Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1974 volume:

1974 HORNET Harvey High School Harvey North Dakota Volume I Reach Out for Knowledge Knowledge ... is finding out something for oneself with pain, with joyr with exultancy, with labor, and with all the little ticking, breathing mo- ments of our lives, until it is ours as that only is ours which is rooted in the structure of our lives. Knowledge is a potent and subtle distillation of ex- periences, a rare liquor, and it belongs to the person who has the power to see, think, feel, taste, smell, and observe for himself, and who has hunger for it. ” Thomas Clayton Wolfe Reach Out for Inspiration Creative people are especially observant, and they value accurate obser- vation more than other people do . . . They are by constitution more vig- orous, and have available to them an exceptional fund of psychic and physical energy. Frank X. Barron 3 Reach Ouf for Friendship We came into this world like brother and brother: And now let’s go hand in hand, not one before another. William Shakespeare 4 Reach Out for Happiness Real happiness is not dependent on external things. The pond is fed from within. The kind of happiness that stays with you is the happiness that springs from inward thoughts and emotions. You must cultivate your mind if you wish to achieve enduring happiness. You must furnish your mind with interesting thoughts and ideas. For a mind seeks pleasure as a sub- stitute for happiness. William Lyon Phelps Reach Out for Brotherhood If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human rela- tionships - the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace. And I build a path from earth to sky It isn’t long that I must leave. Some other day I'll sail the sky. But after another April rain listen . . . hear the rainbow cry. Cyndy Keller 53 Junior Class Play It all begins when Mrs. Abott (Cin- dy Wcisser) wants to be socially important. She decides to have a weekend party so she invites so- cially important people. Tilings began to backfire when grandma (Mary Keller) arrives. The chil- dren (Deb McLaurin, Candice Kost and Darwin Braunagel) plead with grandma to help them out of this situation. After much confusion and disruption, all turns out well and everything returns to normal. Grandma’s Best Years was direc- ted by Mrs. Gary Skogen. DON NYHUS HARVEY DAIRY In Memoriam: Kenneth Pius Richter To every tiling there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be bom, and a time to die; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to cast away: A time to love, and a rime to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: notliing can be put to it nor any thing taken from it: And God doeth it, that men should fear before him. That which hath been is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God rcquiieth that which is past. Taken from Ecclesiastes 3 Kenneth Pius Richter, 17-ycar-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Pius Richter of Selz, died in a car accident, Sunday, May 12, 1974. He was bom April 28, 1957 at Harvey. He lived on a farm three miles southeast of Selz with his parents until the family moved into Selz in 1972. He was a sophomore at Harvey High School, where he participated in football, wrestling, and track. He was also a member of varsity H Club and was a Sno-Fcst attendant his freshman year. And-which is more-You'll be a Man, my son! 86 Reach Out for Individuality Have the courage to be different without being contrary - without flaunting your independence. The quality which makes us interesting, that makes us outstanding personalities, is the courage to be ourselves. Anonymous 88 Reach Out for Tomorrow MY CREED By Edgar A. Guest To live as gently as I can; To be, no matter where, a man; To take what comes of good or ill. And cling to faith and honor still; To do my best, and let that stand The record of my brain and hand; And then, should failure come to me. Still work and hope for victory. To have no secret place wherein I stoop unseen to shame or sin; To be the same when I'm alone As when my every deed is known; To live undaunted, unafraid Of any step that I have made; To be without pretense or shame Exactly what men think I am. To leave some simple mark behind To keep my having lived in mind; If enmity to aught I show, To be an honest, generous foe, To play my little part, nor whine That greater honors are not mine. This, I believe, is all I need For my philosphy and creed.
