N Thursday, October ISt, 1896, Harvard College opened with the best, if not the largest, Freshman Class that she has ever had. It numbered 416 men in the regular col- lege department, 129 in the Scientific School and a large number oi Specials, who have since attained regular standing in the Class. The Class elections were called for November 17, 1896, and were attended by a large number of men. W. A. M. Burden of Groton School was elected President, S. VV. Lewis of Brookline High School Vice-President, and W. B. Flandrau of Phillips An- dover, Secretary. The Freshman Debating Club was organized on October 14, 1896, with over a hundred members. L. G. O. Smith was made President, J. A. Richards Vice-President, T. H. Whitney Secre- tary, and W. M. Chadbourne Treasurer. The year was a good one for the club, and saw the development of many good debaters. The debate against the sophomore members of the Harvard Union on May 12, 1897, in which the Class was represented by -I. A. Richards, W. P. Eaton and S. B. Southworth, resulted in well- earned laurels for Nineteen Hundred. L The Musical Clubs made a good start and contained much good material. The Freshman Banjo Club, organized in Decem- ber, 1896, elected Caspar M. Brown President and A. G. Mason Secretary and Treasurer, C. M. Brown was made Leader. The officers of the Freshman Mandolin Club were: Presi- dent, G. A. Wilderg Secretary, M. Seasongoodg Leader, G. Manierre. The Freshman Glee Club, organized early in the fall of ,96. elected the following officers on March 31, 1897: President, R. W. Bliss, Vice-President, H. W. Kidderg Secretary, R. B. Bed- ford, Treasurer, -I. B. Hawes, Leader, G. R. Osborne, Accom- panist, L. C. Williams. The musical clubs l1ad a very successful year throughout, and contributed a good sum to the Freshman crew. ' Over a hundred men responded to the call for candidates for the Freshman Foot-ball Team, and Edmund Heard was elected captain. The first game in the championship series, with Ninety- Nine, resulted in a tie, by the score of o to o, neither side being able to score, but in the second game Ninety-Nine won, I2 to o. The Seniors defeated the juniors IO to 0, and then the Sopho- mores IO to 0, and the pennant went to Ni11ety-Seven. Good progress was made by the team, and on November 21, ISQG, the Pennsylvania Freshmen fell on Soldiers Field to the score of 26 to o. The good form of the team was due to the ex- cellent coaching by J. Crane, iQO. and G. Murchie, 395. On November 4, 1896, seventy-two men answered the call for candidates for the Freshman crew. The squads were increased by the foot-ball men, when their season was over, and F. L. Higginson, jr. was elected Captain. R. M. Townsend, '96, did the coaching. The Class races were set for May 6th, 1897, but on account of rough water were rowed the next day, although the conditions were scarcely any better. Ninety-Nine finished first, a length and a half ahead of Ninety-Eight, Nineteen Hundred came in third, a length and a half ahead of, Ninety-Seven. Owing to the wind and rough water, the time was quite slow, IO minutes and 55 seconds. The race with the WVorcester High School crew, over a one and one-half mile course, on May 27, at Worcester, was won by the Freshmen, by half a length. Time, 8 min., 59 secs. On June 23I'Cl the Freshman race with Yale and Cornell was rowed at Poughkeepsie. The race was very close, Harvard finish- ing second, half a length behind Yale. Time, Yale, 9 min. IQ I-2 secs., Harvard, 9 min. 261-2 secs., Cornell, 9 min. 29 1-2 secs. All three boats brotke the record of 9 min. 41 secs., made in 1891. About seventy men came out for the Freshmen Baseball Team. S. W. Lewis was elected Captain, and the coaching was done chiefly by W. L. Carrison, jr.. and J. W. Edmunds, '98. The two games with the Yale Freslnnen resulted in a draw, Har- vard winning the first at New Haven on May 231'Cl, 7 to o. The second game, on Holmes Field. May 31, was won by Yale, 9 to 5. Inthe Class games Ninety-Nine defeated Nineteen Hundred. 8 to 7, in a very close exciting game. The game seemed to be- long to Nineteen Hundred when in the 8th inning the score stood 6 to 2 in favor of the Freshmen. Ninety-Nine made a spurt in the 8th, and tied the score 6 to 6. In the 9th, Ninety-Nine made 2 runs to one by Nineteen Hundred and made the score 8 to 7. In tennis, Holcombe Ward won the championship in singles in the spring tournament, June 2, 1897, defeating Bidwell, '99, 6-3, 6-I, 6-4. On june 19th Ward won the State champion- ship also. , Only a few Nineteen-Hundred men played on 'Varsity teams in the Freshman year. S. W. Lewis, R. Livermore, C. O. Swain and I. H. Lee were with the 'Varsity and second Foot-ball Teams. The Class began to pull together better as the winter went on and developed the steady spirit that was in it, and which has made the class one of the best in College. T The Sophomore year showed a steady progress in every way. As usual, the graduating class left several vacancies to be filled by the lower classes, and Nineteen Hundred stepped to the front with her best material. Burden, Lee, Trainer, Gray, Sawin, Par- ker, Warren, Swain and Boal were taken to the 'Varsity Football Team, and did good work in the game which resulted in a tie, that grand but indecisive struggle between Harvard and Yale. Boal, Parker, Sawin, Swain and Warren represented Nineteen Hundred in the games with Yale and Pennsylvania. The Class Team was defeated by the Freshmen on October 30, 1897, by the score of 36 to o. The absence of our best players, who went to the 'Varsity, contributed in no small degree to the defeat, and the F reshmen had superior coaching throughout the season. F. B. Talbot was captain of the Class Team. So great was the interest in debating, that on November' I, 1897, forty-two men formed a Sophomore Debating Club, with the following officers: President, E. C. Carter, Vice-President, T. H. WVhitneyg Secretary, W. M. Chadbourneg Treasurer, H. S. Bowers. The Nineteen Hundred members of the Union and Fo- rum were honorary members of the club, so that the member- ship was very large. 4 H .. . New HQTEL REILEVUE E aropean Plan. Central Location. Beacon Street, - - BOSTGN HARVEY 81 W0013. Wilber Morse was one of the team that represented Harvard in the debate against Yale on December 3rd, 1897. The officers of the Sophomore Debating Club for the second half-year were: President, T. H. Whitney, Vice-President, A. L. Richards, Secretary, H. J. Davenport, Treasurer, H. A. Wad- leigh. On'April 4th, 1898, the club defeated the Freshmen De- bating Club. W. M. Chadbourne, P. A. Atherton and H. S. Bowers represented the Class. The first annual F reshman-Sophomore Debate took place on May 16th, 1898, and was won by the Sophomores. K. D. Crane, E. E. Sargent and J. A. Richards spoke for Nineteen Hundred. In tennis, Dwight F. Davis won the spring tournament on june 1, 1898, defeating R. A. Bidwell, ,QQ, 6-o, 6--2, 10-8. On January II, 1898, the class voted to have a Sophomore dinner, following the precedent set by Ninety-Nine the year be- fore. A committee of six, composed of the President, W. A. M. Burden, and L. B. Brown, W. B. Cutting, Jr., F. L. Higginson, Jr., W. Phillips and L. G. O. Smith, was appointed to make all arrangements. . The dinner was held at the Hotel Vendome, in Boston, on the night of Tuesday, April 5, 1898, with about 250 present. N. Biddle was toastmaster, and the following toasts were responded to with great enthusiasm: The Class,', W. B. Cutting, Jr., The Crew, F. L. Higginson, Ir., Baseball, S. W. Lewis, The Pressf' L. G. O. Smith 3- The Track Team, A. N. Rice, Toast to the Classf' E. L. Dudley, Poem, R. S. Holland. A number of impromptu speeches were made, and the utmost good fellow- ship prevailed. Songs were sung, and it was not until a late hour that the dinner was over. On january 20, 1898, a Sophomore Ice Hockey Team was formed, of which H. L. Ewer was chosen Captain. In baseball several members of the Class played with the ,Varsity, among them Lewis, Foster, Loughlin and McCornick. The Class Team was called out May 18th, and about twenty men responded. On May 24 the Sophomores defeated the Fresh- men, 9 to 5, but on May 30, '98, were defeated by the juniors, I4 to 7. The score was tied up to the 8th inning, when Ninety-Nine made three runs, making four more in the ninth. N. A. Egbert was Captain of the team. February 14, 1898, fifty-two men came out in answer to a call for Class crew candidates, and F. L. Higginson, jr., was re-elected Captain. When the Class Races were rowed, on April 231'Cl, 1898, the Sophomores finished in splendid form, a length and a half ahead of Ninety-Eight and two lengths ahead of Ninety-Nine. Ninety- Nine had the lead from the Longwood to Harvard Bridge, where Nineteen Hundred spurted ahead and kept the lead, winning the championship. b VVhen the late war with Spain broke out companies were formed in the Gymnasium, and drilled every day. Nineteen Hun- dred formed a company, but its work never got any further than regular drill. However, a number of Nineteenth Hundred men left college to go to the warg among whom were the following: With the Rough Riders were N. B. Adsit, died August I, 1898, of typhoid fever, G. Bowles, C. Hatch, S. McCornick, B. F. Bell, R. N. Burnham and F. M. Newton were in the Naval Reserve. With the Eighth Massachusetts were H. W. Finney, E. A. Young and R. G. Prattg in the First Regiment, Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, were B. Kaufman and G. P. Bowler. Other Nineteen Hundred men in the war were D. Elkins, A. Hasbrouck, S. A. Johnston, R. W. Lahman, died of fever in August, J. D. G. Oglesby, F. Rawle, Jr., F. Simonds and I. G. Webster. own 'vnu ovu WIILRI MII., HW W SXGSKS I I qi . S 1 E A FJ Q.-.-nuluqu V Ll 'NM .E o f' '- ff A . The time was about ripe for a good football season and the men returned to Cambridge anxious to give it all the support they could. The team turned out to be a winner, and everything fell before it. Pennsylvania found her famous guards way back, and then came the notable migration to New Haven in the rain. Burden and Boal guarded the centre, and Warren played behind the line, while the Crimson carried the ball three times over the goal line, and I7 to 0 was the victorious war cry. In the Class Football Series Nineteen Hundred was no more successful than she had been before. She put up a strong game against the Seniors on October 27, 1898, and lost only by the close score of 5 to 0, which was made on a fumble. The Freshmen won from Nineteen Hundred and One by the same score of 5 to o, and then Ninety-Nine won the laurels by defeating the Fresh- men, 6 to o. On the river the Class kept the championship which they had won the previous year. In the spring of '99, however, the Fresh- men were not entered in the race, and so there were only three boats. Nineteen Hundred finished strong, in excellent form in 9 minutes 28 seconds, which was the record for the course, being exactly the time made by the Ninety-Nine Freshmen crew, three years before. The Junior boat finished three quarters of a length ahead of Ninety-Nine. On the diamond, N. A. Egbert was again elected Captain, but Nineteen Hundred could not pull a championship out of it. She was defeated by the Seniors in the first game she played by the score of I3 to 2. Ninety-Nine won the championship. The Class Dinner was not as'largely attended this year as junior dinners usually are, but what was lacking in numbers was made up in spirit. There was singing by the Class members of the Glee Club. F. O. Byrdiacted as toastmaster, and the following men responded to the toasts: The Class, C. O. Swain, Football, W. A. M. Burden, Baseball, S. W. Lewis, The Press, F. E. Bissell, The Track, A. N. Rice, Debating, W. Morse, The Crew, C. L. Harding, E. L. Dud- ley read the Poem. and R. S. Holland, A Toast to the Class.', M. Seasongood made an excellent impromptu speech, and it was a most enthusiastic and wholly successful class reunion. In her Junior year Nineteen Hundred was represented on the 'Varsity Football Team by Burden, Boal, and Warren, on the Baseball Team by Loughlin, and on the 'Varsity Crew, by Tilton, Higginson and Harding. At the end of the respective seasons, W1 A. M. Burden was elected Captain of the Football Team for 1899, and F. L. Higginson, jr. was re-elected Captain of the Crew. W. T. Reid, '01, was elected Captain of the Baseball Team and so Nineteen Hundred had to go without a 'Varsity Captain. The fall .of ,QQ saw the Seniors come back in all their dignity. They deserved largely the credit for the splendid victory over Yale at New London, and their college-mates were not slow in placing Honor where it was due. r The Class Football Series started out with bright prospects for 1900, and on October 30, 1899, they won their game from the juniors, by the score of I5 to 0. On the same day, the Fresh- men defeated the Sophomores, I2 to 5. On November 2d, the final game was played between NineteenfI-Iundred and Nineteen Hundred and Three, resulting in a victory for the Freshmen, by the score of I2 to 5. The game was well played on both sides, and hard-fought all the way through. The election of Class Day Officers resulted in the choice of Secretary, Eliot Spalding, First Marshal, W. A. M. Burden, Second Marshal, F. L. Higginson, Jr., Third Marshal, W. A. Boal, Orator, R. C. Bolling, Poet, W. C. Arensberg, Ivy Ora- tor, Murray Seasongood, Odist, Bartlett Brooks, Chorister, C. O. She now goes out, and leaves her boat, still unbeaten, to crews. who, we hope, will be as worthy of success as Nineteen Hundred was. The Hasty Pudding Play, Wytche Hazelle, was written this year by J. H. Holliday. Some of the Lyrics were written by E. L. Dudley. The Music was composed by H. Tappin, with the able assistance of Mr. C. O. Swain. There were two public per- formances in the Club House, and four in the Park Theatre, Boston. 'On ,Varsity Debates, Nineteen Hundred has furnished E. Mayer, H. A. Yeomans, W. Morse, R. C. Bolling, and also M. Seasongood, as alternate. Nineteen Hundred has shown great enthusiasm and proficiency in debating, and her stimulus will long be felt after she has gone. And now we must leave Nineteen Hundred to those in whose memories she is dear. What she has been worth to us, what she has done for future classes cannot be measured in terms of ath- letic victories or of laurels unsurrendered. Her sons will go forth into the world, carrying with them the impress of their Alma Mater, but an impress stamped with the individuality of that class with which they came to see, and to conquer. That in itself is hard To understand, and yet I fear, poor bard, 'Twere just as well your answers you begin, Since you can't fly now you are really in. The man that precedence most fairly may claim, First in title and stature, in size and in fame, Is so prominent now, 'twere a Burden to tell Any more of a man whom you all know so well, Suffice it to say here he's certain to pass, For in one thing at least he is head of his class. It is high time a word for the oarsmen be said, Although they've left early and hastened to bed, Peter Higginson, everyone knows, thinks a shell Is the only real place where a man ought to dwell, He can tell you the sound of the catch in each throat, And all the time keep both his eyes in the boat. Our crew seems so full of such stars and so bright, The real trouble may be they will row out of sight. We all have listened awe-struck, while prominent men Have told us the use of the bat and the pen, 'We know how Sam Lewis with fathomless grin just smiles at the ball as he gathers it in, But then we're quite sure that first base is a snap And an excellent place for an afternoon nap 3 Graham Smith of the Crimson, a journalist tried, Can write on a subject from every known side, ' He just revels in reeling off news by the ton, And delights in the notice this ought to be done, But heis best on some subject that interests all, Such as what are the glass flowers, or why is Gore Hall? Pat Rice, so he says, knows a couple of things About jumping-can he tell just how many Springs 'Twill take us to win the Mott Haven? But there. VVe value most highly the things that are rare. Debating has uses unlooked for, unguessed : It may cause your goody to giye you a rest, Or induce the head-waiter for supper to run, When you visit the uT0llI'EllI16,, five minutes past one, A power of great uses it is at all times, ' But Bolling on that head has rung all the chimes. Our class in the case of a conflict with Spain With ease could atone for the loss of the Maine We've warriors tried, and if they fought it's clear The Spaniards would straightway turn livid with fear. There's brave Major Swain, He could give them a pain, And when he was through they'd from fighting refrain. Then our other hero, Bertrand F. de Bell, Of the Naval Reserve,-'tis a pity to tell, But th'ey say that the war news has quite turned his head And he keeps his war outfit all packed on his bed. To frighten the foeman Fritz Talbot would singg Doc Egbert could surely hit any old thingg While that steam-engine Boal Would tear out a hole, And Warren go shooting off down to the goal. The most difficult one of the bard's heavy duties Is choosing the first of this class full of beauties, For all are so handsome and all are so fair, Which faces are fairest 'tis hard to declare. Dwight Davis, the tennis Apollo, some think Is most handsome, but there's other ice in this rink g Clive Runnells could hardly be beaten, it's clear, VV e mustn't forget Reggie Bolles too is here, Billy Phillips, whose hand is now open for pelf F For the great college club, and not for himself, Is also deserving a place on the list, And either Fitz Gerald is very much missed. ,l I! p lllllllll. There's also a list of men of fame, Each one well known by deed and name, And each deserving upon his brow, The wreath of glory I place there now. We all have heard that well-known voice That merely asks, but leaves no choice, We all know Eliot Spalding's way, Instead of talk,-it's best to payg But, jests aside, we all know, too, What Eliot did for team and crew, And it's distinctly well worth while, That managers all wear Eliot's smile.
