Hawk, Industrial Arts instructor at Harvey High school, because he has made so many paths easier by his cheerful friendliness and his untiring helpfulness, this year's edition of the Anvil is dedicated. lNIr. Hawk has sponsored and entered actively into the pursuit of many fields of useful endeavor, but his favorite sport is that of archery, in which he excels. Believing that archery offers an aesthetic means of physical culture development in the way of pro- viding clean, healthy, out-door exercise combining grace, precision and strength, Mr. Hawk has done much to promote it among young people and adults. His interest in each student and his faithful service to the entire group combine to make him a real pal to all those who have come to call Harvey High school their Alma Mater. ff-H--' ffi .f Q IVAN HAVVK Q THE ARCHER ADMINISTRATICDN I LA KE COUNTY COTTRTHOUSE BOARD OF EDUCATION IB 'F SIl1N'I'llII'071fZOI1,f7 CLYDE C. Baum- gartner, has been chosen from a wide field of college graduates with most of them, however, receiving their education in Ohio colleges and universities. In years of ser- vice Miss Grace VVyman leads the list with a total of 26 at Harvey High and four years in other schools. Mr. Dale Smith with 22 years here, Miss Mildred Cumings with I9 and Mr. Emory B. Whitcomb with 16 years, are also regarded as outstanding veterans. Due to the unfortunate illness of one of the new teachers, Miss Martha Tilock, who teaches biology, it was necessary to engage substitutes to serve in her place during part of the year. The balance of the first semester was taken by Miss Mabel Lewis, a practice teacher from Lake Erie college, and part of the second semester classes were taught by Mrs. E. D. Jayne. EFFIE B. Ruth was chosen from a field of six beautiful nominees in- cluding: hlarjorie Gongwcr, Sally Houghton, Nancy Kimball, Eleanor Pontius and lllary Stephens, who served as her atten- dants. According to a tradition, now in its fifth year, Ruth reigned over the annual Turkey Day football game played be- tween Fairport,s f'Skippers', and Harvey High's 'gRaiders', at Recreation Park field and was enthroned during the Homecom- ing Dance held the following night in the Harvey High gymnas- ium. Escorted by members of the Harvey club, which sponsors the Homecoming celebration, Queen Ruth and her attendants were driven on to the field in two colorfully decorated automo- biles during the half of the football game. After a short talk given by Charles Shepard, president of the club and escort of the queen, Ruth was conducted to her throne in the grandstand where she watched the remainder of the game. At the Homecoming Dance the queen was presented with her crown by Charles Shepard and with a bouquet of flowers, given by the Harvey Club. From her throne in the balcony she and her attendants viewed the dance for awhile before join- ing in with the merrymakers. forty-nine NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Miss Grace VVyIr1an, Sponsor First row: Kenneth Babcock, Jack Pritchard, Ruth O'Brien, Miss Wyman, Sally Houghton, Ray Jylanki, Stanley Remkus. The members of the society are chosen from the upper twenty- five per-cent of the senior class. The faculty selects them primar- ily on the basis of scholarship, but leadership, service and charac- ter are also taken into consideration. The society was formed in February, 1924. The Harvey High school chapter, composed now of a cumulative membership of 260, was organized the same spring, on ltlay 20, 1924. This year 23 students were made members. ty VARSITY H CLUB Mr. A. L. Chester Brewer played the part of Ed, the husband. Lloyd Fisher took the part of Jim Cooper, the old neighbor who kept pushing Ed from behind. The play took first place in the district tournament held at Painesville, March 4, earning the privilege of competing in the state tournament at Columbus, lNIarch 18 and 19. In the semi-finals at Columbus the cast won over seven schools, Ashland, Doylcstown, Greenfield, Dayton, Sardis, Paris Township, and Hambden. This victory qualified them for the finals held the last night of the two days tournament. In this event Painesville won third place in the state, losing to Canton Lehman and Columbus North High Schools. A TALE OF TVVO CITIES Charles Dickens Mrs. Pearl Plumer, Director The well known story A Tale of Two Citiesn was chosen by lNIrs. Plumer for the other one-act for this year. The mob scenes in which all of the speech students took part, were particularly vivid. In connection with the play a lesson in make-up was given to the whole department. The Season 1937 HARVEY 18 VVICKLIFFE 6 Opening the season with practically a green team, Harvey,s Red Raiders completely subdued a far weaker VVickliffe outfit in, an outside league game. Only in the last quarter did Harvey appear to be noticeably weak in any de- partment. At that point the Blue Devils scored on a powerful passing attack, with which the Raiders were unable to cope. HARVEY 20 VVILLOUGHBY 0 In what was the first league encounter for both teams, the Red Raiders rolled over their much heavier opponents from the west end of the county, Wil- loughby. The game was played on a very hot, sultry afternoon with both teams determined to win. However, the boys in red had too much on the ball and unleashed a passing attack which proved very effective. HARVEY 19 HARBOR 6 After trouncing VVilloughby, Harvey was c'up for this one. Using the same combination which clicked against their late opponents, the Raiders swept over a heavier lllariner aggregation with Don Pierce scoring all three touch- downs for Harvey. Incidentally, all four touchdowns of the game were made on long runs since Harbor's only score was realized after an 80-yard jaunt from an off-tackle play. sixty-five RUSSELL RIZZO Quarterback LADDIE ACHESON Left Tackle MARTIN NELSON Fullback if DONALD PIERCE Left Halfback LEE FREDEBAUGH ro-captain Left end FHEODO RE DURCH IK Left tackle DONALD REED Center DONALD CAMPBELL Left guard sixty-sim LUCIAN SILVESTRO Quarterback 1, I ARTHUR KNOX co-mpfrlin Right guard yi Ji - 32,1 Nqr HENRY RAND Right lmlfhuek DELBE1i'1' VVOLFF Left hulfbaek DAVID VVOODFORD Right end I I Y fl ,'i N!! 4 ,, ,, 'M' ii .5 fi f .ft VK I 1 7 ' if 1 fl- 1 ROBER'f WEST' Right tackle GEORG E IIOBBS Center sixty-seven HARVEY 7 ALLIANCE JR. COLLEGE 7 Meeting a large and powerful squad from Alliance, Pa., the Raiders were unable to do much in the first half. In the second, however, they tallied on an end run and Marty Nelson kicked goal to even up the count. The greater part of the battle Was fought in a steady downpour of rain which adversely affected the players of both teams. GENEVA 12 HARVEY 0 The little Eagles from Geneva High proved too much for the Raiders. Amid a dazzling display of end runs and line smashes, Micke-yn Sanzotta, much publicized back, led his team to a Well-earned victory. Harvey's attack was stopped time and again by the fighting Eagles. HARVEY 13 ASHTABULA 6 After somewhat of a let-down caused by the previous game, Harvey came back to down a tough Panther team. Outweighed 18 pounds to the man, the Raiders commenced their drive in the early stages of the struggle. Spinners and reverses, ending in line plays, played a large part in the triumph. HARVEY 6 FAIRPORT 6 The following week, Harvey journeyed to its rivalls stadium with a crip- pled team. Determined to win, the Raiders put up a terrific battle against odds and succeeded in holding a hard-charging Skipper outfit at bay throughout the contest. Fairportls line, however, showed real strength in opening big holes in Harvey's forward wall. The game was played in a drizzle which made ball- handling difficult. CONNEAUT 20 HARVEY '7 With Lee Fredebaugh and Russ Rizzo out of the game, the Raiders met one of their toughest opponents for the last game of the league schedule. Con- neaut was checked for three quarters as Harvey led 7 to 0, but due to careless- ness the Raiders were snowed under in the final period. One of the Trojan scores was the result of an intercepted lateral when Harvey tried unsuccessfully to pull the tonchdown-on-the-kickoff play for the third time. Had the Raid- ers taken this one they would have shared a co-championship with Geneva. FAIRPORT 12 HARVEY 0 A football field covered with several inches of slush was the scene of the Skippers' decisive Win over the Red Raiders in the annual Turkey Day classic played at Recreation Park field. Harvey was without the services of two regu- lar halfbacks, but fought gamely to the end with lNIartin Nelson carrying most of the burden. One of Fairportss touchdowns was the result of a pass, the other, a punt return in the closing seconds of play. The goal posts were up- rooted at the end of the game by a jubilant crowd of Fairporters. sixty-nine -Z- BASKETBALL Starting the season with only two lettermen back, namely Herb lVilcoXon and Clarence Kelsey, Coach Roy George was forced to use a large number of reserves in a desperate attempt to retain the Lake Shore League basketball trophy, attained in 1937-38. Although losing the majority of their contests, the Red Raiders at times showed a powerful and smooth attack, only to sufter a relapse in the next fray. seventy TH EODORE DURCHIK Guard DELBERT VVOLFF Forward HERB VVILCOXON Center KENNETH KLEINSHROT Guard LUCIAN SILVESTRO Guard CLA RNNCE K ICLSRY Forward D A RXVIN GUI! The following game was a headache to Harvey for Ashtabula's Panthers, always strong, rolled over the locals. The same for the Fairport game of the succeeding week, despite Herb lVilcoXon's valiant efforts. However, Harvey came back to sink the Mariners of Harbor in a last-half rally, as Bill Gilpin rang up 17 points to lead the scoring. In the second round of league competition, the Raiders' morale was bolstered when they edged out Geneva by the slim margin of a foul shot contributed by Blartin Nelson, to allow for a previous defeat adminis- tered by the Eagles. Following this victory, Harvey suffered a set- back at the hands of the Mariners but came back to take Conneaut in the next encounter, with Tubby', Kelsey garnering a sizeable score by himself. seventy-two Willougliby, the last place club of the Shore League, blew into town neXt and trimmed the Red Raiders with a vengeance. 'fllloanin' lowc' after this drastic event, Harvey lost its next two games by de- cisive margins and thus closed the season. As the resume indicates, the Painesville basketball season was up hill and down hill all the way, with the Raiders winning one week and losing the next. - RESERVES MUCH BETTER The Reserves fared much better, however, as they won 14 games while losing only two. Coach George used a large number of players on this squad, so in all probability, Harvey's 1938-410 varsity should be one of the strongest in the league. 'Several outstanding members of this contingent were: Earle Robinson, Darwin Doc Gordon, Ken Klein- shrot, Don Soupy Campbell and Bob Courtwright.
