I - i i Headmaster ' s Address As the old poem counsels, Let us then be up and doing, with a heart for any fate ... A good thought for the Class of ' 89! You have always been up and doing — an active, enthusiastic bunch — and you ' ve been willing to show heart, to try, and to hang in there. You ' ve displayed a number of traits that I hope you ' ll never lose, either as individuals or as a class: energy, adventuresomeness, courage, hard work, dedication, affection, and togetherness. From many identities you have forged one, and the Class of ' 89 will be re- membered with pride and fondness. And you, its members, remember Harvard School as you walk down the corridor of time: for this place has been home to you, and home it will remain, the place where you ' re always welcome. — Thomas C. Holmes on Archer: His keen mind, generous spirit and true heart have been constant in him as in no other man I have known, and I ' ve known him well for over thirty-five years. He has benefitted so many colleagues — in all depart- ments, and, of course, numerous students. Much of what is good about Harvard School today is owing to the work he has done here these past twenty years. The Yearbook could not be dedicated to a more de- serving person. Archer on Holmes: Like the great fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, Mr. Holmes is a man of great personal force. He teaches with such conviction that he can make the most pedantic point of literary interpretation or Eng- lish grammar seem to his students, not just interesting, but a matter of infinite significance. He is like Sherlock Holmes in another respect: He brings order out of disorder. Mr. Holmes specializes in turning cluttered minds into orderly thinkers. When I inquire about the secret of his success, he simply looks up from his well- thumbed textbook, blinks his eyes quizzically, and says, Elementary, Dr. Archer, elementary. ' ' Deification 21
