If to hear exactly who we are, I sayg If to know just what we've done is your desireg Then youlll eagerly one hundred pennies pay This our 1915 Red Book to acquire. T Ah! but if you are a sort of human bear, Who for classand college doesn't give a hang, From whom friendship never drove away dull care, And for whom no three long Harvards ever rangg a Even so, one thing herein you'll surely ind That alone is worth a unit of the mint, For, twixt crimson covers that the Red Book bind, You perchance will find,-your own great name in print 7 5 PREFACE With mingled fears and hopes, the Editors present to the class the Red Book of 1915, fears lest the task may have been beyond our ability, yet hopes that this volume may serve in a small measure to be a fitting representative of the Class of 1915, its deeds and its members, and above all, that it may be as much pleasure and proht to its readers as it has been to its authors. I Two years ago, the Class of 1913, with the aid and encourage- ment of the Faculty, published the Hrst Red Book, as an attempt to record its deeds, both for its members and for the outside World. The present' Sophomore Class followed their example with a similar volume. This year We take our places as the perpetuators of the custom. The purpose of the Red Book is to put down in some lasting form a record of the Class of IQI5. Qn the surface, We have pub- lished mere lists of names, mere pictures of men, and mere' records of events, but we hope We have, in reality, done. something more, and have made a memorial of the spirit and the traditions of the class, something which will remain as the summary of our first year at Har- vard, and something Which, in years to come, will recall not only faces and facts, but pleasant memories besides. ' If We have done this, our efforts have been successful. Complete success is, of course, impossible. We have tried, by building upon the successes and avoiding the failures of the previous books, to produce a volume that is better and more Worthy than any that have preceded it. Whether We have succeeded is for our readers to judge. VVe leave it, hoping that it may be the guide for others to come that shall be better and more Worthy. VVith these apologies and forewords, We present the Red Book of the Class of 1915. 8 THE HARVARD FRESHMAN RED BOOK The Editors Wish to thank O. M. Chadwick, IL, R. S. THE HARVARD FRESHMAN RED BOOK 'THE FRESHMAN ELECTIONS The Freshman Elections of this year Were conducted on a plan very different from that used by previous classes. Under the old method, the nominations Were made in open meeting, generally in the Union living-room, and the candidate Whose supporters made the most noise had the best chance of being elected. At a meeting of the class it Was almost unanimously decided to adopt a plan prepared by the Student Council similar to that used by other classes. The Executive Committee of the Student Council' was to make all nominations, further nominations being made by a petition signed by thirty-Hve members of the Class. p , On February twenty-third the elections took place, Which resulted as follows: President, C. E. Brickley, Everett, Mass., Vice-President, D. K. Packard, Roxbury, Mass.g and Secretary-Treasurer, W. H. ClaHin, Jr., Boston, Mass. H. Francke, Cambridge, M. B. Phillips, Milton, and E. WigglesWo1'th, Milton, Were elected to the 'Student Council. 11 OFFICERS AND CLASS COMMITTEES Cole. Baker. Cate. Choate. Merck. Wigglesworth. Withington. Williams. Francke. Hudner. Weatherhead. Og Yale Freshman, O. d2 Total scores: Harvard Freshman, 963 Opponents, O, 80 L 1 THE HARVARD FRESHIMAN RED Manager Captain Cgach REVIEW OF THE SEASON The football team had a very successful season in spite of the fact that Yale Was able to hold the eleven to a no-score game. The pros- pects looked extremely bright from the outset, for aa very large and promising squad of players reported. Under the expert coaching of H. C. Dewey, ably assisted by W. H. Chatfield, the team developed rapidly, and the Hrst game of the season with Groton resulted in an easy victory. The team continued its good Work in the next two games With Andover and the Cornell Freshmen as opponents, Winning both very handily. The first real test of the year came in the Princeton game, which Was Won after a hard struggle by four beautiful field goals. The game Was marred by an unfortunate injury to Frothingham which kept him out of the game for the rest of theiseason. i Worcester Academy put up a good game, but was defeated also by a score of I 2 to o. The team Went into the Yale game with a clear slate. The bitterly contested fight resulted in a o to o game. ' The result was disappointing, but every man Who took part in the game for 81 BOOK THE STADIUM THE HARVARD FRESHMAN RED B'OOK Harvard played his best. Yale had may splendid team and played good football. The team scored a total of 96 points in its six games and was not scored against, surely a very creditable record, i The following is the account of the Yale game as printed 'in The Crimson on November zo: .c The Harvard and Yale Freshmen played a scoreless game on S01- d1er's l-Tield, Saturday afternoonf That the Harvard team, outclassing Yale in nearly every department of the game, failed to score is due largely to the fact that a wet and heavy ball prevented Brickley from making a successful field-goal out of four attempts. The game was CORNELL GAME-Brickley rounding the end for twenty yards hard-fought from start to finish, both teams being evenly matched and very aggressive. There was more actual team-play on the Freshman side, however, than on the Yale team where the individual Work of Castles and Loftus was especially notable. - Harvardls only good chance to score a touchdown came late in the second period after a series of five rushes and a brilliant forward pass from Hardwick to Logan had brought the ball to Yale's 12-yard line. The Yale team stiffened here and held Harvard for two downs, with the result that Brickiey was called upon for a drop-kick. The ball went wide and the score still remained o to o. At the beginning of the game Yale received the kick-off and imme- diately punted to Logan. Cn the next play the ball went to Yale 83 THE HARVARD RRRSHMAN RED Book: through the fumbling of an on-side kick, but a short punt by Castles gave the ball to Harvard on the 50-yard line. From here the Fresh- men rushed to Yale's 25-yard line where Brickley tried his first field- goal. The kick was a fizzle and on the next play Yale punted out of danger. V Early in the second period the Freshmen again came within strik- ing distance of the Yale goal, following a 20-yard run by Bradlee., Again Brickley tried a field-goal, this time from the 30-yard line, and again the ball Went wide. Towards the close of the same period Har- vard had her only chance for a score by touchdown, ending in Brickley's third attempt at a field-goal. 2 CORNELL GAME-A gain through center With five minutes to play the Freshmen brought theball to Yale s I 5'YaFd limi. Hardwick failed to gain on a Wide run around right end, and Bflcklelb fighting desperately, was held for a 2-yard gain through centre, thus forcing him on the 20-yard line to try for a drop-kick. Coolidge, Trumbull and Logan played well for the Freshmen, the last running the team with consistently good judgment. The summary: Coolidge, Wha1'ton, l.e. V r.e. The team, however, did not improve as rapidly as expected, and showed a lack of team-work and efficiency. The season opened with a defeat at the hands of Brookline High, shortly followed by a victory over St. Mark's. Andover was defeated in a poorly played game, and St. George's and Worcester both lost by large scores. The best played game of the season occurred on May 29, when the Freshmen played Exeter to a 2-2, eleven inning tie. On June the first, the team travelled to New Haven and lost the final game of the season to the Yale Freshman, 6-3. A detailed account of the game, taken from the C7'f1'I'LSO'l1, follows: THE YALE GAME The Freshman Baseball Team met the Yale Freshman Team in the last game of the season on Yale Field, New Haven, on June I. The following men were taken on the trip: E. H. Alsop, R. R. Ayres, C. E. Brickley, D. deWiindt, R. B. Frye, R. T. Gannett, H. R. Htardwick, A. D. Macdonald, W. Mason, D. K. Packard, TM. B. Phillips, R. R. West, F. Wharton, I. Winlock, P- Wiinsor. Yale won by the score of 6 to 3 mainly through good battting. The game was an exciting contest and had the usual amount of thrills. Yale scored two runs in the first inning on a pass to Middlebrook, a single by Falsey, and on an error by West. In the fourth, Hardwick and Alsop singled, Frye drew a base on balls, and three runs were netted, due to two errors. Yale again took the lead in the fifth. Middlebrook singled and was brought home by a three-bagger by Falsey. The latter scored on an infield out. In the sixth, Yale again hit well and scored two runs on three hits. For surely everyone Was there. Everyone that counts, that is, everyone with a spark of class feeling. But no! some there may be whom cruel fate detained else- where, and even some in whom the memory of the occasion has been effaced by time as to warrant a short account of our banquet. There is no need to dwell on the list of delicacies prepared for us by our 'able dinner committee. Picture, instead, to yourself every dish that could tempt the palate of a pampered freshman, and you may gain some idea of the plenty under which our tables groaned. l But it was not in the mere physical pleasure of eating that we derived our greatest enjoyment. Three other far more potent sources there were. The inspiring efforts of the Glee Club Quartet, composed of L. L. Shropshire, S. P. Griffitts, L. del. Harvard, and N. L. Tib- bettsg the general spirit of good fellowship which seemed literally to fill the air, and the speeches of the following gentlemen: 140 Qc' n . 1. V4 .,, as 'YWETN C. E. Brickley on The Class. W. An unusually largenumber turned out, and the dining-room, filled With small tables, was packed. Light refreshments Were served, and entertainment Was furnished by Kanrich's Orchestra, the Freshman Musical Clubs, and L. L. Shropshire, Who sang several solos. The smoker Was arranged and conducted by the Entertainment Committee composed of: W. H. Trumbull, Chairman, H. R. Hard- Wick, M. B. Phillips, P. Spang, Jr., F. Wigglesworth, and F. B. Withington.
