Professor Westliiill was connected with the Chicago Firm of Bell, Boyd, Marshall and Lloyd after graduation. This associa- tion was interrupted from 1951 to 1953 when he served with the Army in the Ofhce of the Judge Advocate General. Professor Wfesttall is co-author, with Profe:sor Casner, of Part 21, Construction Problems of A111ei'ic:111 Law of Property. I'le teaches Corporations I, Property II, and Real Estate Plan- ning. TOEPFER Vice Dean 111111 Direrlor of A1!111i,rri011.r Mr. Toepfer graduated from the Law School in 1947, after having had his course interrupted by four years of service with the Navy. Upon receiving his degree, he was appointed Secre- tary of the Placement Office, and a year later he was designated Assistant Dean and Director of Admissions. In 1952 he tool: charge of the School's Financial Aids program, combining this with his placement and admissions responsibilties, From 1956 to 1959 he served as Chairman of the Policy Committee of the Law School Admission Test. On january 1, 1956, Mr. Toepfer was appointed Secretary of the Law School. I-le served in that capacity and as Director of Admissions and Financial Aids until january, 1959, when he was named Vice Dean of the Law School and a member of the Faculty of Law. Harvard, RUSSELL HASTINGS PECK S'eci'el1u'y of line Law School Mr. Peck entered the Law School in 1947, after completing undergraduate work at Harvard which had been interrupted during the war by service in the United States Army. Upon graduation, he was appointed Assistant Dean, taking on, among other duties, publication of the L11111 Srbnol CdflI10gIl6 and Hnmlborzle for Ezlleriifg Sllllflfllff. For several years he was in charge of the Placement OHice. He became editor ot the I'Izll'1'tIl'df Law School Bulletin in 1956, and was appointed Secretary of the Law School in 1959. DONALD F. TURNER Proferror of Law Professor Turner holds an A.B. from Northwestern Univer- sity, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from Harvard. After serving in the Navy during World War II, he took his LL.B. at Yale, where he was Editor-in-chief of the Yale Law fflllfllrll and received the Peres Prize for outstanding student con- tributions to Volumes 58 and 59. He graduated Clllll laude in 1950. Following a clerkship with Mr. Justice jackson, he was associated with a Waslliiugtoiu, D. C., law firm. Professor Turner teaches Government Regulation of Business and the Antitrust Seminar 1950, Yale. DETLEV F. VAGTS Arrirlfzfzl Proferror of Law Professor Vagts graduated from the Law School in 1951. 1-Ie practiced with the New York law firm of Cahill, Gordon, Rein- del and Ohl for several years, specializing in corporate and antitrust matters. He also spent three years in the Air Force, serving as a supply and intelligence oHicer and as StaH judge Advocate for a fighter group. From 1946 to 1949 he studied the continental systems of law at the University of Zurich and at the University of Paris. I-Ie was on leave of absence in 1947-19118 to serve with the legal division of the United States Military Occupation Government in Germany, During 1956-57, Professon von Mehren was a Ful- bright Research Professor at the University of Tokyo, Professor von Mehren is on the Board of Editors of the flmer- ifllll jolrrmll of Colflpfzmliife Lum and is the author of The Civil Law SyJ'le111.r.' WILLIAM SPRAGUE BARNES Arrirlalzl Dean After graduating from Yale in 1940, Mr. Barnes entered the Law School, but left shortly thereafter to join the service in 1941. A fighter pilot in Egypt and Libya in 1945, he completed his first year law work while a prisoner of war and graduated from the Law School in 1947. He received the degree of doclenr en draft from the University of Geneva, Switzerland in 1957. Between 1948 and 1950 he was Research Associate in Com- parative Law at Michigan Law School. From 1950 to 1954 he served the Law School as Secretary of International Legal Studies. He is director of the World Tax Series. In 1955 he was appointed Assistant Dean and in 1958 was elected to the Cam- bridge School Committee. Born: 1919, New York, New York. A.B., 1940, Yale, LLB., 1947, Harvard. WESLEY E. BEVINS, JR. Amiylzllll Deniz Mr. Bevins entered the Law School in 1946 after service with anti-aircraft artillery of the Third Army in Europe. After gradu- ation in 1948 he was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar, and that same year became Executive Director of the I-larvard Law School Fund for the Massachusetts area. In january of 1950, Mr. Bevins joined the Administration Staff as Assistant Dean. He directs the operation of the Dormi- tory Ofnce and is also Director of the Harvard Law School Fund and the Alumni Omce. Mr. Bevins holds the rank of Lt. Colonel in the Army Reserve and acts as adviser to students with respect to their military concerns. Born: 1918, Peabody, Massachusetts. B.S., 1941, Bowdoin Collegeg LLB., 1948, l-larvard. WILLIAM LANE BRUCE 33 A.r.ri1'ln1zl Demi - Mr. Bruce graduated from the Law School in 1951. l-le prac- ticed law in Providence, Rhode Island, with the law firm of Edwards and Angell from 1,951 until January, 1956. At that time he returned to the Law School to take up his present duties. He is a member of the Rhode Island and Massachusetts Bars. Mr. Bruce is a native of Maine. During World War II he served with the Amphibious Forces of the Navy. Mr. Bruce is Assistant Secretary and Assistant Treasurer of the Harvard Law School Association, Associate Director of the Program of Instruction for Lawyers, and is in general charge of the Placement Office.
