sports teams to come out of Harwich in over a decade. The first 100th goal by the Blue and Gold was recorded during the 11th game of the season by sophomore Chuck Brown. In the net for our young mostly Junior team were two of the three Senior players, Mike Hayes, who compliled the best average in the league, and John Reece who was dependable and sturdy whenever called upon. Although Junior John Hodgkins didn’t see much action in the cage, he will definitely be a major factor next year. Behind the boards was the veteran coach of five years, Bob Brackett who was “more pleased with this year’s club than any other team I’ve coached.’’ It was, no doubt, easy for the fans to understand why. While on her stay in Harwich she resided with the Martin Moran Family. Dur¬ ing her year at Harwich High she participated in Varsity Soccer and Varsity Basketball. Marina said that her village in New Zealand is smaller than Har¬ wich but she likes the way teachers are so friendly towards the student body. Her school is all’girl so the co-ed system here is new to her. When Marina leaves the U.S. she plans to take a computer pro¬ gramming course in New Zealand. Anu Koskinen is from Espoo, Finland. During her stay here in Harwich she lived with the David Thyng Family. Anu played Varsity Basketball and enjoyed tennis. When questioned what her impression of Harwich was, she replied, “it’s a nice litter town.” Anu’s town in Fin¬ land is larger than Harwich. At her school the students are required to take more courses than students at Harwich High, also there are not as many electives offered to them. When Anu returns home her plans are to finish high school and will attend college. Julian Van Hoeck is from Rillar, Belgium. He is living at the home of the Albert Crocker Family. As a member of the Varsity Soccer Team, Julian holds the record for most goals scored in the history of Harwich soccer. Julian liked Harwich and said he had a good year in the U.S. When he returns to Belgium his future plans are to finish high school and become a physical education teacher. 101 SENIOR FAVORITES Favorite Food - Pizza Favorite Drink - Beer Favorite Class - Government Favorite Movie - Animal House Favorite Authors - John Steinbeck Kurt Vonnegut Favorite T.V. Watergate, the Arab oil embargo, and the Vietnam conflict were behind us. Jim Rice, John Neal, Danette Hathaway, and Cindy Heap were elected class officers. They worked with our class advisors, Mr. Thompson and Mr. Dwyer, to guide us in our first fund raising project. We bit our nails as the Red Sox battled the Cincinnati Reds in the World Series-and lost. At school, both the varsity soccer and softball teams played in the state tournament. Our sophomore year commenced in the middle of the Bicentennial. Harwich hosted the first Cranberry Harvest Festival, highlighted by a parade commemorating our country’s 200th birthday. A little known Georgia governor, James Earl Carter, became President, defeating the only unelected executives in our country’s history-Gerald Ford and Nelson Rockefeller. We enjoyed another successful sports season in ’76, sending Cape and Island champion teams to the state tourna¬ ment in field hockey, softball, and boys’ basketball. As juniors, we entered the world of the upperclassmen. Two new officers, Kari Dolan and Rick Paulus, joined Danette and Cindy to lead our class in another candy sale, a dance, and a unique carnation sale. The ice hockey team qualified for state tournament competition for the first time in 1978. Once again, our field hockey and softball teams clinched the Cape and Islands title. Girls basketball had a spectacular season, capturing the Eastern Mass, championship in state competition. During the winter of our junior year, the nation was hit with the infamous “Blizzard of ’78”. The eastern seaboard was paralyzed by record breaking snowfall. On the night of May 12, at the Sheraton Eastham, we held the event that united our class as we prepared for our fourth and final year-the Junior Prom. We began our senior year anticipating the best year of our high school career. Our country was in the throes of uncertainty. The massacre and mass suicides in Guayana and the assassination of the mayor of San Fransisco shocked the nation. As a result of the November elections, Governor Dukakis and Senator Brooke were defeated. Internation¬ ally, the Arab-Israeli peace talks, rioting in Iran, the devaluation of the dollar, and the S.A.L.T. talks headed the news. The field hockey won the Cape and Island title and advanced to the finals of the South Sectional Tournament. Kari Dolan and Pam Covert were named to the all-star teams of the Boston Globe and Herald. Kari earned the ad¬ ditional honor of being named Player of the Year. Major events of our senior year are the senior class play, the Christmas tree sale, and the senior banquet. After graduation, many of us hope to enter college. Others will join the work force or the armed services. We enter a world of turmoil and confusion with the hope that somehow we will help bring some reason into our chaotic universe. I r J C- Ji.lmY ' CU ' rJU-AitSC.
