MATERNAL AND CHILD HEALTH WILLIAM SCHMIDT (Chairman) ISABELLE VALADIAN For Hippocrates, constitution was clearly the most important factor in the occurrence of diseases with epidemic factors secondary. In this century, following the Pasteurian revo¬ lution and the discovery of the vitamins and other essential nutrients, external factors have dominated our thinking on infectious and non- infectious diseases. I believe that we are entering a phase of Public Health when more than lip service will be paid to the inter¬ action of constitutional and environmental factors. A deeper understanding of pathogen¬ esis is vital to prevention. Jean Mayer NUTRITION FREDRICK STARE (Chairman) JEAN MAYER POPULATION SCIENCES ROGER REVELLE HENRY VAILLANT

The Faculty of the School of Public Health has a multiplicity of goals which are related in varying de- ;rees to the universe of unsolved problems that affect the health of people. Over the years the areas of concern »f the Faculty have changed and expanded as public health has evolved from a limited public effort directed oward sanitary reform, the control of communicable disease, and the care of mothers and young children. The promotion of the health of people should reflect but not be limited by the health role assumed by he government. The past decade has witnessed a rapid forward movement of our national government in the upport of the health sector, particularly in respect to the financing of personal health services. Other changes n our health-related priorities have been the recognition of the inherent dangers in unrestricted population ;rowth and in the continuing degradation of our environment. These three elements have greatly affected the ield of public health. When taken together with the continuing burden of infectious disease, the mission of schools of public lealth in preparing people to provide service, to teach, and to conduct research in these broad areas becomes in educational, if not a societal, imperative. - Alonzo Yerby 27
