It was so foggy this morning that I couldn't find the school. I got a new car and couldn't figure out how to start it. The parking lot was so crowded that I had to park a block away. My alarm refused to put forth any sound. Superintendent- Mr. Larry Nudell I couldn't walk to school because my feet were asleep. I waited at a stop sign, until the policeman gave me permission to go. I got halfway here and decided it was too far to walk, so I went back home. My pet hamster died and I had to attend the funeral. I had to wait for a train to cross the tracks. I knew it was going to blizzard so I stayed in bed. It took me two hours just to get my eyes open so I decided I wasn't going to make it anyway. Halfway to school I realized I had half of my pajamas on, so I had to go home. I thought it was Saturday (?) Principal- Mr. Gordon Baumgartner 11 School Board- Betty English; Clerk, Marge Krohn, Arley Hinsz, Jim Lewis, Ervin Boese; President, Betty Liebelt English Variations On “The Raven” Once upon a daytime dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary. Over a quaint and curious volume of forgotten English texts. While I nodded nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping, As of someone gently rapping, rapping on her desk. Tis only some teacher, I muttered, tapping at her desk. Only this and nothing more. Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken, Doubtless, said I, what she utters is only noun and verb. Caught from some unhappy preposition which followed by a short conjunction. Followed fast and followed faster till it ends in short disaster. Till the sentence of her hopes burdens students with a bore. While the teacher is still trying, trying to tackle sentence structure. Straight I wheeled a paper missile in front of her into the principal. Then, upon the hard seats sinking, I betook myself to thinking. Spanking unto hanging, thinking what my punishment has in store What this grim ungainly, ghastly, gaunt, and ominous teacher meant in croaking Nevermore This I sat engaged in guessing, but no idea expressing. To the Faul whose fiery eyes now burning into my bosom's core' This and more I sat explaining, with my head at ease reclining. On the plastic's hard lining that the school gloated o'er, Expelled from school was the verdict, because of my controllable bore. When asked another chance to stay. Quoth Mrs. Faul, Nevermore 12 Vocational How To Raise A Good Student 141 lb. flesh and bones 6 pints stuffed cranium 4V£ ounce package of participation 1 gallon of attention 3 hours of hard studying 5 teaspoons of instant energy 1 envelope of all purpose intelligence l i cup smart-seasoned brain mix 1-A teaspoons of patience powder 2 cups of self-determination sauce 15 cups of confidence Pound flesh and bones to flatten. Presidents Believe-lt-Or-Not Zachary Taylor pastured his favorite horse on the White House Lawn. James Buchanan spent over $3000 for wine at his inaugural ball. Teddy Roosevelt was the only President who did not use the personal pronoun I in his inaugural address. Ulysses Simpson Grant was given the name Hiram Ulysses Grant when he was born. Jefferson wrote his own epitaph. James Madison was the first President to regularly wear trousers instead of knee breeches. George Washington borrowed money to go to his first inauguration. William Henry Harrison died as a result of his own inauguration cele- bration. Thomas Jefferson was the first presi- dent to shake hands with guests rather than bow. The wife of President Rutherford Hayes. Lucy, was nicknamed Lem- onade Lucy because she served lem- onade rather than liquor at White House receptions. On January 1, 1802, Thomas Jefferson was presented with a 1,235 Lb. cheese made in Westchester, Mass. Fine Arts I'm going to have a Breakdown, the boy thought after just entering the classroom moments before. Poor Poor Pitiful Me, he said to himself, being a new student in the school is very lonely. He had been very active in his school's music department. He thought now that maybe things will be different. The moment finally came. He was to meet his new music director, but he knew it was Mr. Tessman, so he was more interested in the girl across the row from him. He looked into her Ebony Eyes and he thought, Wow! You Make Me Feel Like Dancin'. Mr. Tessman introduced himself and announced, 'Tonights the Night' for swing choir auditions. The boy won- dered if the girl was going to be there too. Wow, What a Wonderful World to be put under the same Corner of the Sky with her, especially with the Feelings I have for her. That night, the boy came to the school for the audition. Just my luck, he thought, the girl he saw earlier that day was there also. He decided to introduce himself. The Boy told the girl, I just had to tell you that 'You Light Up My Life' and that 'I Can't Smile Without You', and I was won- dering if you could Come Sail Away' with me to the 'Hotel California' to see a preview of the movie Star Wars. It would really be a 'Heartbreak' to me if you said no. When she said that she would go to the movie with him, he told her that he would have Night Fever until they met again. The next day in school Mr. Tessman announced the members of swing choir. Both the boy and girl were selected. When they left the music room, they yelled We Are the Champions.' The boy told the girl, Thank You For Being My Friend. I think I like it here so I hope 'We'll Never Have To Say Good-bye Again'. Because of the increase, the staff had to work longer and harder in order to produce a great paper. As a money raising project, the staff organized a coat check at basketball games and tournaments. Yearbook Staff Pictures, croppers, pages, deadlines, headaches, and long hours. These are just a few ingredients needed in producing a yearbook. Many students think about the annual as just a book of pictures. There is a lot more that goes into it than just pictures. There is a style and a theme used to tie the book together, there is a lot of copy needed and a great deal of imagination to make it different from past years. There are quite a few people needed to do the work. An editor, photog- grapher, advisor and staff. All of these people work together to get the job done. Unfortunately the staff is slowly decreasing. The interest is diminishing and it's too bad. Soon the memories of your high school days will diminish also and no one will be there to preserve them. It has been a great deal of work for me this year, but I had some assist- ance. Miss Irey was very helpful when I got lost and she always had a clever idea or two to contribute to the final product. Hugh Farrington, the photographer, was also a great help. He was always there to photograph anything and everything to make sure we had enough pictures. Also, the staff. To the students who came to the meetings, Miss Irey, and Hugh, I would like to say Thank- you. Homecoming, Sno-fest, Prom, Graduation, and many other events are needed in making an annual also. These events were special to each of you and through this book, I hope that I captured and preserved some of those thoughts for you. First Row: V. Theige, D. Schimke, J. McLaurin, K. Solberg. Freshmen Initiation Freshmen Initiation was one of the activities during Homecoming. It was held on Tuesday of the week. It was the long-awaited for day of the year for the upper classmen. The freshmen girls apparel were long dresses, curlers, white socks, tennis shoes, a lot of jewelry, and lipstick thickly applied. The boys wore T-shirts and socks, rolled up jeans, barettes or ribbons in their hair, one tennis shoe and one dress shoe. Also, the most degrading of all, they had to carry purses. Along with the unusual dress code, they had to obey every command an upperclassmen ordered. These ranged from singing the school song, at the top of their lungs, to 10 to 25 push- ups with someone on their backs. After their hard day of tasks, the freshmen were sentenced to four years of hard work at Harvey High School. mm 76 Fifties Day The style of clothing during 1978 has been gauchos, high fashion boots, and cowl necklines. On November 18, the style was changed to the early fifties. The girls wore poodle skirts, white bobby socks, and many wore the traditional saddle shoes. They wore ribbons in their hair or pulled all their hair up into a pony tail. The boys wore very tight jeans rolled up to their ankles, white socks, and tennis shoes. Many wore white T- shirts and put tons of grease in their hair to get the wet look . To end the day, a dance was held at the school and this was when the costume winners were announced. Kim Susag and Dale Braunagel won pizzas for their originality. 77 Teacher Appreciation Day Too often we think of teachers as just the people who give assignments and tests, more assignments, more tests, and an assignment and a test. On Thursday, November 10th, which was designated as Teacher Appreciation Day, the student body was given the chance to show their gratitude to the entire school staff. Members of the Student Council presented each of the personnel of HHS with a carnation at a lyceum to honor them on their special day. Other activities at the lyceum included a skit that was put on by a few council members. It portrayed a few of our teachers as we know them. Our teachers and the other personnel are devoted to educating us and preparing us for our lifetime careers. All we can do is say Thanks , even if it doesn't seem sufficient to repay them for their concerns. The Harvey High School Student Council hereby resolves that on this day, Thursday, November 10, 1977 does set aside said day as Teacher Appreciation Day in the Harvey High School. Be It further resolved that as an expression of appreci- ation to the teaching staff of Harvey High School for their contributions to the welfare and educational development of the students of said high school, the Harvey High School Student Council, as representative assembly of the student body, acting on their behalf do present to each staff member a carnation to wear on the day designated as Teacher Appreciation Day. Be it further resolved that the students of the mentioned student body be hereby directed to observe and engage in the spirit and intent of said day, Thursday, November 10, 1977 well as throughout the remaining days of this school year so as to foster and maintain an educational environment providing benefit and growth to both student and teacher alike. 78 Mini-Day On January 18th, the students of Harvey High experienced a change in routine. Instead of going to Band, English, and Math, students were learning how to polka or how to play whist. The committee that organized the day worked very hard to get everything set up. The variety of classes totalling 56, were taught by a variety of people. Many were students, teachers, and people from the area. They all were supposedly experts in their fields. As one student said, Mini-Day was an educational breakthrough. Finally after three years of debate, students were permitted to change the structure of the school day to allow for an expansion of courses. 79 Flowers for Algernon Cast of Characters Dr. Jay Strauss...............................................................JayKost Professor Harriet Nemur.......................................................Jan Schweitzer Alice Kinnian.................................................................Julie Barstad Barbara Seldon................................................................Donna Edinger Charlie Gordon................................................................Pl°m Doris Connie..................................................................Vickie Theige Nurse Young Charlie...........................................................Karla Schaan Prank.........................................................................Dale Braunagel Gina..........................................................................Kristy Krohn Mrs. Donner...................................................................Brenda Hager Joe Mr. Harvey................................................................Dennis Harsch Young Mother..................................................................Carole Ziegler Father........................................................................Paul Bowlinger Child Norma...................................................................Becky Keller Mrs. Feldman.........................................................••••••••• Joan Miller Ellen.........................................................................Janice Richter Bernice.......................................................................Delena Filler Chairlady.....................................................................Paula Waldoch Mrs. Moondy...................................................................Rachelle Roble Mrs. Strauss..................................................................Jane McLaurin Jackie Welberg................................................................Jodi Edinger Anne Welberg..................................................................Carla Keller Older Mother..................................................................Lorraine Otto Adult Norma...................................................................Cindy Wahl Director......................................................................Marilyn Irey Student Director..............................................................Paula Waldoch Light and Sound Technicians...................................................Nancy Buchwitz Scott Weckerly 80 00 Hold the Phone Cast of Characters Mrs. Mary Whitson . . . . 1 Manrv Starlina ......
