HARVEY HIGH SCHOOL MARIO DELISIO Student Photographer We Iledicate This Book . . . To You, Mr. Smith Year after year the students, teachers and administration of Harvey High have been able to depend upon your willing help to keep the school program moving steadily forward. Your patience in teaching the theories of physics and chemistry encouraged us to keep on trying to master these subjects. Your guiding hand has aided our Stu- dent Court. We, like generations of Harvey stu- dents, affectionotely refer to you as Dale R. Smith. We, the Senior Class of 1956, dedicate our yearbook to you, Mr. Smith - teacher, counselor, friend. Mr. Dole R. Smith 5 MR. ROBERT B. OLDFATHER Superintendent To the Members of the i956 Graduating Class:-- You now possess a certain amount of valuable knowledge, but as you move on you will find that knowledge is not enough. Man today has the knowledge to blow him- self to pieces but spiritually he can find no way to put together the broken pieces of humanity. Much of our knowledge is of material purpose and not spiritual value. You must learn how to live or your education will be in vain. The purpose of your education and training at Harvey High School was to help make you better citizens, better men and women, and better and more useful mem- bers of the human race. We have given you knowledge, but knowledge in itself is not enough. The rest you must supply in your own way and l hope all of you will find the proper way to do this. Congratulations to each of you for reaching this goal, high school graduation, Behind the fundamental operation of Harvey High School is the Paines- ville City School Board. The group serves without pay, giving much of their time for the welfare of the schools and the community. The Board decides on courses of study in the schools along with the allocation of funds for the many expenses. SCHGOL BOARD MR. FRANK J. BLAZINA MR. WILLIAM C. SMITH MR. LOOMIS W. LAIRD MR, ROBERT JENKS MR. RAYMOND C. HENDFRSHOT MR. JOHN C. CORWIN Principal Mr. John C. Corwin, Principal of Harvey High School, is faced with the various problems associated with the operation of a combined junior and senior high school. He was promoted to Principal of Har- vey in l948 and has done an excellent job coordin- ating the program of a six year high school serving more than twelve hundred students, Mr. Corwin also has been active in civic affairs, having served as President of the Painesville Kiwanis Club during l955. Mr. John Moore, Dean of Boys, is an able coun- selor who assists the boys in arranging their sched- ules, gives them vocational guidance, and helps them with their personal problems should need arise. Mr. Moore also serves as an assistant coach, instructor in American Government, and as adviser to the Central Committee. MR. JOHN MOORE Dean of Boys MR. HORACE RAINSBERGER Assistant Principal Mr. Horace D. Rainsberger, Assistant Principal of Harvey, is well known by the students, especially the upperclassmen who attended Champion Junior High where Mr, Rainsberger was Principal. When Champion was torn down and Harvey enlarged, Mr. Rainsberger was transferred to Harvey to assist in the administration of the six year high school pro- gram. He also is responsible for scheduling the use of the building for school and community functions. Miss Marguerite Lapham, Dean of Girls, with her friendly manner solves many a complicated prob- lem for the girl students. Working closely with the Dean of Men in a testing and guidance program for Juniors, she aids students in planning for the future. Miss Lapham also teaches two classes of Algebra and serves as business adviser for The Harbinger, MISS MARGUERITE LAPHAM Dean of Girls 7 Fflll HY . .. The backbone of the educational staff at Harvey is an enlistment of forty-two teachers who constantly strive to increase the scholastic standing ot both the students and the school. Coming from varied colleges and universities, eur faculty is equipped to meet successfully a majority of the problems confronting them by the students. These difficulties concern both studies and personal prob- lems, for the teacher acts both as an instructor and a guidance counselor. The ability of the teachers to instruct more than one subject and have a broad knowledge ot the en- tire Harvey curriculum gives us all a great advantage toward gaining a good education, r. and Mrs. Britt ore Chapr-ions at the Homecoming Elance F A, Applegate Miss Ethel Baker Mrs. Hazel Baker H S in Ed. with Music B. The first dancing class was the start of it all, The boys were too shorty the girls, too tall! We had many good times in the old Champion building, But we moved into Harvey when the floors began yielding. We admired the new school's shiny floors and long halls, The rushing students, new desks, and the green tiled walls. Our wild freshman parties began the mad whirl, We had our first taste of the senior high swirl. Homework came second to slang books and notes, iThings more alluring than Ancient Mariner quotesll Soon we were sophomores, so smart and so wise, With a worldly air that a senior would prize. ln the magazine drive we joined with the rest: Our reward? A track that ranks with the best. Remember the games and the good times after - With juniors packed in to the top most rafter? Prom night! The magic of Rhapsody in Blue Wove spells of enchantment 'til the morning was through And then we were seniors, our class at the top, We'd climbed that last step and were ready to stop. Our Senior Get-Together we believe was the best, For we've memories of flappers, matching outfits, and a song fest We cheered on our team with all of our might, And they showed us that they could get in there and fight. At OUR Homecoming Dance reigned the Homecoming Queen, Soft lights and sweet music completing the scene. Term papers, exams, and our lamps burning late, We took this in stride: 'tis a poor senior's fate. The long months of worry, impatience, and doubt, Were forgotten at once when our Anvil came out. We've almost reached the end of our long, long trip, And we've shared in a wonderful partnership - And so to you Thomas W., we would like to say, Thanks for the Memories, in our hearts they'Il stay. With officers of the Student Association elected by the entire student body, and members of the Student Court, Student Council, and Central Com- mittee elected through the classes, Harvey is a prime example of democracy at work. The Student Body President for this year was Dell Smith, Dick Willis served as Vice President and Judy Kephart acted as Secretary. The Student Council is in charge of recognizing and approving all charters of Harvey Clubs and deals with many matters of concern to all students. Council Prese ident was Nancy Webster, Vice President, Morris Fox, Secretary, Carol Hammer, Treasurer, Dick Wertheimer, and Bailift, John Mummey. Her crown was of white sat- in and white carnations and she carried a nosegay of white carnations centered in pink with pink streamers. . , . Qfamecamdag Zami The annual Homecoming Dance was held on November 26, l955. Harvey's large gym was transformed into a haze of blue and white with festooned streamers and trellis effects. Midway through the evening, seven of Harvey's most charming girls were introduced as the court. One by one they marched down the long white carpet stretching from the gym doors to the southerly end of the room as Russ Harmon's Band played and Key Club President Dick Willis described their ensembles. With the entire court assembled before the throne, Dell Smith, co-captain of the football team, announced that Nancy Webster had been chosen queen and presented her with her crown. The Queen's attendants were Carol Baker, Macrina Carmody, Marge Evangelista, Anne Snowden, Harleen Steiner, and Deanna Wirenius. Each attendant carried a nosegay of white cornations with a center to match her gown. The affair was co-sponsored by the members of Scarlet Torch and Key Clubs. 9l Football VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM Front Row, left to right --- Tim Bechon, Jim Shula, Jim Nucciarone, Craig Soms, Jim Guynn, Terry McCoviy, Doll Smith, Don Locotosh, Don Tobias, Tony Trips, Joshua Marshall, Dick Nerorla, Second Row -- John Herendeen, Joe Galat, Frank Doyle, Alon Covert, Dan Hanzak, Don Martin, Patil Hotfland, Jim Myers, Dennis McSweeny, Joe Vendetti, Bull Green. The season's opener was a thriller, as both Harvey and Brush played amazing defensive ball for the entire four quar- ters. The tilt was not decided until the final gun as Harvey won 7-6. l VARSITY FOOTBALL RECORD Harvey Brush 6 Harvey Geneva 7 Harvey Willoughby l 8 Harvey John Hay 6 Harvey Fairport 0 Harvey Mentor 20 Harvey Riverside 6 Harvey Ashtabula 6 Harvey Warren l 3 The scoring machine opened up in the next contest though, as Geneva invaded the Flats and met a stone wall as they were dumped, 42-7. Terry McCorry, John Marshall, Paul Hoffland, and Craig Sams paved the way to the second win of the season. Willoughby will be remembered by the Red Raiders as this was the tilt where the Rise series of plays was determined a success. Alan Covert faked a handoff to Terry McCorry and then gave the pigskin to Paul Hoffland. Everyone was fooled and while Hoffland raced eighty-two yards for a touchdown, the referees blew the whistles, thinking McCorry had the ball. The entire squad saw action when John Hay invaded, as the Raiders couldn't help but pour it on, 56-6. The Harvey line seemingly crushed Fairport's Seven Rocks of Granite as the Skippers showed very little of their early season spirit in losing, 43-O. Now comes the time when we must re- port the results of 'that' game. Mentor did put a stop to our winning streak by con- tinuing theirs, 20-7. Riverside and Ashtabula completed the league schedule for Harvey and although they both tried, they were unable to dump the Raiders after their one loss and we took both contests, 40-6 and 22-6, respec- tively. The boys had inspiration as we played 'Bula though, for it was the Home- coming Game and the 'Seven Senior Sweet- ies' reigned over the tilt. The team journeyed to Warren to cli- max the season, and had to settle for a tie in the hotly contested game there. The Raiders battled the Mohawks to a l3-l3 tie as the curtain closed on the season and the high school careers of fourteen Seniors, Frosh FRESHMAN FOOTBALL Front Row Jim Mainello, Gary Newton, Mike Corrigan, Earle Drabenstott, John Toon, Ed Nemcth, Torn Hefkman, Dick Arniott, Jim Slotfa. Riverside was the highlight of the be- fore Christmas tilts as the Raider five came from twenty points behind to dump the Beavers, 53-52. After this win, Har- vey hopes were high but they couldn't hold down the Alumni, Mentor, Willough- by, Fairport, Wickliffe, Brush, Geneva, Ashtabula and Riverside. Mid-season spir- its sank to a low ebb. M aqcrs: Bob Hammer and Clyde Myers Something happened to the cagers on February 7. They showed more life and signs of rejuvenation than at any other time during the season. Mentor invaded our new gym and sulked home losers, 57- 42. After Mentor came Euclid and Salem - and two more defeats. The Fairport and Wickilffe games finished the season for Harvey, and the Raiders bowed out in a blaze of glory, winning, 68-47 and 68-54. Tony Tripi and Abbey Picciuto clim- axed their high school basketball careers against Ashtabula in the tourney at Ash- tabula Harbor. Harvey lost out in the first round of the tournament there. Sparking the team in their final games splurge, were underclassmen John Mum- mey, Dick Schmid, Alan Covert, Paul Hoff- land, and Dick Schmid who teamed with the above mentioned Seniors to give the Raiders that long awaited winning com- bination. 97 Reserve Basketball First Row: Bob Crawford, Tony Dicorlo, Don Tripi, Dick Ruins- berger, Gory Gordon. Both football teams, Varsity and Fresh- man, had outstanding seasons and greatly heralded the school by their fine sports- manship and fair play, both in winning and losing. The Varsity Basketball team although getting off to a meager start, whizzed to- ward the finish of the season and sparked our hopes for next year. The underclass cagers, Freshman and 7th and 8th Grade 2 An addition to the Ha vey Athletic program th year was the wrestling tear coached by Dick Knuth. Good thing are expected for our squc in the coming years, sinc a majority of the boys ai returning next year. teams, all had marvelous seasons. The Frosh lost only one game while the other two teams were undefeated and captured the Lake County Crown. The Wrestlers showed that it won't take long to make them a mat power in this section of the State, as they drove to strong victories at the end of the season and placed second in an Invitational Tour- ney at Hiram, Ohio.
