FRANK ERNEST ARNOLD SANDER Assistant Professor of Law Professor Sander began his legal career as a clerk, first for Chief judge Magruder, Court of Appeals, First Circuit, and then for Mr. justice Frankfurter, U. S. Supreme Court. His next fifteen months were spent with the Tax Division of the De artment of justice. The Professor also practiced with a Boston firm for three years before joining the Law School faculty in 1959. Currently, Mr. Sander is Consultant to the Massachusetts Bar Committee on the Judiciary, and a member of the Advisory Com- mittee to the Massachusetts Inheritance Tax Bureau. SOHN Bemir Professor of International Law and john Harvey Gregory Lecturer on World Organization Professor Sohn is presently on a one year leave of absence, while serving as a consultant to the State Department on matters of dis- armament, and the establishment of the new Disarmament Agency. The Professor joined the faculty in 1946, after six years as Research Associate to judge Hudson of the Permanent Court of International justice. He participated in the San Francisco Con- ference which drafted the United Nations Charter, and served as a legal officer in the U.N. Secretariat in 1950 and 1951. SUTHERLAND Buney Proferror of Law Aside from 1927-28, when he was legal secretary to Mr. justice Holmes, Professor Sutherland practiced law in Rochester, New York, from 1926 until 1941. He served in the U. S. Army from the latter year until 1945, receiving the Bronze Star and numerous citations. Before becoming Professor of Law at Harvard in 1950, he taught at Cornell. In 1956, Professor Sutherland held a Ful- bright lectureship at Oxford, He edited Government Under Law, the published proceedings of the john Marshall Bicentennial at Harvard, of which he was chairman, and his Rundell Lectures at Wisconsin in 1955 were published as The Law and One Man Among Many. OLIVER SANFORD OLDMAN Proferror of Law and Direrfor of Training of the Izzlemational Program in Taxation Following his graduation from the Law School, Professor Old- man practiced in Buffalo and taught at the University of Buffalo Law School. Since 1955, when he returned to the Law School, he has been in charge of the training activities of the International Program in Taxation, and was recently appointed Director of the Program. In 1958, he was a member of the Commission to Study the Fiscal System of Venezuela, and in 1960, he and Professor Surrey con- ducted a Preliminary Survey of the Tax System of Argentina. Currently, Professor Oldman is teaching State and Local Taxa- tion, and a seminar in International Tax Research. Born: 1920, New York, New York. S.B., 1942, LL.B., 1953, Harvard. RICHARD R. POWELL Viritizzg Proferror of Law Professor Powell is the Emeritus Dwight Professor of Law at Columbia University, and is currently teaching both at Harvard and Boston College. After receiving his LLB. from Columbia in 1914, he entered private practice in Rochester, New York, for seven years, and joined the Columbia faculty in 1921, where he remained for forty years. The Professor has written a casebook on the law of Trusts, the course which he is conducting at the Law School, He has also authored the six volume set of Powell on Real Property, and many other books and articles. A.B. 1911, University of Rochester, A.M., 19125 LL.B., 1914, Columbia, ALBERT MARTIN SACKS Proferror of Law President of the Harvard Law Review and recipient of his I.L.B. magna cum laude, Professor Sacks was employed by Cravath, Swaine 84 Moore before clerking for the late Second Circuit Court of Appeals judge Augustus N. Hand in 1948-49. In the following year, Mr. Sacks clerked for Mr. Justice Frankfurter, joining the Washington, D. C. firm of Covington and Burling from 1950 to 1952, before returning to Harvard. The Professor was the Director of the Massachusetts Adminis- trative Pr0CCdL1r6 Study in 1953-54, and is currently the Associate Reporter to the Advisory Committee for Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. SAMUEL E. TI-IORNE Professor of Legal History Professor Thorne came to Harvard from the Yale Law School where he was Simeon E, Baldwin Professor of Legal History and Librarian. Prior to Yale, Mr. Thorne served as an Associate Professor of Law and Librarian at Northwestern University. Dur- ing World War II, he was a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy. An authority on the law of medieval and Elizabethan England, Professor Thorne has written several papers on legal-historical subjects and has edited, among other works, A Discourse Upon the Exposition and U nderstfwdin gs of Statutes. Presently, the Professor is teaching English Legal History and a seminar on the same subject. Born: 19075 New York, New York. DONALD THEODORE TRAUTMAN Professor of Law After interrupting his college education in 1943 to serve in the Infantry and in Military Intelligence, Professor Trautman re- turned to Harvard in 1946 and enrolled in the seven year College- Law Program. He received his A.B. summa cum laude, his LL.B. magna cum laude, and was Editor of the Law Review. Following his graduation, Professor Trautman held a Sheldon Travelling Fellowship under which he studied in Europe. During the 1952 Supreme Court Term, he served as law clerk to Mr. justice Frankfurter. Professor Trautman has co-authored a casebook on Accounting with Professor Herwitz, and is currently Adviser to the Reporter of Restatement Second, Conflict of Laws. Born: 19243 Cleveland, Ohio. TURNER Professor of Law Professor Turner served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946, and then entered Yale Law School, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Yale Law journal and received the Peres Prize for outstanding student contributions to Volumes 58 and 59. Upon graduation, he clerked for Mr. justice Tom C. Clark of the Supreme Court, and was employed for three years with Cox, Langford, Stoddard and Cutler in Washington, D. C. The Professor is presently a Conferee, Attorney General's Com- mittee to Study the Antitrust Laws, and has co-authored Antitrust Policy.
