With these aids a newly elected school board built up a system of grammar and high schools. The schools were conducted by the board until 1855, when George E. Howe became superintendent. At the end of his first year, he accepted a better pos- ition elsewhere and was replaced by the Rev. E. H. Hawley. The high school at this time was much inferior to the present high school. Latin, for instance, had been but recently introduced and claimed only three students. In 1858 a new building was erected at a cost of 5B13,000. When the new school opened in 1861, there were nine teachers comprising the staff. Three years later Professor Harvey became the superintendent. Under his administration a new building was erected on St. Clair St., and the class of '68, the first to graduate, consisted of four young ladies and one young gentleman. Professor Harvey accepted the post of State School Com- missioner and left the high school. Vvithin twenty years the school had grown so large that a new building, the present junior high school, was erected, and the year 1919 saw the con- struction of the present Harvey building. Painesville has taken great pride, not only in this rapid growth, but also in the standards of scholarship and character which have been emphasized continually throughout these years. ten 7-Lomas Haivexi gclwol 4? ,bex my :wiv I l' ,f I flffflll 1 Rx mwmsmxsxu U Kallxixu I ff! Hank Rand, star left half, scored four touchdown with Martin Nelson cashing in on an extra point. Although the locals were out first-downed they seemed to have control of the game at all times. HARVEY 12 g FAIRPORT 0 By capitalizing on the fumbles made by the inexperienced Fairport backs the Raiders jumped to an early lead over their opponents in their first league tilt. A blocked punt in the third quarter led to the second Harvey score before the largest crowd that has ever witnessed a game in the loop history. Although the Skippers never made a serious threat, the Mossmen found stiff opposition at all times. HARVEY 20g VVILLOUGHBY 7 In the second league game the Raiders showed a capacity crowd a bril- liant comeback in the last three quarters. Trailing 7-0 at the end of the first twelve minutes the Raiders tied it before half-time by a successful drive for a score. By pushing over two more touchdowns in the second half the Harvey eleven made it a decisive victory for the Red and Black. HARVEY 6g HARBOR 0 Journeying to Ashtabula Harbor for their third league tussle the IMossmen put up a strong second half battle to defeat the Mariners 6-0. The first half was all Harbor with the home team missing several scoring chances. Early in the third quarter a blocked kick led to the only score of the game. During the final period the Harborites handled the ball on only four plays while Harvey toted it 8-L yards downfield on a successive drive that was stopped by the gun. seventy-two YAIlSl'l'Y F00'I'BALL SQUAD Mn. A fumble gave Harvey its scoring chance in the first period, but after working the ball to the two foot line Painesville failed to gain. A poorly placed lateral and a blocked punt lead to victory for the home team hefore approximately 8,000 fans. A razzle-dazzle play in the fourth gave the Mossmen another chance that was nipped by the gun. HARVEY 1-i-Q GENEVA 6 After stopping a Geneva threat early in the game the Painesville gridders carried the hall 80 yards into pay dirt in exactly five plays for the first score. In the second quarter Silvestro plunged over from the two yard line for Har- vey,s final tally. A bad pass in the second half was intercepted by a Geneva end who seampered 53 yards for the final white line. The score was close, but sta- tistics show that the game was all for Harvey. HARVEY lig FAIRPORT 6 After trailing a Skipper halfback 80 yards across the goal line in the open- ing play of the game the Red Raiders struck back with lightning-like speed and cashed in on the extra point to lead at halftime 7-6. By virtue of a long drive in the third quarter the Raiders were able to tally again in the second half. The Harvey fans made it a Painesville night by capturing both goal posts. The first score climaxed an 80 yard drive following the opening kickoff. Scoring again in the second quarter the Panthers showed power. A fumble gave Ash- tabula its final score. Harvey,s attempts to score were in vain because many long gains were called back for penalties. HARVEY Og CONNEAUT 6 In the final game of the season the Raiders went down before the charge of the Conneaut Trojans in a sea of mud. After battling through a scoreless first half the invaders from the east were able to push over a score in the third quarter that spelled victory. Play was severely slowed down by the layer oi mud that covered the entire field. In the final period the Red Raiders threat- ened when Rand slipped off his left tackle for 50 yards. State Street Poinesville, Ohio lllllll If 1 Glass pfzoplzecxl VVake, sleepers, wake, both great and small, The captainis' up before you all. He calls Good dayi' to everyone, lVal'e, you sleepers, night is done. Thus tooted Lizzie Twinklebell,' Harrison, ship's bugler, on the middle morning of a leisurely North Atlantic cruise. The day was of the Gulf Stream variety, bright and warm, and out on the deck the passengers were taking ad- vantage of it. lllasquerade plans were being discussed from deck chair to deck chair, in the smoking room, sports deck, and . . . er . . . the soft drink fountain. Lounging in a deck chair, attired in an orange plush sweater, purple tam- o'shanter, red and green striped bow tie and plaid kilts, Myron Chalfin de- bated the relative merits of going as a gigolo or as the lllad Hatter. Bob Joughin left a delightful snooze just long enough to state that he would gladly play Dormouse to Myron's Hatter. Eleanor Franz, who had just decided to depict a jewelry counter, was trying to borrow a diamond tiarra and several rings from the Countess Nada Vrbancic von Fruhlingheysen. As Juanita Robinson spent all he1' time perfecting Lady lNIacBeth for her European tour, she was hardly expected to fall out of character for the evening. Those jovial German stewards Ed Kilrain and Bill Dowling, spent most of the afternoon be- tween coffee and dinner in hanging Japanese lanterns and streamers. In fact only three persons on the first deck remained unmoved by the festivities. A. Ebenezer Scrooge Gage, uttered 'CHumbug', into his beard and continued to pursue his study of Marcus Aurelius and the Stoic philosophers. From his perch in the crow's nest, Professor I. Walton Heinbaugh scanned the slightly undulating cerulean savannas for whale, porpoise, narwhal, or the elusive whitfledoofus. The third misanthrope was James Braun, lately turned hermit, who wished to contemplate the theory of personality in inanimate objects fsuch as butter, steel wool, adhesive tape, or bed springs, without interference or interruption. These three were alone absent when the first strains of The Merry Widow were heard in the ballroom. Cyramus and Thisbe were easily recognized as Jack Keener and Lucille Bent. Eugene Friley and his corps of professional escorts decided to capitalize on the situation and appeared to the man in white mess jackets and knee breeches. The organization contained such glamour boys as Harold Pontius, Alva Judkins, and Don Parker. Doris Holp and her partner were Arcadian Shepherd and shepherdess. Zoological costumes were rather popular. Andy Makee, a white rabbit, twinkled his wiggly pink nose over a glass of lemonade. Perehed on a chandalier was that extraordinary taxidermist Lou Crowther, who had done himself up as a stuffed raven. Lucian Silvestro had clipped and glued himself into a presentable French poodle, while Bob Wilson did a Paul ninety-eight Revere on the back of a remarkable horse whose laugh was Bob Law and whose gallop was Alden Fletcher. Evi Chard, psychopathic specialist at Johns Hop- kins, was collecting pennies in a fez. At the other end of Evi's monkey chain, Betty Tucker cranked an organ. Oram Tisdel, who had become bored, was sitting in a corner reading Murder Among the ...4.... . They had draped a streamer robe over her Tarzan costume to thwart pneumonia, for George Hobbs had just blown in garbed as Oh Wild VVest VVind. D'Artagnan, VVillis Ke1'n, and the Student Prince at Heidelbe1'g, Del Wolft', were seated at a nearby table quaffing root beer and listening to the ship's little German band consisting of Felix Elledge, Karl Phillip Emanuel Houghkirk, Claude f Moose j Carroll, and Kenneth Johannesson. Dave VVoodford, the farmer in the dell, who was acting as master of ceremonies for the evening, banged his milk pail on the head of Bill Richardson and called for silence. Ladies and gentlemen, and Captain Branniganf, began Dave, we have upon the stage this evening some distinguished members of the c1'ew who will furnish us with some entertainment? One of Davc's cryptic jokes followed and then the program was allowed to begin. Margaret Johnson, on her way to the Salzburg Music Festival, sang a selection from La Boheme, which was followed by a skit written and acted by Virginia Figler and Patty Elliot. Eileen Lehning contributed an Adagio and Henry Rand, the archaeologist, gave a short talk on the findings of his latest expedition, among which were some rarities of the Hi-Y dynasty. The program concluded with a grand march of all the masqueraders. The judges were Adolph Somppi, Marilyn Flener, America's best-dressed woman, and Ed Kallay, prominent horticulturist and perfector of four varieties of roses, one named for Charles, one for Mike, and two for himself. lVIartin Nel- son as Frankenstein's monster took first honors and Jewel Sennett, who was a colored Mammy from Georgia, was the winner of second place. In the honor- able mention class were Jean Schultz, who was dressed as a Mexican greaser with the sombrerog Bob Fiser as a member of the flying corps, and Marie Tuttle in the garb of the Venerable Bede. It was at this time that Doris Johnston, the demon chaperon, collected her party of young ladies, graduates of the Johnston Finishing school, and left the room. This act was a signal for a general exodus from the floor since it was long since midnight. During the evening, Bette Cinderella Lombardy had lost one of her glass slippers, but rumor has it that it was soon returned. 'ninety-nine ' .ri J .ex , 1 fr, ' -. ,,f A .
