This completely unexaggerated recommendation was not a chamber of commerce banner but rather an award of national fame, earned by the local nurseries and flower experts. Not only fruit trees and shrubs but also roses, peonies and scores of other flowers, grow prosper- ously in the select soil of the surrounding country- side. A total of 40 important nurseries can be counted within a few miles of the downtown area. These in turn employ a large percentage of the work- ing potential of the territory. and bathe Kenra... Five hundred students make up the roll of Painesville Har- vey High School in 1950-5l. One hundred eighty-three are in the graduating senior class. Harvey stands as a proud expanding example of American democratic education. The faculty, as a whole very young and vigorous but with the right temper of age mixed in, is a perfect blend. Every modern improvement has or is being realized. Driver Education, Ohio's third best music department, Visual Educa- tion, four varsity athletics and uncounted intramural activities for both boys and girls, superior Student Publications, drama- tics, clubs, boards and the utmost in democratic student gav- ernment are all offered. These and many other phases of high school life at Har- vey make every one of those l83 seniors look back with pride and a bit of sadness. The years to come, clouded or bright, shall continue tio produce classes of strong willed, dependable, deep thinking citizens from our alma mater. In addition to your regular duties of teaching Literature, Advanced Composition, and Speech, you have helped Harvey become more advanced in drarnatics by being the ad- visor of Le Masque and Thespians. You've been the inspira- tion and director of our all-school plays. Many a time you have have made it possible for a group to attend a play in Cleveland and various other field trips. May your ensuing years give you the pleasure that your past three years have given us, here at Harvey. I Miss Phyllis Brooks S gamd Seated IL. to RJ - Mrs. B, S, Park, presidentg William Smith, W. H. Hickerson, Frank Blazina. Standing - Wallace Green, Robert Oldfather, Glenn Esch, clerk. ' Six prominent men and their popular lady president composed the 1951 Painesville City Board of Education. This group saw to the beginning and completion of the building of the ultramodern education plant shown in architect sketch on the opposite page. After years of preparation and ground work the board can now look back on a job done well to their own high standards. ten Xl , - SX ffl, mx f f f 1 gf W 2 ! f N , 4 N' X mfg V' 5 ' -4 ,-. The teachers and administrators of any high school havea serious job staked out for them every year. In September a large group of students, some eager for learning, and others not so eager, come as strangers into their hands for the beginning of their secondary education. These people have as their life's work the challenging task of molding those students into grown people, with grown up thoughts, ready for any- thing. After the several high school years the teachers have gotten to know their pupils well and have influenced their lives more than even they realize. Mr. R. B. Oldfather Superintendent ELAINE CARROLL Secretary twelve Mr. John Corwin, as principal, directed the faculty for l95l. His statt was made up of 30 full and part time teachers. Every department, mathematics, sciences, business, history and social studies, domestic arts and physical education all rounded out the schedule of every student. This balanced education has been proven essential for everyone if he should go to col- lege or not. Here are the people who make that educa- tion! Fourth Row - Mr. Freeman, Mr. Mackey, Mr. Britt, Mr. Sheets, Mr. Moore, Mr. Smith, Mr. Applegate, Mr. Durigg. thirteen Miss Marguerite Laphom Deon of Girls . E Mr. Robert Dean of Boys fourteen Wfdfdfly From the very start everyone knew that we seniors would be a class with a difference. When we struck out on our own in our very first year here at Harvey and had a Sophomore Sock Hop ,-practically a get-together ljust like the seniorsl, everybody saw we'd have plenty of initiative. We kept it up junior year too, selling magazine subscriptions to bail out the sinking fund for the big Junior-Senior Prom that lay ahead. We'll all remember our first Prom,-moon, Manakiki, and all. But that isn't all we did as juniors. Our class was well represented on both the football and basketball teams, and best of all, we won the first prize in the all-school Stunt Night with our wonderful, corny skit. And then, all of a sudden we were seniors, with only one more year to go. We've come a long way since we were sophomores, and sometimes it's seemed as if there's been an awful lot to learn,-especially when the home- work piled up toward the end of the year, with all of us working hard on com- mencement committees. This year hasn't been just work for us, though. None of us will forget the winter Homecoming, all the better for its long waitg or January Thaw , the Le Masque club's zany play, or all the other funny wonderful things that made us seniors The Seniors of Harvey High. fifteen Ably serving the student body this year, l95O-51, in the executive positions of our student government are Ann Willis, president, Canby Dautel, vice-president, and Marlene Hallock, secretary. The duties required in these positions are endless throughout the year, and the occupants deserve much credit, The legislative branch of our student government here at Harvey is the Student Coun- cil. The Council's job is to make the governing laws of the school. The president of the Student Council this year is Joe Marano. The faculty advisor to this hard-working group is Mr. Layton Pollock. Last, but certainly not least, is the Student Court, the judicial branch of our govern- ment. lt sees that justice reigns. The Chief Justice this year is Tom Guerra. Mr. Dale Smith is the faculty advisor to the group. The students of Harvey High School are very proud of their student government. lt has been functioning here since l924, when one honor study hall was established. Soon afterward honor study halls were on the increase. Then, some time later, student body officials were elected. Following this came the Student Council and Student Court, in operation since l935. Harveyites have put their energies into many organizations in the school. These organizations include the fields of music, dramatics, jour- nalism, athletics and business. There are also clubs whose goals are service to the school and community. For those who excel in certain fields, hon- orary societies have been established. lllUSllI HIID lllllllllHlllJS 1.
