For most of the seventh grade we walked cautiously over the rickety floors, and then, in April we moved into the new building. We were the first 7th grade class to hold classes in the new addition to Harvey. The main events in our second year at Harvey were a Snowball Dance, which was really a lot of fun, and a talent show, which proved that our class had been en- dowed with an abundance of talent. Our freshman year was important to us in that it was our first year of Senior High. We started off with a class party, where we got to know all the new students. ln the tenth grade we set to work on numerous money making projects, including the sale of Christmas cards, and participation in an all school magazine drive. In April we sponsored an April in Paris dance, the decorations being very Parisian, but the atmosphere, strictly American. The money we raised was later to be spent on the Prom and various other class projects. The first semester of our Junior year found us very impatient, awaiting the ar- rival of our class rings, ln February, we had a Junior get-together, which proved to be a big success. The entertainment was slightly insane, but everyone had a good laugh, April found us in the midst of our school presidential campaigns and elec- tions. As always they were fun, and very successful, and were followed closely by the Junior-Senior Prom. That was a never- to-be forgotten night, and altho we were up all night, and busy all the next day, we never wanted to stop and rest. When the year ended, we knew that the end was ap- preaching. At Lastl Our senior year in high school. After 5 years of anticipation the entire class was determined this was going to be a year, and a class of seniors that the teachers - the whole school - wouldn't for- get for a long time. We started the year with our senior get together, Everyone had a riotous time at the get together itself, and at the parties afterward. The football season was a terrific success. Beating Mentor 27-O, we won the N.E.C. champion- ship. Many of our players were awarded individual honors, all of which were well deserved. The homecoming dance was a success also, and Carol Pykonen made a lovely queen. We were all very proud of our basketball team also as they played championship ball. Our senior class play, and senior banquet finished off the year for us, and we are now awaiting, with mix- ed emotions, graduation exercises. lug., xv-an hmm QE if ' IQ, 'W . x J 1 in ff K J? s ! Harvey has five honor organizations that recognize students of high scholastic abil- ity, leadership, character and ability and willingness to serve. These include the National Honor Society, the WMPW Scholarship Club, Quill and Scroll, Scarlet Torch, and Key Club. The National Honor Society is made up of seniors who have achieved high scholastic standings in their class, and have shown initiative and leadership throughout their high school years. In WMPW Scholarship Club, members are students in the tenth through twelfth grades who are in the top ten per cent of their class or have a 3.5 average or better. The Quill and Scroll is a national organization which honors the students who give their time and talents to the publications of the school and still maintain high scholastic aver- ages. Scarlet Torch honors those senior girls who have a high scholastic average and are active in extra-curricular activities. They sponsor the Senior Get-Together, Homecoming Dance, Red Feather Drive, and the annual Senior Banquet. Key Club is the most active boys' club at Harvey. lt is an international club sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club and is made up of boys chosen from grades ten through twelve. Learning the three R's is only part af an educational program in a school. Being active in the activities of the different clubs and boards also develops the student's personality and helps him to become a better citizen. A student can be elected to some clubs and boards or can join others on his own accord. Harvey is fortunate in having clubs which vary from dramatics to science. A student can find a club in which his interests lie or can join one which will open new fields of interest for him. All clubs are supervised by faculty advisors and have regular meeting nights. l-larvey's clubs and boards give the student excellent opportunities to develop his in- terests which will aid him in later life. , g, LATIN CLUB Bottom Row: Miss Weigand, San- dra Babcock, Patty Hanes, Astrid Vainonen, Judy Guthleben, Marie Kahan, Susan Amendola, Nancy Rippin. In the Class AA, we defeat- ed Geneva and Ashtabula, losing finally to St. Josepl'1's at Western Reserve Univesity. Coach Keck's courtmen had one of the finest seasons in Harvey's basketball history. The Raiders compiled a l7 and l record, losing only to Salem. Their undefeated NEC. season was the first in seven years for any school. Harvey's first non-conference game was with the tall Orange team. ln this game the Raiders found themselves behind at the half for the first time in the season. l-larvey's strong defense held Orange to only eight points in the third quarter while the Raiders netted 22, which put them well in the lead. From there on the Red team maintained their lead and scored a heavy 68-53 victory, sending the surprised Orange team back with a loss. The first and only setback came when Salem invaded our gym. The first quarter showed Salem ahead with a lead of only 4 points. But the second quarter gave the Quak- ers o sizable lead which they kept the rest of the tilt. Harvey's last encounter was against the Wickliffe Blue Devils. The Devils were up for the game. They tallied 20 points in the first period, while ollowing the Raiders only twelve. AN E Joe Galat one hundred seven For the second straight year Harvey dominated in N.E.C. wrestling scene, They captured the un- disputed crown this year when they defeated Men- tor by a stiff 25-l6 win, The Cardinals showed great improvement over their preceding encounter which Harvey downed them with a close 24-2l contest. The Raider Rasslers had an over-all record of four wins and five losses. They highlighted the out-of-conference wrestling by topping the B squad of last year's state champs Maple Heights 30-l9, winning with six pins. The services of Denny McSweeney, rugged llO pounder, won 3, lost 2, and Dain Durigg, l27 lbs, with a record of 2 and 4, were very valuable to Horvey's success. Team captain, Joe Galat, outstanding heavy weight, finished the season with an amazing rec- ord of I6-O. After completing this remarkable feat, Joe placed 3rd in the Hiram invitational, wrestling against some of the best men in the state. Collectively, Harvey placed 6th out of I8 schools, showing a great improvement over last year. Surely the scientists and engineers who have spent dozens of years and countless dollars to develop feather- weight fuels, electronic navigating de- vices, limitless sources of energy. Perhaps members of this year's graduating class at your high school will be listening, too. Some of you may help build and equip the first space ship. One of you might pilot it - and send that message to the anxious Earth. Other realms of research 4 just as satisfying, just as spectacular - also need today's young men and women.
