Combined herein are the best features of many yearbooks together with our own brainstorms. But we, ourselves, could have done little without the gracious cooperation of you Seniors and of you underclassmen who have contributed with your suggestions, snapshots, and with your growing enthusiasm. That the Yellowjacket may be not only your autographed book but a loved object is our sincerest wish. Qoard of gcfucation by E. A. Sutton 099 QQ P so .W etten We, the Seniors of '47, wish to take this opportunity to extend our congratulations to the school board for a job well done. Their many contributions toward thsbetterment of conditions in the school have been deeply appreciated. we would like to express our sincere thanks for the whole hearted interest they have shown in us and for the work they have done for us. lr. Thompson is a newcomer to our board. I . Van Petten has served two years, and I . Sutton is the veteran of the board, having served three years. Do you recognize this pleasant looking group? For the past year they have had their hands full trying to mould the plastics that are ourselves. We have been so formless at times, we wonder that they could shape us at all. Our indifference to education might easily have made them think they were nursing sleeping sickness victims. It has taken patience and ability to guide us successfully through our high school career, but our faculty possesses these qualities to a high degree. They have been not only teachers but also friends -- friends who have left their indelible marks on our characters. In the years to come, after this book and the memories it holds may have been forgotten, they will still be remembered. We are grateful for the privilege of being associated with auch unselfish, highly-trained members of the teaching profession. Lucky! That's what we've been, just plain lucky! For our four years in H.R.H.S. we've had the opportunity of obtaining an education in one of the nicest looking buildings in the state. Much of this is due to the efforts of Ralph nMiken Chatham, custodian. Through much hard work and tireless effort, nMiken has succeeded in keeping our building in excellent condition. M1ke 1s extremely well-liked by .. the student body, and is always available when y I anyone needs a helping hand. X r. Q! Eecfica tion Every so often a school system such as ours is blest with someone exceptionally talented and energetic. Just such a blessing descended upon us last year in the form of Mrs. Marcellne Zabel, our present home-economics teacher. We feel very privlledged to be dedicating this annual to such a tireless and ambitious worker. The student body is truly indebted to her for many accomplishments. The success of our popular school lunch program is due to the ceaseless efforts and supervision of Mrs. Zabel It is she who plans those delicious, well-balanced,nour1sh1ng menus so enjoyed by all. She is cheerfully donating hours of work to this program, and receiving for it only the satisfaction of knowing it is a worth imile job being well done. Many of the new, unusual ideas for refreshments, games, programs, decorations and parties can be traced to Hrlszgbglp Filled with ingenious ideas, she is always willing to help in some way to execute her novel plans no matter how busy she actually may be. Proof of her abilities as a home-economics teacher can be obtained by sampling some of her classes handiwork or merely by sniffing the delicious aromas floating around the halls during the cooking period. From all reports she does an excellent job as an Algebra instructor, not to mention her orderly study halls. Always maintaining an extremely cheerful attitude and never tiring from the strenuous demands placed upon her, Mrs. zgbdl is exceedingly popular and highly respected by the student body. We have never ceased to admire her knowledge and-talents in so many varied fields, so to her, we Seniors respectfully dedicate this annual as a small token 'of our appreciation for all of her good works here in H.R.H.S. 3' 'e L+ -0 12- Q 'Qi 5 fl? s ,.'-- , f, '1 ' I' -Ll'-' ff l. . ig.. At the first of tha year the group became organized and with Beth Bruce and Pearl Marie Riggin ascheerleaders and with the beginning of the first Harveyville football season in over ten years, they went into action. After the football season, the club was reorganized, a new ommstitution adopted, and the cheerleading section was enlarged from tvo to three members. after securing new uniforms and acquiring many aches and pains, the new cheer leaders were ready to lead the Pep Club on a cheering spree equalled only by the brilliant record of the nYellowjacketn teams. The group attended many out of town games as well as the county and district tournements, retaining their interest and enthusiasm throughout the season. Officers for the past year have been: President, Barbara Hallerg Vice-President, Jo Ann Van Petteng Secretary and Treasury, Myrna Marrs. The Pep Club is sponsored by Miss Caldwell and Miss Doyle. Qam! One of the most important extra-cirricular activities in our school system is music. One division of this, the band, is composed of those budding young musicians who desire to play an instrument purely for enjoyment. Due to the necessity of leading the parade at the Grange Fair in September, and the early commencement of the football season here, the band was rushed into public performances after only a few practices. The change from playing at these games to that of playing at basketball games was made almost immediately. At the finish of our home basketball season, the group commenced practice on some numbers for the music contest held in March. The remaining time was spent in preparation of numbers for Baccalaureate and Com encement. As is the case every year, we have several beginners who practice faithfully and have weekly lessons so that they may soon be playing with the band. The band is under the direction of miss Marjorie Doyle, supervisor of mus c. Glzeer :leaders 52 42s gig, Q4 e Cgkag 4, The girls glee club, under the direction of Miss Marjorie Doyle, has been a very successful organization this year. Many songs were learned for programs and for enjoyment in two, three, and four parts. Of early importance to the glee club was the Christmas Operetta. Then with the Spring semester came the annual Spring Music Contest which was resumed for the first time in several years. The contest was held in Eskridge on the 28th of March. Numbers by the whole glee club and those by a sextette composed of Donna Rae Robbins, Jean Heller, Beth Bruce, Anne Bean, Babs Jo Van Petten were Haller, and entered, as well as solos by Donna Jean Haller and-Anne Rae Robbins, Dean. Other programs in which the girls glee club participated were club meetings and parties, as well llX M, For the second consecutive year the boys glee club functioned as an active group. Due to the football season taking the boys extra activity time, the glee club was not formed until the second semester. At that time, however, the boys met with Miss Marjorie Doyle twice a week for a practice period. Combined with the girls group the boys participated in the presentation of the Christmas Operetta. At the Spring Music Contest the entire glee club sang two numbers in two part harmony, while Bill Justus and Sheldon Davis sang solos on the same program. During the year the boys also appeared at club meetings and at a church service in observation of Boy Scout Week. as performances at the Bmmalaureate and Commencement exercises. ' LX dy 1 ,1 . ,- 'Q A ?a' LFE?-iggp fair W f Lt' Q!! vs A new organization for girls, the Kansas Association for Youth, was adopted here this year, with every girl in school joining. The purpose of the nKay-ettesn is to aid the high school youth in becoming adult citizens, worthy of the democratic traditions of our country. The six worthy objectives to be fulfilled are: Religion, Personality, Leadership, Service, Appreciation and Recreation. Provided with a constitution, declaration of privileges, slogan, motto, and pledge, the girls delved ambitiously into a full year. Meetings were held every other week, and consisted of a business meeting and program. Due to the variation and interest worked into these periods, the meetings proved very popular as well as educational. Following an extensive program, the girls participated in many activities such as: sponsoring the USO Drive and the Junior Red Cross, entertaining the mothers with a Valentine's Party, attending Church in a body, and giving a very successful party for the parents. For each accomplishment the group was given a specified number of points. All the time the nKay-ettesn were working toward a goal of l,OOO points for which they would receive special recognition. First year officers chosen by the girls were: President - Erma Cummings, Vice-President - Myrna Marrs Secretary - El Dana Fields, and Treasurer - Harriet Walker. A Board of Directors, consisting of nine members, each with a specific job and working under one of the four lady sponsors, were chosen by the officers. Division of timq at school, between shop work and inside work created an interesting programIb1'the boys to follow. Several projects for the purpose of improving their financial condition were undertaken by the F.E A. the result of which was very gratifying. The present officers of the chapter are: President Gene Romineg Vice-President,Kenneth Nicholsg Secretary Donald Rogers, Treasurer: Raymond Hodgson: Reporter Louis Walkerg Advisor: Mr. Richards. peretta ff The combined glee clubs of the Harveyville Rural High School Music Department, under the direction of Miss Doyle, supervisor of music, presented a Christmas Operetta on the night of December 15, 1946. Dean, Coach Bob Kuntz Rey Hodgson Cgaoofball The Harveyville Yellowjackets saw action on the football field this season for the first time in ten years. They were, however, under a definite handicap from the beginning. The first game of the season with Auburn was most discouraging and the second with Havensville, failed to heighten their morale. Then the uJacketsP romping over a local team, found their bearings and started on a scoring streak that carried them through five games. However, in the last game of their season, they succumbed to Dwight by a margin of one point. The team included four seniors: Donald Rogers, Gene Romine, Carl Thompson and Raymond Hodgson, the latter two being the only casualties of the season both occurring in the Maple Hill game. Downing all other competition with an average of 55 points a game and a strong defense, the Jackets remained in the all victorious position until the last game of the season. This one defeat in the 18 game schedule was handed to us by Reading. After an exciting game with a breathtaking climax, the contest ended 55 to 52 in favor of Reading. In the County Tournament Harveyville won first place honors with comparative ease, receiving a trophy for first in the league and one for first in the tournament. Flu struck 7 out of lO of our players the week of the District, so the boys considered themselves lucky to place third and receive an invitation to the Regional.
