DAVID FARQUHAR CAVERS Fessenderz Professor of Low Following graduation from the Law School, where he was Presi- dent of the Law Review, Professor Cavers was associated with a New York firm for three years. After one year as an instructor here, he taught at the law schools of West Virginia and Duke with appointments as Visiting Professor at Yale and Chicago. After service as Assistant General Counsel for Price in the O.P.A., Professor Cavers rejoined the faculty, serving as Associate Dean from 1951 to 1959, and receiving the Fessenden chair in 1952. Last year, the Professor was a Consultant to the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy. His publications include co-authorship of Eler- tric Power Regulation in Latin America, and the editing of the volume set of Law and Contemporary Problems. Born: 1902g Buffalo, New York. JAMES HARMON CHADBOURN Visiting Professor of Low Presently a Professor of Law at U.C.L.A., Mr. Chadbourn is teaching Civil Procedure and Evidence at Harvard this year as Visiting Professor. He has previously instructed at the University of North Carolina, Duke, and Pennsylvania. Professor Chadbourn is Research Consultant for the California Law Review Commission, and Vice-Chairman of the American Bar Association Committee on Uniform Rules of Evidence. Aside from penning various articles in legal periodicals, the Professor has authored Lyncbifzg and tbe Law and co-authored California Pleading, Federal Courts, and three casebooks on Civil Procedure, each one in collaboration with a different professor. DAWSON Charles Stebbins Fairchild Professor of Law Professor Dawson was on the faculty of the University of Michi- gan for 50 years before he joined the Harvard staff in 1956. On leave from Michigan from 1942 to 1945, he served as Chief Counsel in the Rent Section, Ofiice of Price Administration, Chief, Middle East Division, Foreign Economic Administration, and Acting Regional Economic Counsellor for the Middle East, State Department, In 1947-48, he assumed the Directorship of the Foreign Trade Administration for the Greek government. Professor Dawson is the author of Uszjust Enrirbment, a Com- paratire Analysis, A History of Lay judges, and is co-author of a Casebook on C ontrorfs and C0l1l1'z1ff Remedies. ERNEST JOSEPH BROWN Proferror of Law Having practiced law for several years in Buffalo, Professor Brown turned to the academic world in 1937 by joining the faculty of the University of Buffalo Law School, where he ultimately became Assistant Dean. After serving in the Army during World War II, he came to the Law School as a Visiting Professor in 1946, and was appointed Professor on the staff the following year. With Professors Freund, Sutherland, and Howe, he is editor of a casebook on Constitutional Law, a course he teaches at the Law School along with Taxation, and a seminar in Taxation: Corporate Reorganizations and Distributions. Born: 19065 Lake Providence, Louisiana. A.B., 1927, Princetong LL.B., 1951, Harvard. CLARK BYSE Proferror of Law Following his graduation from Wisconsin in 1938, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review, Professor Byse became Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Iowa. In 1940, he began a five year period of government and war service. Mr. Byse was named Assistant Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania in 1946, and Professor of Law two years later. He came to Harvard in 1957. Presently, he is a member of the Administrative Conference of the United States, and Counsel to the American Association of University Professors. He is co-author of Admifziszmfiife Law Carer and Comment: and Tenure in Ameri- can Higher Edlzmlionf Planr, Pmrlicer, rind the Law. Born: 19125 Oshkosh, Wisconsin. B.E., 1935, State Teachers College, Oshkosh: LLB.. 1938. Wisconsin: LLM., 1939: S.J.D., 1952, Columbia. ANDREW JAMES CASNER Associate Dean and Weld Professor of Law Professor Casner is one of the nation's foremost authorities on Property Law. He has been Reporter and Adviser to the Restate- ment of Property, Reporter for the current American Law Institute project to draft a mo el estate and gift tax statute, Reporter for the Uniform Property Act, and Editor-in-Chief of the eight volume set of the Amerirmz Law of Properly. He is also a member of the A.B.A. Committee on Professional Ethics, Director of the Harvard Law School Program of Instruction for Lawyers, Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Law Depart- ment of Little, Brown 8a Company, editor of a casebook in Estate Planning, and co-author of a Property casebook, which will be long-remembered by most Harvard Law school students. CHARLES FAIRMAN Proferror of Law Professor Fairman has taught courses in law, government and political science at Pomona College, Wfilliams College, Stanford University, Washington University fat St. Louisj and Harvard. A participant in both World Wars, he served as a Colonel in the judge Advocate General's Ofhce from 1942 through 1946. Professor Fairman's published works include The Law of Martial Rifle, Mr. fffrlire Miller and fbe Supreme Court, 1862-1890, and Amerimlz COIZJ'f.iflllf0IZdl Decisions. The Professor is on' leave of absence while working on a history of the Supreme Court from 1864-1888, under the Permanent Committee for the Oliver Wendell Holmes Devise. Born: 18973 Alton, Illinois. A.B., 1918, University of Illinoisg Ph.D., 1926, Harvardg LL.B., 1954, University of Londong S.J.D., 1938, Harvard. RICHARD HINCKLEY FIELD Proferror of Law After graduating magna cum laude from the Law School in 1929, Professor Field engaged in private practice in Boston until World War Il, when he became General Counsel for the Olice of Price Administration. He returned to the Law School in 1946 as a member of the faculty. From 1957 until 1959, he served as Reporter for the Rules Advisory Committee in Maine. Together with Professor Kaplan, he has edited a casebook on Civil Procedure, and has also been the co-author of Maine Civil Practice. Mr. Field is on leave for the first semester, 1961-62, but will conduct a course in Trial Practice during the second semester, The Professor also teaches Civil Procedure and Evidence. Born: 19033 Phillips, Maine. A.B., 19263 LL.B., 1929, Harvard. ROGER FISHER Profesror of Law Professor Fisher spent two years in Paris as an Assistant to the General Counsel of the European headquarters of the Economic Cooperative Administration after receiving his LL.B. in 1948. From 1950 through 1956, he practiced with Covington 8: Burling in Washington, D. C., working largely in the international field. Professor Fisher then joined the Department of Justice as an Assistant to the Solicitor General before coming to the Law School staff in 1958, Mr. Fisher is currently a member of the Executive Committee, American Society of International Law, and the Commission to Study the Organization of Peace.
