MONRO CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS 02138 Dean of Student: ROBERT B. WATSON Assistant Dean: May 29 , 1967 ARCHIE c. EPPS, 3D GEORGE w. GOETHALS EUGENE KINASEWICI-I Class of 1967 Harvard NROTC Gentlemen, You leave us to go out into a world deeply troubled by war. By your own decision, and on the strength of four years of careful preparation, you are ready now to take on grave reSponsibilities in the service of our nation. iMost of your major reSponsibilities will be clear enough: they will come to you in the form.of orders,--to Specialist school, to a ship, to a particular division, to this or that battle station. And what you need to know to carry out your reSponsibilities you have already begun to learn here at Harvard; you have already a good ground-work. Much remains to be learned, by hard knocks, but for you it will come fast. iWhat will matter most, as you grow in the service, will be not so lmuch your technical competence. What will matter more is the deve10pment of a personal style,--thoroughness and reliability in doing yourwork, common sense and integrity in dealing with other men, simple courage when things go bad, and good humor, courtesy, and patience for the long days of waiting. For as long as there has been a U.S.A., and indeed for a troubled century and a half before that, Harvard men have gone out to serve their country well at arms, to fight hard and bravely where needed, and to bring their own strange leaven of civilian attitudes and initiatives to the military task. You join an honored and devoted group ofmen, and we wish you God- Speed and a safe return. K-Q. MO Dean of Harvard College .MMAN DIN G OFFICER ' H m i 'xxxx 597 x - . Brady came to the Harvard NROTC Unit in September, 1965, con- tinuing a very divetifled career. He was graduated from the Naval Academy in 1942 and spent the neXt two years aboard destroyers in the Pacific. He was then ordered to flight training and received his wings at the wars end. Captain Brady then spent several years as a fighter piIOt with carrier-based squadrons. His laSt duty was with the Fleet Training Group at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, as Air Officer. Captain Brady has brought to the NROTC at Harvard a spirit that has enhanced the charaCter of the Unit. During his tenure, many new aCtivities such as the Forum, PhOtO, and Sailing Clubs have been started. Captain Brady inspired the remodeling of the Unitis Main Lobby and the addition of the Midshipmen Lounge. His efforts have led to a battalion Strength twice that of his arrival. Since his future is dependent upon the needs of the Navy , Captain Brady will be leavmg Harvard after an0thet year. However, the spirit that he has instilled in the members of the Harvard Unit will remain for many years to come. HARVARD UNIVERSITY NAVAL R. 0. T. C. UNIT 25 FRANCIS AVENUE, CAMBRIDGE, MASS. 02138 June, 1967 TO THE CLASS OF 1967 It is always a pleasure to be involved with the commissioning of officers, but this group holds special meaning for me. For this year's class has left a mark upon the Harvard NROTC out of all prOportion to its size. So much so, in fact, that your commissioning seems almost anti-climactio. Inthe past year, the spirit you have enkindled has so permeated the larger classes you leave behind, that we can look to the future with far greater confidence. It is reassuring to me that this change has oc- curred on this particular campus during this period of profound disa- greement about the basic role of the service in support of national policy. While none of us can be certain how the future will unfold, it is clear that we must commit more than words to support our convictions if we are to become contributing members of the society which sustains us. Inyour case, this commitment has already been amply demonstrated. It is, therefore, most appropriate that you have chosen to dedi- cate this book to Dean John U. Monro. May the standards he has set, bothinthe service and on this campus, become guidelines for all of you. We are losingagreat friend and supporter by still another personal Act of Involvement . We on the staff are privileged to have played a small part in your education and are proud of the mark you have left on the Unit. You take with you our best wishes for continued success in all your endeavors and our confidence that the watch is being passed to capable hands. Good luck and God speed, 232? F. X. BRADY Captain, U. Their integration on these pages is appropriate only because of the new integration of NROTC affairs into the life of the Harvard Community. The civilian and the military have never mixed comfortably in our democracy. Moreover, this con- fiiCt becomes particularly apparent when ROTC is set into the Ivy League context. Only if one undeIStands this basic conHiCt can one appreciate the transformation which has unfolded. Surely a liberal education is as much the engendering of an attitude as it is the in- Stillation of any specific knowledge. The Class of 1967 has indeed seen the coming of a new attitude on the part of the Harvard NROTC. We have seen the Navy shift its energy away from narrow technical training and join the college in the pursuit of veritas . But as the Navy has gradually learned to associate itself with the Harvard ideal, it has gained new respeCt in the eyes of Harvard undergraduates. With the relax- ation of obligations and requirements, cynicism and resentment have given away to a new buISt of enthusiasm. By objeCtively reevaluating its role within the Harvard Com- munity, the unit has helped us to understand our new roles as naval ofhcers. The Class of 1967 can honesrly say that the lesson has been a good one. t! SENIORS COMMISSIONED 1967 9 .s - .- . - . . K .;;:i . .' 3.x: .. s c, . - I I . ' V C l'. . x . 3. . . To coordinate the growing number of clubs and aCtivities within the unit, the Midshipmen ACtivities Council was formed this year. Chaired by Larry Kelly and aided by Dean Bauer, the Coun- cil included heads of the NROTCS clubs, teams, and publications, plus the midshipman athletic di- reCtor, Mike Casey, and class representatives. Working with the Taffrail Club, the MAC ex- traCted midshipman dues and controled funds to be allOtted each midshipman aCtivity. For the firSt time in Harvard NROTC hisrory there were two Deep-Sea Dances, bOth of which were for the first time open to the general public. The success of the dances in turn led to greater midshipman par- ticipation in the club; several freshmen and sopho- mores joined during second semeSter. In addition to this innovation, the club could boaSt a bigger and better year for Other middie social aCtivities. Better beer blasts, even girls at one of the after-drill get- togethers, and a highly successful picnic. On a slightly more elegant level, the Club did a fme job making the Joint Military Ball enjoyable for all who attended. The Taffrailis president, Tony ObSt, also made sure that newer members, freshmen in particular, were given ample opportunity to help in the planning of the units social funcrions. PHOTO CLUB This years Phorography Club could boast bOth the smalleSt and probably the mOSt aCtive membership. Joe Chaisson as President and Ernie Carman as the rest of the Club fixed up the dark room and then Clicked away at just about everything of intereSt. Then the aCtion commenced. Joe instruCted interesred mid- shipmen in the fine art of phorography. Soon the darkroom was full of bodies, the Loudrpeaker and display areas were full of phoros and the tho Club was a going organization. Mark Statuto now . . is a pro. He owns a Nikon F . v v I. Relying on the talents of the tho Club and the in- defatigable capabilities of the Advertising Manager, John Miller, Editor Bernie Bradstreet is responsible for this years edition. Business Manager, Bob Flanagan, and Bernie will continue working after mOSt of the Other midshipmen ac- tivities Stop for the summer. Dan Sheehan, EdItOI for the hISt half year before becoming Battalion Commander, succeeded in building up a momentum which made Hugh Flicksi takeover much easier. The newspapetis relatively new format was further enlivened with more photographs by the tho Club and drawings by artiStic members of the Loudspeaker staff. With the help of assistant editor Jim McGrath, Hugh put together issues up to ten pages long and the paper was met with increasmgly enthu51ast1c re- sponses from bOth the midshipmen and their parents, who received copies of each issue. 25 ...mxuxxxNN .X . .. .xkkaxh . . . . . Professor Ed- win Reischauer was there. Added to this were the usual but always enter- taining sea stories. It was the annual Navy Day Dining-In held at Shannon Hall on Thursday, 27 October. Pro- fessor Reischauer, gueSt speaker, talked about his experiences as the Ambassa- dor to. Japan. Judging from the per- centage of midshipmen in attendance, it was apparent that the Midshipmen ACtivities Councils plan of you might as well go since yo.u,re paying for it anyway was very successful. MILITARY BALL The Leverett House Dining Hall provided an elegant setting and the Eighteenth Army Band provided the dance music for the annual Joint Military Ball held on Friday, 3 March. During the intermission the TUPELOES , Wellesleys Own sprites of mirth and musical gaiety per- formed a repertoire of favorite college songs that succeeded in lambaSting, much to our approval, all the men of the Ivy League. The colorful evening was enjoyed by all, and its success was a tribute to the hard work of those cadets and midshipmen who handled all of the arrangements. a IX A. 'VIY;I'I.'.
