CLASS HISTORY-NINETEEN SIX FRESHMAN YEAR HE Class of 1906 has been, almost from the beginning, a class of innovations. Our coming was evidently expected by the University authoritiesg for early in our Freshman year the Office announced that we could get our degrees in three years. It also announced that our mental capabilities seemed to warrant a general stiffening of the hitherto easy courses. life were met at our entrance by another innovation,-the Stillman Infirmary, which was first opened two days before we received our red K' study-cards in Sever II. There were 744 of us at that time: and on September 26, the day after college opened, 144 names were handed in at the Freshman football meeting. Our next official act was on the 29th, when we com- pletely routed the Sophomores in the Bloody Monday U rush. This reception, if unofficial, was triumphant, our formal reception took place in Sanders Theatre a week later, and was more dignified, but less thrill- ing. Dean Shaler presided, and Professor Peabody, Dean Hurlbut,- our first meeting with this celebrated man,-and Roger Ernst '03 were the speakers. 'XV e were next received in detachments by the members of the Freshman beer-night,committee, of which O. G. Frantz was chair- man, at these gatherings we admired the upperclassmen to their hearts' content. Having been suitably welcomed to Harvard, we now turned our at- tention to our class football team, which was having a brilliant career. First we beat Groton 18-5, then we defeated Exeter 11-0. Andover beat us 5--o, this being the only outside game lost by our eleven. After de- feating Wforcester Academy, we ended the season gloriously' by going down to New Haven and scoring 22 points to the Yale Freshmen's IO. The return of our victorious warriors that night was memorable. The team was coached by E. Motley, -I. D. Nichols was captain, -and the following men won their numerals: Montgomery, Bartels, Upton, Carr, Paul, Carrick, 'White, Parkinson, Metcalf, Nichols, Guild, Nesmith, Dignowity, and Hogg. Shortly after our victory over Yale our eleven lost to the eighteen or twenty Sophomores who constituted the 1905 regular team. In spite of their numbers, the Sophomores could score only once. Meanwhile we were distinguishing ourselves in other branches of athletics. In the fall handicap track games Andrews won the 440, Appleton won the, mile, and jordan the broad jump. Henneberry won points in both the 100 and in the pole vault. On the river we sent out six crews, the first and second VVeld eights winning in the fall races. It was in january of our Freshman year that we lirst clearly showed our innovating tendencies. The old system of class elections had proved more or less unsatisfactoryg so, with the assistance of 1903, we adopted an entirely new method of electing class officers, by which the men elected in Freshman year ceased to be the permanent officers of the class. I. M. Montgomery, Ir., who had been taken on the Varsity football squad early in the season, was elected president, R. I. Leonard vice-president, and F. A. Goodhue secretary-treasurer. The class had already begun to distinguish itself in debating, in which it has always been prominent. In December our team defeated the Sophomoresg and on March I3 Shohl, Plaisted, and Hirshberg won for us the class championship by beating the Seniors, Hirshberg winning the Pasteur medal at this debate. The hrst 1906 men to make a college paper were C. Burlingham and C. D. Morgan, who were taken on the C7'f11l50Il at the niidyear elections. Again the University recognized our unusual intellectual powers by establishing, early in 1903, a new set of final honors in literature. By this time most of us had survived our first midyear's examinations, and were cheerfully looking forward to the class dinner. At this great event, held March 27 at the American House, C. P. Green- ough was toastmaster, and the toasts were: 'K The Classf' M. Mont- gomery, Ir.g Athleticsf I. D. Nicholsg The Musical Clubs,', S. Davisg The Press, C. D. Morgan, and Debating, H. A. Hirshberg. Through the winter ,we failed to keep the athletic position won by the football team. The hockey team lost to the Sophomores, and the basket- ball team went down before the Yale Freshmen at New Haven. But in '44 CLASS HISTORY-NINETEEN SIX the spring our class athletics looked up once more. Dives, the first member of the class to win the H,' was third in the 440 in the dual track games at New Haven. Stephenson was playing in right field on the Yarsity nine, and Filley was rowing at six on the Varsity crew. Our class baseball team followed the example of the class eleven, and defeated the Yale Freshmen I7-Q and 12-2. Frantz coached the nine, Leonard was captain, and Quigley, Castle, Taylor, Nichols, Bradbury, Grant, Spencer, Newhall, Greenough, Burns, Garceau, Hellman, Sperry, and Gallagher won their numerals. In the interclass series 1906 beat 1907, but lost to 1903, the Seniors playing 17 men in the final game. Our class crew beat the Wforcester High School eight, but lost by a length and a half to the Yale Freshmen. Pleasanton, Burchard, Guild, Kellogg, White, Switzer, Judd, and Flint made up our eight, Williams being coxswain. Our freshman four, which won from Yale, consisted of Moller, Hollings- worth. Gill, and Shepard. It speaks well for the class spirit that the crew was enabled by a class subscription to go to New London a week earlier than usual. F. C. Taylor won the Francis Fisher ball for the highest bowling average in cricket, and was promptly elected captain of the cricket team for the coming year. O. N. Shepard was on the swimming team which defeated Yale, and won the 220-yard dash in that meet. Dan Newhall won his H in Hockey. Stephenson had the second highest average for the prize bat, and also the second highest fielding average. Thus in our first year we had made an excellent start. The three men who were later to be the Varsity captains from our class had already won the I-I. Wfe had shown unusual ability in debating. Our class football and baseball teams had decisively beaten the Yale Freshmen. And finally, by adopting a radically new system of electing' class officers, we had shown that we were unwilling to be bound by established traditions when those traditions failed to produce the best results. SOPHOMORE YEAR The class numbered 637 when college opened on October 1. We re- turned to Cambridge to find the stadium nearly completed, already it was nearly certain that the Yale game would take place on the new grid- iron. On Bloody Monday we routed the Freshmen so completely that they voted to have the rush entirely done away with, and thus 1906 was the last Sophomore class to take part in the traditional Bloody Monday massacre. The class was well represented on the Varsity football squad, Montgomery, Shurtleff, Bartels, Parkinson, Carrick, Nichols, Leonard, and Nesmith all being candidates .for the first eleven. Meanwhile McBurney was playing on the University golf team, which won the in- tercollegiate championship, and in the fall track games, Perkins, Row- land, Young, and Henneberry won first places, while Shirk, Campbell, Dorman, Roth, and Thayer had seconds or thirds. On the Varsity crew squad were Filley, Burchard, Flint, Judd, Kellogg, Moller, Pleasanton, Shepard, Switzer, and VVhite. In the Yale game Nichols was regular left halfback, and Parkinson regular centre, Montgomery and Squires both played as substitutes. Nichols' playing throughout the season was brilliant, his run of 105 yards through the entire Brown team for a touchdown was the most sensational play of the year. In the interclass football series 1906 beat 1907, but was defeated by 1905. In debating the class was keeping to the standard established in our Freshman year. F. Q. Morton was on the team which debated against Yale on December 4. The class debating team defeated 1907, and later in the year Plaisted, Blackwood, and Kabatchnick won the final debate, Kabatchnick receiving the Pasteur medal. At the award of academic distinctions, deturs were awarded to R. Arnold, H. VV. Fisher, R. F. Foerster, F. Fraser, H. H. Harbour, A. N. Holcombe, A. M. Hurlin, T. F. jones, I. Lebowich, I. Murdoch, D. H. Parker, I. VV. Plaisted, T. M. Simpson, and O. I.'Todd. On the University chess team, which won the intercollegiate championship, were Q. A. Brackett and G. T. McClure. The new system of class elections was given its first trial when the class elected officers for Sophomore year. Montgomery withdrew his name from the list of nominations for president, and Nichols was elected in his place, Leonard and Goodhue were re-elected to their respective offices. Through the winter there was little, except for the inevitable midyears, to be recorded. The class basketball team lost to the Freshmen. Newhall and Wilder made the Varsity hockey team. The class dinner was held CLASS HISTORY NINBTI-EEN SIX 145 at the Somerset on March 23. R. M. Poor was toastmaster, and the speakers were I. D. Nichols, The Class 5 O. D. Filley, Athletics g C. D. Morgan, The Press g and A. E. VVOOCI, Debating In the annual Union elections Montgomery was elected to the House Committee, and Grant and Filley to the Membership Committee. In the spring, with athletics once more active, the class came into prominence again. Un the crew Filley and Flint rowed against Yale in the Varsity eight, and Filley, though a Sophomore, was elected captain of the 1905 crew. Shepard rowed at two on the Varsity four which defeated the Yale four: and I. R. Montgomery was coxswain. Cn the track, Dives was second in the 440 in the dual games with Yale, and Young was second in the high jump. In the intercollegiate games a week later Dives won third place in the 440. In the class track games 1906 failed to make agood showing, and secured only third place. Stephen- son was catcher on the Varsity baseball team, and finished with the second highest batting average. Our greatest athletic triumph, however, was in the summer, when Dives won the 440 in the international games, he and VV. A. Schick '05 being I-Iarvard's two first-place winners against the Englishmen. ' The record of the class for 1903-1904, though in some ways less not- able than that of Freshman year, was for the most part satisfactory. 'W e had furnished all four of the major athletic teams with capable and in some cases brilliant men. VV e had again won the debating championship, and produced one Varsity debater. On the whole, however, the class was less prominent in the college during this year than at any other time in its career. 9 JUNIOR YEAR 9 Throughout the year 1904-1905 the class was constantly in the fore- ground of college activity. Its members were prominent in every branch of athletics, one of the two Varsity debating teams was composed en- tirely of 1906 men. The Union dance given by the members from the junior class was established in this year by 1906. College opened on September 29, when the class numbered 506. At the reception to Fresh- men given by the Phillips Brooks House Association, Nichols was one of the speakers. The first two months of the college year were marked - -- '1 ' by violent political activity, I-Iarvard taking a considerable part in the campaigns for the presidential election. The class seemed thoroughly republican in its tendencies, VVheeler was one of the managers of the famous Republican Parade, and Beach and Vlfood were on the editorial board of the Harvard Republican. The class was not represented on the staff of the Harvard Democrat. In football Montgomery, Squires, Wliite, and Sperry were on the eleven which entered the Yale game, and Parkinson and Nichols went in as substitutes. In the interclass series the 1906 team lost to the Seniors, who won the championship. In the fall track games H. Taylor made a remarkable record, winning two firsts and a third. Except in the sprints, members of the class won points in almost every event. VVhitman played on the University- tennis team. At the award of academic distinctions deturs were awarded to H. P. Arnold, I. DeQ. Briggs, M. C. Gutman, R. L. Hale, H. L. Healy, M. Kabatchnick, R. H. Lord, D. Macomber, A. A. Parker, A. W. Roberts, A. W. Soule, W. W. Thayer, R. I. Underhill, and F. C. VVheeler. The annual Phi Beta Kappa elections were held early in the winter, Foerster, Holcombe, Todd, 'Wheeler, 'I-Iurlin, jones, Murdoch, and Fraser being the IQO6 men taken in. The election of class officers gave rise to a good deal of commotion. Electioneering was rampant, and party spirit ran high. Stephenson was elected president, VVhite vice-president, and Kelley secretary. At the midyear elections of the college papers Bartholomew was elected presi- dent of the Lamjnoon, Beach of the Advocate, Bellows of the M'01'zz'hIy, and Kelley managing editor of the Crimson. The event of the year for 1906 was the junior dance. This was sug- gested in an anonymous communication to the C1'i111is01r, written by a member of the junior class. Although there was considerable opposition, and many felt that such a dance would certainly be an utter failure, the dance committee, of which Grant was chairman, carried the thing through, and the dance was extraordinarily successful. The Union proved to be an admirable place for dancing. The periodical and game rooms and the lobby were divided up into boxes 5 supper was served from the dining- room, and the great living-room made an excellent dancehall. judging from the success of this dance, and of the 1907 Union dance a year 146 CLASS HISTORY-NINETEEN SIX later, the class appears to have founded a permanent and very valuable institution. ln debating the class was more successful than ever. Por the third consecutive time 1906 won the interclass championship, Kabatchnick, Nye, and llolcombe composing the team in the first, and Plaisted, Holcombe, and llarlcy in the final debate. But the best work of the class was in the Yale debate, when the Harvard team - Blagden, Kabatchnick, and Newald - won a decisive victory. .ln hockey Xlfilder, Newhall, and Grant were on the Harvard champion- ship tc:-anig Newhall was elected captain for 1906. Grifnths and Gallagher won the basketball A' Hf' Griffiths being chosen as captain for the coming year. The class dinner was held at the Copley Square Hotel, Morgan was loastmaster, and the speakers were Stephenson, Vtfhite, Pilley, Kelley, and tlrant. The election of Union officers was held on April 6, Stephen- son being' vice-president and Kelley secretary. The work of the IQO6 Union ofhccrs throughout their term of office was unusually successful. ln many ways they did much to increase the popularity and usefulness of the Union, and under their management it became a more essential part of college life than ever before. Spring athletics began with the handicap track games, in which Turner, Soule, blordan, and Henneberry won firsts. 1906 won the class games with 43 points, the Sophomores coming second with 30. In the dual nu-ct with Yale, Dives won the 440, Wfhitman was second in the 880, Turner was third in the mile, Soule was third in the high hurdles, and jordan won the broad jump. Dives was second in the 440 at the inter- collegiate games a week later. In rowing, Pilley, Pleasanton, Flint, and linrcliard were on the eight which rowed against Cornell, and Filley, Ncwhall, Flint, and Burchard rowed on the Varsity eight against Yale. Corlctt and Gill were on the victorious four-oar crew, which was again coxswained by Montgomery. In baseball Stephenson was in his old position as catcher, Bradbury was playing second base, and Spencer and Castle both played in several games. The class tennis championship was won by Smither, who made the University tennis team. Of the prizes awarded in the spring of 1905, P. H. Noyes won a first, and L. Carroll a second Boylston, A. Harley a second Hill, C. T. Ryder thc Lloyd Mcliim Garrison, and H. A. Bellows a second Bowdoin prize. These, with the two Pasteur medals already won by Hirshberg and Kabatchnick, and the Sargent prize won by Ryder in 1904, included nearly every prize open to undergraduates below the Senior class. This completes the record of our junior year, - a record in every way creditable. The class entered upon its last year knowing that it had produced men worthy of prominence in practically every branch of col- lege activity. Tn athletics, in scholarship, in debating, in undergraduate journalism, and above all in the affairs of class and college life, 1906 men had proved their ability g and a large part of the best work of these men was accomplished during the Junior year. SENIGR YEAR College opened on September 28, the class then numbering 308. Many of the men, however, who had previously belonged to it had taken advantage of the three-year degree scheme, and were now enrolled in the Law or Graduate Schools. Wfhen the list of voters for the Senior class elections was made up, over five hundred names were included, two hun- dred more than in the official registration. W7 e returned to find Emerson Hall nearly ready for use, beyond this there were few changes in the appearance of things in and about the college grounds. During the first two months of 1905-1906 football was uppermost in almost every0ne's thoughts. Great things were expected of the eleven, with Reid as coach and Hurley once more captain. Again 1906 was well represented on the team, Kersburg was playing right guard, Squires right tackle, and Carr fullback. Montgomery and Nichols both played in the Yale game as substitutes, Guild won his H at fullback in the Pennsylvania game, and Nesmith, Leonard, Paul, and 'White played in various games. In the interclass series, thanks in great part to the per- sistent energy of Captain Emerson, the class team won the championship, beating the Juniors 5-0 and the Freshmen 6-5. - The Union, under the 1906 officers, continued to be most successful. The officers at length induced the Corporation to allow the dues to be placed on the term-bills, which resulted in a decided increase in the active membership. The most important change in the management of the Union took place just before the spring elections, when the 1906 officers CLASS HISTORY-NINETEEN SIX 147 completely revised the constitution, doing away with the now useless membership committee, and placing the management in the hands of a governing board. The class lost its first interclass debate in'December of this year, being defeated by the juniors. VV. M. Shohl was a member of the team which debated against Princeton. At the award of academic distinctions P. S. Campbell, E. T. Clements, I. R. Nichols, M. Percival, A. C. Sproul, R. E. Tibbetts, and H. E. VVinloclc received deturs. Bartholomew having left college, Farrelly was elected president of- the l,ClIllf700Il,' and at the midyear election Eliot became president of the Crinzsozz. The class day elections were held in December, and went off without a hitch. Qnce more the class showed its unwillingness to abide by use- less traditions by doing away with the old Senior Spread Committee, its work being assumed by the Class Day Committee, which was increased in number from five to seven. As few nominations as possible were made, and but one name was added by petition, which largely accounts for the ease with which the elections were carried out. I In the fall track games Dana won the 880 and Whitman the broad jump. yVhitman and Field were on the Varsity tennis team. A large number of I9o6 men rowed on the Dormitory Crews, instituted this year. The Varsity Hockey team, on which the class was represented by Cap- tain Newhall, again won the intercollegiate championship. The class basketball team defeated the juniors, but lost to 1908 in the final game of the series. - This completes, up to the time of going to press, the history of 1906 as a class. We have one thing to regret, -we were four years at Har- vard without ever having seen a football victory over Yale. Except for this, the career of the class was one of which we may be proud. VVe showed that a class, no matter how large, might still have unity, we showed that we were not afraid either to depart from old traditions or to found new ones. VVe are justihedein feeling that, as a class, we con- tributed our fair share to the life of the college, and that in certain ways we established institutions that will live. ' H, A. BELLOXNS.
