I do believe that the realization of our political nature gives the academic commtuiity a special responsibility for realistic study of the political life of our society. Our politics are complex and confused, and we need to learn how to keep the various strands of our political life less tangled than is now the case, Many people advocate institutional involvement in problems of the environment, inner city, racial conflict, and the conflict raging around national militarism. However I believe that direct participation in public affairs requires caution and finesse. . . .
