We had a new principal, Mr. Noyes and were caught up in a nation¬ al election. Although our minds were young, we were still able to recognize some of the problems our country was facing, the Vietnam conflict and pollu¬ tion of our air and water being the biggest. The nation had been shocked earlier in the year when two prominent states¬ men, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated. Ra¬ cial violence had erupted in the cities during the summer and student unrest was prevalent on the college campuses. In this vein, Richard M. Nixon, with Spiro Agnew as Vice-President, was elected President on promises to end the Vietnam conflict and fight pollution. Hubert Humphrey, the Democratic candidate and George Wallace, a third party candidate were both defeated. The year ended though, with a former promise being fulfilled. Apollo 8, launched from Cape Kennedy, circled the Moon on Christmas day and re¬ turned safely three days later. 1969 — While the sophomore class was tucked away on the Cape conducting car washes, violence became a way of life for many people in the world. Nigerian troops attacked and starved the tiny break away state of Biafra. Riots and fierce gun battles dramatized the Irish Catholic minority’s demands for equality in Protestant Northern Ireland. While Nixon began reducing troop levels in Vietnam, charges were leveled at the Army of a massacre at My Lai, Vietnam. Consequently, Lt. William Calley was tried and court-martialed. Closer to home, Senator Edward Kennedy drove his car off Chappaquidick Bridge on Martha’s Vineyard killing Mary Jo Kopechne. On the bright side, for the first time in history, the United States landed two men on the moon in July. And one of the largest and best rock shows was held on a farm near Woodstock, New York, with such guests as Jimi Hen¬ dricks, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Sly and the Family Stone, and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young. 1970 — In 1970, we began our junior year with a newly instituted English program and ended it with a nostalgia dance. Meanwhile, US forces were in¬ vading Loas and Cambodia, in order that more US forces could withdraw safely. Demonstrations increased after the invasion of Cambodia, which re¬ sulted in four deaths caused by National Guardsmen on the Kent State Cam¬ pus in Ohio. In Pakistan, one of man’s worst natural disasters occurred. A giant tidal wave swept across the lowlands of East Pakistan, killing thousands. While they were starving, the juniors were boycotting the food from the cafe¬ teria. (A truly ironic year.) 1972 — With our senior play, ' Teahouse of the August Moon,” a smashing success, and a money making Christmas tree sale behind us, the senior class of 1972 looks forward to take its place in adult society. The eighteen year olds now have the constitutional right to vote and we should all look forward to this privilege. A new nation was born in the wake of the India-Pakistani war, formally East Pakistan, it is now called Bangladesh. While a violent earthquake from Cali¬ fornia s San Andrea s fault rocked buildings and wrecked highways killing many, thousands rocked to the sound of the rock opera, Jesus Christ Super- star. Finally — in 1972 Richard Nixon became the first United States President to visit Red China in an era to become ' Peace in our Time” while seated hos¬ tilities raged on our” Earth. Young L. Young C. Ziegler What You Are Is God’s Gift to You , What You Make of Yourself Is Your Gift to God. ... And it is well you should. The hidden well-spring of your soul must needs rise and run murmuring to the sea; And the treasure of your infinite depths would be revealed to your eyes. But let there be no scales to weigh your unknown treasure; And seek not the depths of your knowledge with staff or sounding line. For self is a sea boundless and measureless. Say not, T have found the truth,’ but rather, ' I have found a truth.’ Say not, T have found the path of the soul.’ Say rather, T have met the soul walking upon my path.’ For the soul walks upon all paths. The soul walks not upon a line, neither does it grow like a reed. The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals.” GIBRAN Wes+ccH Soccer VARSITY — 2nd row from, left to right are: C.
