Harwich High School Harwich, Massachusetts SOUNDINGS 75 2 TABLE OF CONTENTS FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION 17 ACTIVITIES 33 SPORTS 39 UNDERCLASSMEN 57 SENIORS 79 ADVERTISING 109 3 “The future is purchased by the present” Samuel Johnson 10 11 14 15 . . . but I want no honors, I have no wish to be a leader, I want only to share what I’ve found, to show those horizons out ahead for us all.” J. L. Seagull ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT Life in the modern community is becoming more and more impersonal. The individual has only to go a few blocks from his home to become a total stranger - seeing only people he does not know and who do not know him. When he does anything, even if he does it out of his deepest sentiments, its effects seem to be lost in space and time. For example, charity has become impersonal. An individual gives money to an agency which in turn gives it to those in need. But the donor is unaware, save in an abstract sense, of the consequences of his giving. This example of the impersonal abstract character of the effects of what an individual does can be multiplied a hundred¬ fold by instances from daily activities. Under these circumstances, we grow up in a network of impersonal relationships in which the chance of identifying with activities permeated with human warmth is almost zero. Even models of the good life have all but vanished in this impersonal network of human association; at best they are abstractions. MR. NEAL TODD As you leave the familiar surroundings of Harwich High School and enter the impersonal world of today remember that the prime object of your education was not to equip you to find your way with minimum pain and maximum pleasure through the labyrinthine maze of society but to help you construct for yourself a humane, humanistic self. Go forth and interject your personality into the world of tomorrow. Restore human kindness in any small way you can and help bring our country closer to the greatness and humaness our forefathers died for. N. Todd SCHOOL COMMITTEE L to R: Robert Hall, Rev. Charles Monbleau, Chmn., Chester Powers, Richard Gomes, Mrs. Frederick Crowell. 18 PRINCIPAL HARWICH HIGH MR. RUSSELL K. NOYES The four needs of youth and adults are love, understanding, recognition and new experiences. Always make every effort to fulfill those needs in people around you, especially your children to come. If you are successful in doing so, you can be reasonably sure that you, your children and others who have been affected by you in a positive manner will lead happy and contented lives. Having been in school only a few days we were shocked by the Attica Prison riots and the poor handling of the situation by the then governor of New York, Nelson Rockefeller. Mr. Rockefeller is now the Vice-President of the United States. Nearly a year later in Munich, Germany at the Olympic Games where the prevailing mood was that of fraternity, eight Arab guerillas forced their way into the Olympic Vil¬ lage and murdered eleven Israeli hostages. This did nothing to soothe the tension of the Arab-Israeli conflict which has erupted into war numerous times during the last few years. The Middle East is not the only place we ' ve seen fighting. Throughout the last four years blood has flown on all the major continents except North America. In Asia there is fighting in Bangla Desh and the war in Vietnam continues on eternally. In Europe the bitter fight goes on between Catho¬ lics and Protestants in Northern Ireland. In Africa the colo¬ nial wars that have bloodied it over the last century continues with no end in sight, and in Chile there was the violent over¬ throw of Salvadore Allende ' s government. Sept. 1972 We began our Sophomore years in the thick of a national election. President Nixon ' s opposition in his bid for re-elec¬ tion was a young liberal named George McGovern. Senator McGovern chose as his running mate Senator Thomas Eagle- ton only to drop him from the ticket because of an illness he had had earlier in life. As a replacement he chose Sargeant Shriver. Senator McGovern lost the election to President Nixon in the largest landslide ever in a presidential election. Sept. 1973 As Juniors we all became acquainted with what was destined to become a household word, ' ' Watergate. ' ' This word will be looked upon with scorn as long as this Republic stands. Watergate is the greatest political scandal this coun¬ try has ever seen. President Nixon had supposedly authorized the break-in of the Watergate building where the Democratic Headquarters was located. Committees from both Houses of Congress were set up to look into this matter. To add to the humility of the administration, President Spiro Agnew was indicted in Federal Court on criminal charges resulting from his Governorship in Maryland and was forced to resign from office. Gerald Ford was chosen by Mr. Nixon as a replace¬ ment. Sept. 1974 While we were on vacation from our Jr. year, President Nixon was forced to resign from office due to public and political pressures arising from the Watergate scandal. Ger¬ ald Ford became President in August 1974 and chose a very controversial figure in Nelson Rockefeller as his Vice-Presi- 106 dent. President Ford became the first unelected president ever and when Rockefeller was sworn in, they became the first completely unelected ticket in the history of the United States. Unfortunately for Mr. Nixon, the good that men achieve seldom lives on after them while the bad is remembered for¬ ever. He never won any awards for his efforts to gain univer¬ sal peace. He ended the Vietnam War and lifted the hearts of Americans who had been frustrated by nine years of this con¬ flict. He painted a warm picture in the reunion of Prisoners of War with their families. He also opened the door to the People ' s Republic of China which had been closed for thirty years. Possibly his greatest achievement though was the for¬ mation of the Detente with the Soviet Union. This perhaps in future years will prove to be the backbone of world peace. The past four years, like the four thousand that preceded them, brought many changes in fashion. We generally thought that the in” thing was to let your hair grow but we ' ve now found that the thing to do is ' ' streaking ' ' or run¬ ning around without any clothes. In Athletics we ' ve seen the formation of new professional leagues in football and hockey to challenge the old established leagues and, after failing in his first attempt, Mohammed Ali is again champ. The years 1971-1975 were also strange years economi¬ cally. Last year the Arab Oil Embargo on the United States caused a shortage of petroleum products which in turn caused prices to soar. When the Embargo was lifted, they asked so much for the petroleum that prices did not go down. Now, the United States which was once thought to be the economic leader of the world has fallen behind the Arabs in that cate¬ gory. Last year we also had a meat shortage which caused prices to soar even higher. It seems that inflation has struck everywhere. When prices are high, people tend to become thrifty and buy less causing overproduction. This is the case in the United States. With overproduction came layoffs which in turn, raised the unemployment to its highest rate in years. During the middle of our Senior year, the violence, in nearby South Boston, over busing to racially integrate the schools there has brought the city to national attention. Meanwhile the Class of 75 which had started off with a car wash back in their Freshman year and had finished off with the Senior Class Play, Love Rides the Rails, prepared for graduation. Graduation for us will be a birth into adulthood and with many of us being able to vote, perhaps we can help set our country on its feet again. In recent years the United States has taken the lead in pro¬ moting universal brotherhood. Perhaps this will be an incen¬ tive to the class of 75 and as we become adults we shall set in the tradition of America and treat all men with respect as our equals and our brothers. 107 108 BOOSTERS JOHN Z. Todd Corn M CV1CW Seating fi« drums for Harwich Senior Class play The Harwich High School Senior Class play, Love Rides the Rails, opened with an authoritative di ' um roll that brought the packed house to attention. The musicians, players, singers, and dancers took it from there, and for 2 1 2 hours the capacity crowd roared with laughter, booed and hissed the villains, and applauded the heroes with uninhibited enthusiasm. Yes, the Harwich High School Senior Play hit the local big-time last weekend! The classic melodrama style was embellished by the songs arranged and conducted by Richard Rubino and played smoothly and unobtrusively by musicians from the High School Orchestra, while a bevy of soloists created the mood of the dance hall era. The show was imaginatively, flam¬ boyantly, and thoroughly directed by Ted Tischler. Kathy Hanlon as the victimized saintly widow had all the theatrical moves of the pure-hearted, yet in her sympathy-evoking role her sense of comic timing was ever-present. And her song in the third Act, My Dad ' s the Engineer, was nearly the show-stopper. The hero and heroine, Todd Zeleck and MaryAnn Tagliaferri, acted the gamut of purity, degreda- tion, and good will triumph over evil. BfijS I he villainous team of Mark Leach as Simon Darkway and Edmund McCormick as Dirk Sneath plied their evil trade with every dastardly trick in the book. Mike Marsh played the hero ' s true and stalwart companion in a superb performance of understate¬ ment — some of his one-word lines brought near-hysterical laughter from the audience. The stage belonged to Gwen Marceline as Carlotta Cortez, whether she was reclining in her boudoir garbed in red satin or belting out a song in her Paradise Cafe. Gwen ' s facial expressions and energy had the audience anticipating her every move. The crew of the Dennis-Yar- mouth-Harwich and Western Railroad, with Brian Carrier as the engineer, showed disci¬ pline and freedom of move¬ ment in their several crowd scenes. There was no shuffling of feet or bumping into each other-unusual in a high school play. The second act Cafe scene was stopped dead in its tracks when out of every possible entrance twenty or more Can-Can girls burst onto the scene and professionally executed a masterpiece of choreography, directed by Mrs. Valerie Buck. The technical side of the show was flawless. The costumes were bright, authentic, and well-fitting. Introduction of a spot-light enhanced the sparse but effective and mobile sets — right down to the engine that moved across the stage in the last scene. Those who remember and love melodrama and songs like She ' s Only a Bird in a Gilded Case had a real treat last weekend. The orchestra was exciting! The actors were exciting! The singers and dancers were exciting! Love Rides the Rails made theatrical history in Harwich High School.
