Their integration on these pages is appropriate only because of the new integration of NROTC affairs into the life of the Harvard Community. The civilian and the military have never mixed comfortably in our democracy. Moreover, this con- fiiCt becomes particularly apparent when ROTC is set into the Ivy League context. Only if one undeIStands this basic conHiCt can one appreciate the transformation which has unfolded. Surely a liberal education is as much the engendering of an attitude as it is the in- Stillation of any specific knowledge. The Class of 1967 has indeed seen the coming of a new attitude on the part of the Harvard NROTC. We have seen the Navy shift its energy away from narrow technical training and join the college in the pursuit of veritas . But as the Navy has gradually learned to associate itself with the Harvard ideal, it has gained new respeCt in the eyes of Harvard undergraduates. With the relax- ation of obligations and requirements, cynicism and resentment have given away to a new buISt of enthusiasm. By objeCtively reevaluating its role within the Harvard Com- munity, the unit has helped us to understand our new roles as naval ofhcers. The Class of 1967 can honesrly say that the lesson has been a good one.
