Erwin Nathaniel Griswold Dean and Langde!! Professor of Law President of the Harvard Law Review in 1928 and recipient of an S.J.D. in1929,Dean Griswold returned to his native Cleveland, Ohio for private practice. He was soon in Washington, D.C., as Special Assistant to the Attorney General, handling many cases be- fore the U. S. Supreme Court. Leaving Wash- ington in 1934, he was appointed to the Law School faculty. He became a full professor a year later and Dean and Charles Stebbins Fairchild Professor of Law in 1946. I V -Wi E S The Dean's leadership has resulted in re- markable changes and progress in the Law School since 1946. Because of his singular devotion to the welfare of this school, he normally engages in an eighty-hour work week. Aside from his administrative duties, the Dean teaches a course in Taxation, does extensive writing and editing and serves on many legal committees. His published books include Spendthrw Trusts The Fwh Amend- mem' Today, and casebooks on Federal Taxa- tion and Conflict of Laws. He is also a con- tributor to legal periodicals and is general editor of the American Casebook Series. A member of the Massachusetts and Ameri- can Bar Associations, Dean Griswold is also active in the American Law Institute, is chair- man of the American Bar Association's Spe- cial Committee on Professional Relations, is a member of the U. S. Civil Rights Commis- sion and of the ABA,s Special Committee on World Peace Through Law. Among his hon- ors have been numerous honorary degrees, a directorship of the American Judicature Society and president of the Association of American Law Schools. 19

HAROLD JOSEPH BERMAN Projkssor of Law Professor Berman returned to Harvard Law School after a year's leave of absence, in which he taught American Law at Moscow Uni- versity and studied Soviet Law at the Institute of State and the Acad- emy of Sciences. He teaches a course in Comparison of Soviet and American Law and many of his publications deal with this subject. Graduating from Yale Law School in 1947, he began teaching here in 1948 as a visiting professor. Active in promoting the teach- ing of law in the liberal arts curriculum, he has served as chairman of the Association of American Law Schools committee on this proj- ect. His text, The Nature and Function of Law, is used as a text in many colleges. Born: 1918, Hartford, Connecticut. A.B., 1938, Dartmouthg M.A., 1942, Yaleg LL.B., 1947, Yalc. DEREK CURTIS BOK Prokssor of Law Professor Bok entered the Law School in 1951, after graduating fl'0m Stanford University. He served on the Board of Editors of the Law Review and received his LL.B. in 1954. After graduation, he spent one year in Paris as a Fullbright Scholar. While in Europe, he wrote a monograph, The Hrs! Three Years ofthe Schuman Plan, which was published as one of Princeton Uni- versity's Studies in International Finance. Following his year abroad, he entered military service, serving as an Assistant to the General Counsel in the Office of the Secretary of the Army. Since joining the faculty, Professor Bok has been teaching Labor L3-W, Antitrust Law, and a seminar in Labor Law. Born: 1930, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A.B., 1951, Stanfordg LL.B., 1954, Harvard, M.A., 1958, George Washington University. ROBERT BRAUCHER Prokssor of Law Aside from 15 years of teaching at the Law School, where he was Editor of the Law Review as a student, Professor Braucher has taught at the Harvard School of Business Administration for several years, and as a Fulbright Lecturer in japan in 1959. He is currently the Reporter for the Restatement of Contracts Sec- ond, the Coordinator for the revision of the Uniform Commercial Code, and has served on the Massachusetts Commission on Uni- form State Law since 1954. Professor Braucher has written Cases on Commercial Law, and has co-authored Introduction lo Commercial Law, and Commercial T ransaclions, a course he teaches in addition to Agency, the Icgal Profession, and a seminar in Commercial Law.
